Retatrutide, a new weight-loss drug, claims to preserve muscle mass. But the only published study shows users lost about 6.5 kg of lean mass, roughly 38% of their total weight loss. Current evidence suggests it doesn't preserve muscle better than existing GLP-1 drugs.
Everyone's gone crazy about retatrutide.
Retatrutide. Retatrutide. Retatrutide. This is going to be a trillion-dollar drug.
This new GLP-3, new generation weight loss drug, that's a GIP, GLP-1, and glucagon receptor agonist. The big claim is that it not only causes gangbuster weight loss, but that preserves lean mass. I did a little digging and I couldn't find any published data really supporting this claim. All roads led back to a new 2025 Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology paper, and there was 6.5 kilograms that is over 14 pounds. This is the size of your average 4-month-old infant. Lean mass loss, that is 38% of total weight loss as lean mass. So is reta better for lean mass loss versus other GLP-1s? Not according to the published data.
