The Biggest Investing Mistake Doctors Make

In this YouTube video, Dr. Andre Grim and Dr. Ndubuisi “Andy” Egwim explain that the greatest risk doctors face when investing is not market volatility but being forced to sell assets at the worst possible time because their financial foundations are weak. They introduce the SCRUBS framework – Safety net, Clarity/Continuous education, Remove high‑interest debt, Underwrite risk, Build your blueprint, Shield from taxes – as a step‑by‑step checklist that medics should complete before committing money to investments. The presenters illustrate each element with practical advice (e.g., keep 3‑6 months of essential expenses in a liquid ISA, pay off 20‑30% credit‑card debt, secure income‑protection insurance, define purpose and time‑horizon, and use tax‑efficient wrappers such as Stocks & Shares ISAs, SIPPs, LISA, or EIS). A real‑world locum GP story shows how lack of an emergency fund led to panic selling during a market dip. The video also promotes the Money Wise Doctor book, a free Investing Readiness scorecard, and paid masterclasses that have helped over 1,200 doctors improve their financial literacy and achieve tax‑efficient wealth building.

So if you've ever thought, I know I should be investing, but I'm scared I'll lose money, then this video is for you. And if investing feels complex, risky or overwhelming, you're not alone. In fact, in a Money Wise Doctor poll, a survey of over 1200 doctors, dentists and healthcare professionals, 58% said they felt investing was too risky, too complex or too complicated to start with. So here's the problem though. Without investing, it's almost impossible to build long term wealth or financial freedom. I mean, the math doesn't matter. But investing badly can also be worse. So how do you invest without blowing yourself up financially? Let's break it down in this video. Now before we go on, why should you even listen? Look, if we've not met before, I'm Dr. Andre Grim, I'm the founder of moneywisedoctor.com I'm a former salaried NHS GP and I've been investing for over 21 years. And I'm also the author of the Money Wise Doctor which is an Amazon bestseller on investing, money management and retirement planning. Right now we've got that out of the way. Investing tax efficiently actually helped me reach financial freedom and leave my salary job three years ago in my 30s. And since then I've taught these principles to thousands of doctors, dentists and healthcare professionals through my master classes, conferences, one to one sessions and all of that. But now here's the uncomfortable truth most people don't realize, and I get to see this from doctors as well, the biggest risk in investing is not a market crash. It's being forced to sell at the worst possible time. And that almost never happens because someone picked the wrong fund or the wrong stock. It often happens because they started investing before their foundations were ready. Now let's jump into the core mistakes and dissect it. Most people don't fail at investing because they choose the wrong stock or the wrong fund. We established that they failed because they had no emergency buffer, they had poor cash flow clarity, they had no financial protection and they had no clear strategy. Now when life happens, a boiler breaks, a car dies, a contract ends or ill health intervenes, they panic and they sell. Sometimes at the worst possible times. And that is how good investments turn into bad outcomes. Now I'm going to show you a simple framework I've been teaching in my investment master classes to help you prepare for investing is called scrubs. It's S C R U B S. Now as a doctor healthcare professional, just like you scrub before a procedure or even during your scrub, you scrub before you invest. Scrubs protects you from the biggest enemy of investing. The biggest enemy of investing success is being forced to sell too early. You know, let me walk you through how the scrubs work. S is for safety net. So before you invest a single pound, you want to have an emergency fund. Okay? If you are employed, aim for three to six months worth of essential expenses. If you are locomotive, self employed or in the private practice, you might be aiming for six months worth of your living expenses covered. This money is not for growth, it's for survival and stability. Basically, if you spend 3,000amonth, you're aiming for 9K. Now where do you keep it? You can keep it in an easy access isa Cash isa. You can keep it in premium bonds or in a high interest account. But the liquidity matters more than returns. Here. Now, if one unexpected bill will force you to sell your investments at the wrong time, you're not ready yet. You need to prepare. Before you go in, I'll give you a quick real world example from a locum GP who attended one of my tax efficient investment masterclasses recently. He shared how he has started investing aggressively with no emergency fund. Things were going well. Everything looked fine until his boiler failed mid winter. It wasn't insured and he didn't have any savings. He didn't want to use a credit card and go into further debt. So he sold some of his investments during the market dip when the market was down. The loss wasn't the market, markets go up and down. It was timing.
You can't invest confidently if you have one emergency away from financial disaster. Disaster. You need to build your financial foundations first. I've read over 250 books on personal finance and business. Not one of them explains specific issues that affect medics like NHS pensions, financial anxiety, investing, student loans and much more. Now let's look at C. C is for clarity. Continuous education. Now, do you know what comes in each month? What goes out? Do you know what comes into your account? What's the actual surplus? How much is your living expenses to start with that and you learn. Are you learning enough to avoid panics when the market is deep? Do you have that clarity? Do you have that continuous education? Because panic selling is an education problem, it's not an intelligence problem. Doctors are intelligent, obvious. Now let's look at R R is remove high interest debt. We are going through the Scrubs framework. If you are paying 20 to 30% interest on a credit card or overdraft, paying them off is a guaranteed return on investment is better. A 25% credit card if you clear it is like a risk free 25% return on your money. It's hard to find a market that can beat that. Now you is underwriting your risk. If your income stops tomorrow, what happens? Insurance is not a luxury. Think about things like proper indemnity for your clinical work, income protection insurance, life insurance and critical illness insurance. All those kind of stuff. These are not boring. Well, they are boring, but they protect your entire plan. Your biggest asset is not your portfolio is your ability to earn an income. That's really important now. B in the scrub framework is build your blueprint. So here's how. Before you invest, ask yourself two simple questions to build your strategy and your goal. What is this money for? 1, 2. When will I need it? Investing without a plan is like treating without a diagnosis. Okay, Time horizon and purpose determine everything now. S in the Scrub framework is shield from taxes. So this is where tax efficiency comes in. Think of it like containers before the content. So you want the tax wrapper first. Examples of tax efficient wrappers will include things like your stock and shares, isa, your personal pension like your sip, or even your LISA stock and shares. And then there are also advanced options like the eis, only if appropriate. Now tax efficiency can matter more than the returns because it can actually put a dent in your returns. So why does Scrubs matter? It's not about delaying investments forever, it's about investing from a place of stability and not stress. And that's when compounding actually works in your favor. And that's how long term financial independence and freedom is built. So let me ask you which part of the Scrubs framework do you need to fix first? And which one have you already done? And hey, if you want to check your Investing Readiness scorecard, I've linked a free three minute scorecard in the description below. You can use it to check for yourself. Over 1000 doctors and healthcare professionals have already used it to spot huge gaps and avoid costly mistakes before investing so that they are investing when they were ready. If this video helped you share it with one colleague who is investing without the safety net, help keep them out of trouble. Alright then, see you in the next one. Bye bye.
