In this instructional YouTube video, Natalie Fisher explains how to answer the situational interview question, “Tell me about a time you had to communicate with a diverse group of people to come to one decision.” She first outlines why employers ask this question—to assess a candidate’s communication style and adaptability across cultures and differing perspectives. Fisher then introduces the SARI formula (Situation, Action, Result, Interesting features), a variant of the STAR method, and walks through each component. Using a concrete example of organizing a multicultural holiday potluck, she details the situation (a team with diverse cultural celebrations), the actions taken (one‑on‑one conversations to gather ideas), the result (a simple potluck that fostered cultural sharing), and interesting features (learned the value of listening and collaborative decision‑making). The video concludes with key takeaways about inclusive communication and promotes a free “Ultimate Guide to Situational Interviewing” that includes the SARI breakdown, additional story templates, and worksheets for viewers to craft their own answers.

Hi there, my name is Natalie Fisher, and in this video we will answer another situational interview question. And this one goes like this: tell me about a time you had to communicate with a diverse group of people to come to one decision. So in this video, we're going to cover why they ask this question, what they want to know, why specifically this question, and a concrete example of an experience to get you thinking about your own story and exactly how to answer it. So without further ado, let's get started. Stay tuned. So why do they ask this question? It seems like a very specific question to ask, doesn't it? So this question is to find out about your communication style and how you're able to adapt it to different types of situations with different people, possibly people from different cultures or people with different ethnicities or people who don't normally work together and have a very wide range of beliefs, thoughts, and experiences. So here's how you're going to answer. You're going to use the SARI formula, and the SARI formula goes like this. So it's situation, Action, result, interesting features. So it can be called the STAR, SAR, like you might have heard of the STAR interview formula before. It's all the same thing, and in this video we're going to go in depth as to how to use it. So you'll want to pick a powerful story to tell for this answer. It's going to paint a good picture of why you did what you did and what happened in the end. So let's jump right into an example. So step 1, the situation. So this is where you're going to set up the story and explain exactly what was going on. You want to kind of create a mental picture in their mind. So here goes. We had many people on the team that came from diverse cultures. They all had a different way of celebrating the holidays. So how do you plan a holiday party for people who have such different ways of celebrating? Or do you not celebrate at all? That's step 1. We've just set the stage. No need to say anything else. Step 2, action. What did you do here? So the first action was sat down in the one-on-ones, sat down one-on-one speaking to each person and asked them for their ideas and their input on how to handle our diverse group and how to bring everyone together in a celebration for the holidays. Step 3 was the result. So here we ended up having a potluck where everyone made a dish from their culture. So no gifts or any festive stuff or anything over the top. We just agreed to keep it simple and we would have time to just gather together, share food from our different cultures and the different things that we all like to do, and we would learn about each other in order to work better together. And there you have it. Step 4, we're going to cover some bonus interesting features here. And normally with the interesting features, you want to talk about what you learned from the story or any resources that you used, any tools in your toolbox. So what went well here? I learned that I don't have to make any decisions all on my own, especially if I'm not as knowledgeable as some other people in the group. So calling on the group for their ideas was the best way to come up with something that worked for everyone but still achieved our goal, which was to come together as a stronger team. So I learned that good communication skills is more about listening really well to what other people are saying, especially with such a diverse group of people with such completely different backgrounds and beliefs. And there we have it. Thank you so much for watching.
