A short interview excerpt in which host Ndubuisi 'Andy' Egwim introduces Dr. Ruth Machin, a former NHS radiologist who had to stop practicing due to ill health. The conversation focuses on the personal and financial impact of being unable to work, the emotional loss (identity, purpose, earning potential), and the value of having income protection insurance which prevented financial disaster. The piece frames her experience as turning a crisis into a positive new chapter.
When you had this injury, even not being an ophthalmologist myself, but it's obvious that at that point your career is in jeopardy as a radiologist.
I always wanted to get back to work, but I was starting to have that little bit of my brain saying, right, you just need to have not being able to go back as your plan C and start thinking about what happens if you can't.
What would have been the implication if you didn't have this income protection?
It's not just a case of losing your income and your career. You've lost your earning potential, you've lost your purpose, you've lost part of your identity.
Just taking that single financial decision was worth several hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Have you ever considered what you might do as a doctor if you are suddenly unable to practice medicine due to ill health, or if for any reason you just were unable to practice medicine? Well, in real life? This happened to my guest today, but it's like life gave her lemons, she turned into lemonade. No, no, no, no. She didn't just turn it to lemonade. She turned back to life and shouted, I want my orange juice. That's what I ordered. And it seems like she's getting it. So I've got today Dr. Ruth Machin, who was a radiologist, very highly specialized NHS radiologist consultant, who unfortunately, at some point had to stop her work because of ill health, but somehow she turned that into something positive. And today she's here to share her story and how she didn't. How she avoided financial disaster when this happened. So, welcome, Dr. Rude, thank you for joining me.
