If you are a doctor, a healthcare professional or just a self employed person in the uk, you've got to check if you have to do self assessment so that you don't end up with penalties from hmroc. Now, if you are self employed or you have side hustles that get you income above a thousand pounds even before expenses, 2 if you are in a business partnership, 3 if you're a director of a limited company, 4 if you earn income through your investments like capital gains tax, and 5 if you're a high income earner, that is if you earn above 150k, then you have to do self assessment. In some instance, HMR might write you as well to ask you to do self assessment. I like to do self assessment because it allows me to claim back expenses, like if you've donated to charity, if I've contributed extra to my pension.
