The BIGGEST career mistake to avoid (and you're probably making already!)

Natalie Fisher says the biggest career mistake is not recognizing your own value. She shares two questions to ask yourself: what impact did you have that someone else would have done differently, and what would have happened if you weren't there. A client completed an audit in record time through her unique approach to stakeholder communication but didn't realize her contribution until examining it.

In this video, I'm going to tell you the one thing that will always hold you back in your life and in your career. And if you master it, it's going to make you totally unstoppable and allow you to achieve any goal you desire. So stay tuned. So when people come to me, the biggest thing that is actually stopping them is that they are not aware of their own value and they're not articulating it properly because they don't know it. Your belief in your own value when you don't have a strong belief in it, you're not going to be able to articulate it properly, or you're not going to be able to talk about it really, really well in job interviews because you're not aware of it yourself. And this is the biggest thing that I see. So the reason for this is external factors are normally affecting people from really knowing their own value. And so something that happened in the past, like maybe they failed an interview or a recruiter told them something that wasn't very helpful or was demotivating. Somebody said some demotivating words to you once, or you had an experience, and all of a sudden you totally forget all the good things that you've done and all the value that you've been able to bring. And all this compounded over time means that you don't have a clear idea of what your own value is and what you actually bring. So we don't often consciously practice thinking about our own value, let alone articulating it. And so all of a sudden it's time to go for a job interview, look for a job, get a promotion, or go for an interview, and you're scrambling to figure this out. But this is something that that you should be thinking about on a consistent basis. So when you are doing things at work, when you are doing projects and accomplishing tasks and stuff, you want to be able to take notes, even mental notes, of the value that you're bringing. Okay, because there's always 2 powerful questions that you can ask is, what impact did I have on the organization by the steps that I took here when somebody else would have done it differently? And the second question is, what would have happened if I was not there to do this work? Right? And when you answer those 2 questions, you can see that there was a very clear thing that you did and a very clear thing that you contributed. And that is where you start to be able to articulate your value really powerfully. A lot of people think that they're not doing anything special or anything different, right? So I had a client recently who was having trouble articulating her stories in interviews, and she told me that she really believed that she wasn't contributing anything special. She's like, yeah, I am like every other candidate. There isn't anything that makes me different. So the thing here is, is that you are always going to think that because you are so close to it, right? So you're just doing your job. You're— you don't see it as anything special, but it's because you— it's just come very naturally to you, and that's just what you do. For example, with this client, she was like, yeah, I just, you know, I pushed through this audit in record time. And I did it by sitting down with everybody and explaining things really clearly. And then they were able to sign off on the paperwork and everything was able to get moved forward. And she's like, but it was fine. That's what anybody would have done, right? Wrong. She approached it in one way. She took the initiative of having meetings with everybody and explaining everything when somebody else might not have done that, right? They might have done something that worked, but they would have done it differently than her, right? Because she was the only person who did it that specific way, the way that she spoke to everybody, the way that she communicated, everything that she did was her own unique way of doing it, right? So the problem is that she was like, oh, well, everybody just would have done the same thing. And that's what we all think. We all think that everybody just, you know, I'm just doing my job. It's nothing special, right? But when I asked her, what was the impact of what you did? What ended up happening as a result of what you did? Then she told me that they were able to meet the requirement in record time and/or get it done on time Otherwise it might not have gone through. And secondly, she was able to get everybody on board so that the signatures could happen and so everything could happen. The mistake is not knowing your own value. The reason why people don't know their own value. Things that can stop them. Things that can make them forget their value or not pay attention to it. And then 4, being too close to your own value so you don't even really know why what you do is different or special.
