How to Talk to Your Boss - Scripts for All 4 Types

In this instructional video, career coach Natalie Fisher expands on her previous overview of four boss archetypes—Results Driver, Rallier, Rescuer, and Researcher—by providing concrete communication scripts and tactics tailored to each type. She explains why using a one‑size‑fits‑all approach is like trying to charge an iPhone with an Android charger, leading to frustration and blame. Instead, she advocates adapting one’s messaging to match the boss’s preferred style, which benefits the employee more than the boss. For each archetype she outlines five specific strategies: - Results Driver: bold, quantified opening statements; bullet‑point, scannable format; time‑boxed discussions; quantifiable outcomes; readiness for interruptions. - Rallier: paint a vision; use emotional language; link to larger purpose; share success stories; highlight team impact. - Rescuer: empathize with team harmony; address concerns proactively; use collaborative language; demonstrate emotional intelligence; provide reassurance. - Researcher: deliver comprehensive analysis with risks/benefits; cite industry standards; show systematic thinking with phases; anticipate questions; document and follow up with detailed emails. Natalie emphasizes that adapting communication is a strategic skill, not a personality change, and invites viewers to engage via likes, comments, and a paid mastermind for deeper coaching.

Hey, this video is part of a series on how to talk to your boss. In this video, I'm going to tell you exactly how to communicate with each type of boss. And in the last video, 4 Types of Bosses and How to Communicate with Them, I broke down exactly what kind of bosses, what kind of boss you might have, the 4 different types, and how to identify them. And in this video, I'm going to tell you exactly how to communicate with each one. Using examples that will make you much more effective and will make them much more responsive to you. So stay tuned. Hey, I'm Natalie. I help career professionals get into their 6-figure jobs and thrive within them. And this series of videos is to help you communicate more effectively with your boss so that you can get what you need from them and you can essentially help them to help you. And we don't have this skill because a lot of the times we just think we need to keep communicating in the same way, or we don't have the tools to communicate differently. So Let me start off by recapping the kinds of bosses. So the first kind of boss is the results driver. The second kind of boss is the rallier. The third kind of boss is the researcher, and the fourth kind is the rescuer. So each of these kind of bosses has a different way that they like to be communicated with. They have different things that make their ears perk up. They have different ways that they love to, to be, you know, introduced new information to. They have things that they really appreciate, and then they have some things that they have absolutely no patience for. So when we don't communicate with them in the way that they need, we end up kind of shooting ourselves in the foot and getting frustrated. So it's kind of like if you were trying to plug in your iPhone to an Android charger and That wasn't working, but you just kept trying to use the same charger over and over again, right? Now that seems silly, but when we're communicating with our boss in the wrong way and we just keep doing it over and over, and what tends to happen, what I see happening is people will tend to get frustrated and then blame the boss and say, ah, they're not helping me, they're not cooperative, they're not listening. And while that's true, we can't change them or who they are or what they're going to do. So what we can do is we can change the way that we communicate our message and what we have to communicate, right? And we can share our points in a different way. And some people misunderstand me and they think that I'm saying, well, change yourself, right? Change your personality. And I'm not saying that at all. That's a misconception. What I'm saying is adjust your way of communicating your message so that it can be heard by the person you need to hear it and you can get what you want. So it's really the smartest thing you can do, right? Because if we think about blaming, blaming them or wishing were different, continuing to, continuing to wish they were different is arguing with reality. And when we argue with reality, we lose 100% of the time, right? So adapting your communication style will give you what you need. It's not done for them. It's done for you. Okay, so let's break down the steps that we need to take in order to communicate with each of them. So the results driver boss. So some good strategies for them are to open with a really bold statement that will get their attention. So for example, this will save us $50K annually. Don't explain how, don't go into any of the details. Just give them a really bold statement that'll catch their attention, right? Second, a good way to communicate with them is use simple bullet points, structure everything in quick, Scannable, like easy format so they can see exactly what they want to see really quickly, right? Timebox discussions with them. Say, I need 5 minutes to show you something important. Okay? Like, and if just framing it like that, they're going to think of, they're going to respect that. They're going to like, they're going to be like, okay, 5 minutes. Okay. What you got? 4, quantify everything so you can turn qualitative benefits into measurable outcomes. They are going to really appreciate that. 5, prepare for interruptions. So have your main point ready in the first 30 seconds because these type of people tend to like to just get to the point and interrupt you, right? And some people, if, if say you clash with the boss like that and you don't like how they are, how they are, just consider yourself really smart for adapting your style to what they respect. And this will have them responding to you differently and have a win-win situation all around. Okay, now let's talk about how to manage a rallier boss. So some strategies for a rallier boss. And if you didn't get the high level of what each of these bosses is so you can identify which one you are working with, watch my last video on the 4 different types of bosses, and I break that down for you. I had to break this up into 2 videos because otherwise it was getting too long. So how do I— how to adapt your message to a rallier boss? One, Paint the vision. Imagine if our team became the industry leader in, and then put in what you're working on. 2, use emotional language. This will energize our clients and transform their experience. 3, connect it to the bigger purpose. Connect what you want to do, what you want approval for, to the bigger purpose. Say, this aligns with our mission to innovate because this and this and this. 4, Share success stories. Tell inspiring examples of another company. Maybe say, oh, this company implemented this and this is what they saw as the result, right? 5, show a team impact. The whole department will feel proud of this achievement. And this is appealing to a very different brain, to a very different focus than the results driver boss, right? So now let's move on to the rescuer boss. 1, here, adaptation strategies to adapt your communication to arrest your boss. 1, empathize team harmony. Say, this approach will reduce the stress for everyone. This will save everyone time. Address common concerns proactively. You can say something like, I know this might worry some people, so here's how we might support them in telling them. 3, use collaborative language. You can say, what if we tried this together and adjusted it as needed? What if we gave it a try and assessed after X point of time? 4, show emotional intelligence. You can say something like, I can see this decision feels pretty overwhelming. And number 5, provide reassurance. Say, this change will actually make everyone's job easier, and here's why. And give them some reasons. So this is kind of addressing what they're worried about without them even having to tell you if you are dealing with a rescuer boss. All right, let's move on to the researcher boss and how to communicate to them very effectively. So you might notice that you, as you listen to these points, you might be like, oh, I already do that, or that's my preferred way of communicating. And that's great. It tells you that you are identifying with one of these types of bosses. So if you are in a leadership position, then you might be one of these types of bosses, and this would be really helpful in how you can tell your team that you prefer to be communicated with. So research your bosses, how to adapt your message to them. 1, provide comprehensive analysis. Include risks, benefits, and a mitigation plan. 2, reference industry standards. They love this. Leading companies use this approach, and this is their reason— these are their reasons why. 3, Show systematic thinking. So you can say something like, I've identified 3 phrases with specific milestones, or 3 phases. Say these— this phase 1 will be this— will be this point. Phase 2 will be this point. Phase 3 will be this point. 4, this like puts their nervous system at ease and calms them right down. 4, anticipate questions. So if they say, um, prepare for, for answers for every, what if this, what if that, what if this, right? Because people who are really averse to risk, they're going to be thinking that way. 5, document everything, follow up with conversations, and make sure that you're checking in with detailed emails, email summaries. So this type of boss might be more potentially, or have the tendency to want to micromanage. And then, and then that's it. Those are the 5. So you can take these and try them out.
