Pensions vs. Investment Pots_ Who Retires Richer

In this video, Ndubuisi 'Andy' Egwim compares the retirement outcomes of two hypothetical individuals, Bayo and Gloria, based on the size and composition of their investment pots (ISA, property, and stocks & shares ISA). Bayo’s pot of £315,000, when drawn down at a modest standard of 31.7% per year, lasts just under ten years, depleting around age 75 if he retires at 65. Gloria’s larger pot of £640,000 under the same standard extends beyond twenty years, lasting until about age 85, providing roughly a decade more financial security. Under a comfortable spending standard (approximately £40k per year), Bayo’s pot runs out at age 73, while Gloria’s lasts until age 81, adding eight extra years. Using the sustainable 4% rule, Gloria can draw £2,132 per month versus Bayo’s £1,050, giving her over £1,000 more each month for the remainder of her life. The analysis highlights the impact of pot size, withdrawal rates, and flexibility, suggesting that Gloria could potentially retire earlier and enjoy greater financial freedom.
