So most often people stretch when they feel pain. Well, pain might be coming from actually the pain experienced by a muscle that is being overstretched anyway, or you might be experiencing pain from a muscle which is actually tense and tight. So if you're somebody who has hip pain from laying down and it's not specific to the joint or the bone, it may be from overstretching of those muscles surrounding the hip joints, around the knee.
