A short conversational excerpt from a 2025 YouTube discussion about downtown revitalization challenges. Speakers describe how a functioning "meal system" (people eating breakfast/lunch/dinner downtown) supports local restaurants and the wider community economy, and note that reverse commuting to Sorrento Valley shifts traffic and dining patterns.
Fred, he's like you and me chatting with Andy and I was unaware and he was talking about the revitalization of downtown because he was, you know, part of that team for a while. And it's just an interesting experience because that room is full of glass and so you get like ambulances going by every now and again. But Andy was saying a requirement to having a thriving downtown is to have sort of A2 meal system where you eat like breakfast, lunch there or lunch and dinner there. And so if you don't have that set up and there's not a lot of people working downtown that a lot of the restaurants suffer and that kind of takes that whole community economy down. And he's like, that's also kind of why you're seeing a lot of the Sorrento Valley traffic because a lot of people are reverse commuting out of downtown headed up to Sorrento Valley. So you get either a breakfast or dinner later.
