The speaker started writing music in second grade, when they were allowed to skip social studies class once a week to work with their music teacher on songs. They found an old sheet of that early music years later.

How long have you been writing your own music? Oh man, when did that start? I'll tell you, I wrote my first song in the second grade, and I remember this the other day. I found the sheet music I wrote, and it was hilarious. I would skip— in the second grade, we had music class, and then it was like social studies class from like 2 to 3 o'clock, okay? And then we went home. But once a week, I was able to skip my social studies class in the second grade to go write songs with my music teacher.
