Hey. Oh. Welcome to the 100 the $100 show. 10 minutes to a better business every single day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the $100 MBA, a complete business training and community online. And in today's lesson you will learn the one thing you should never outsource. When I say outsource, let me be clear. I'm talking about getting somebody outside your company to to take care of something for you. Commonly outsource your website design. You don't need maybe a website designer every day, so you outsource it. You might have an account that you outsource during tax time. You might outsource somebody to create some company swag for an event. You might even outsource a whole department like customer service. But there's one thing you should never outsource. Because it can make or break your business. It greatly influences your business and in such a strong way that you should be the one that has control over it. You, the leader of the business. What is that one thing and why is it so important? That's what we get into in today's episode. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business at the top of the episode, I listed off a whole bunch of things that you can outsource and that's totally fine. Outsourcing is a great way to get some things done you don't necessarily need a full time hire for. But the one thing you should never outsource is leadership. Leadership is what makes your business ticket. It's what communicates your vision, your purpose, why you started this business in the first place, what's important, what are the priorities, how to deal with difficult situations. All this is your leadership. Now don't get me wrong, you can hire managers. Of course you gotta hire managers, but they gotta be part of the company. They have to be fully committed. They can be employees, they can be partners. But the point here is, is that if you're not interested in leadership or you're not interested in hiring people that are and guiding them, then you're gonna have a very difficult time in business. You're better off just being an investor. Leadership is more than just what you say and do. It's what your team says and does when you're not around. Now, a lot of people subscribe to the idea that as a leader, you're responsible for when things go wrong. Things go wrong in your business. It's a lack of leadership. I don't entirely agree with that. I'd probably say 95% of the time that's true. But sometimes you're just going to get a dud employee. People that are just not a great hire and it was hard for you to vet in the beginning and they slip through the cracks and that's okay. You learn from your mistakes and you move on. But generally you are responsible for everything that goes wrong in the business and it's due to the leadership or lack of leadership that you have. Even if you have a small team of a few players, they are looking to you when it comes to what's acceptable, what's important. Where are we going with this business? How is my job going to look, you know, a month from now, three years from now, ten years from now? You need to provide answers to these questions to your team. Even if you're not the one that's communicating that directly. You need to communicate that to the managers. You have to lead, you got to steer the ship. And I found that over the years. This is a skill that takes a lot of time to cultivate. I've reviewed a lot of leadership books here on the show with must read episodes and they definitely help. But the best teacher is experience. As long as you're going to embrace this role, you'll be fine. It's. It's when you shy away from your leadership responsibilities when things go wrong. And there's a difference between leadership and management. Management is taking care of tasks to dos organizing priorities. You can have a manager that's not a great leader. By definition, a leader has people that want to follow them. You got to assert your leadership. And you don't have to do this by force. You could do this by example. You can show people you expect of them by doing it yourself. Now, one of the things I struggled with when it came to leadership, and I've been working on for some time, is understanding that leaders need to communicate more often than they think. You need to communicate where the company's going, your vision for the company, your story, why you started this thing in the first place, your why and why are they integral to the success of the business? People need to understand that. They need to know that and need to continue to do that and not just do it once a year or something like that. There's new people joining your team all the time and, and they need to hear that over and over. In my experience, the best leaders make the toughest decisions. It's not fun being a leader. It definitely is not super fun. Yes, it's a position of power and significance, but it's a lot of pressure. Over time, you start to accept that responsibility and the pressure itself becomes second nature. Now what happens when you outsource this idea of leadership? And I've seen this before, people try to create companies without any leadership. The team gets lost. And often what they do is they outsource some sort of leader to come in, rah rah their crowd, rah rah their team, give them some inspirational quotes, give them some mission statement, and it just falls on deaf ears because it's not something consistent. It's not something that's a part of the fabric of the company. It's not coming from the person that started the company or the people that started the company. It's a mistake. Now, you don't have to have as an individual all the responsibility. You can share the responsibility of with other leaders in your business, other founders, other C level players. The bigger your business, the bigger the burden. So you want to make sure you spread that out if you can. And it doesn't matter how big or small your business is. A lot of people say, well, my business is so big, I don't really need leadership. I have all these managers that do everything I can kind of sit back and relax. Think again. The best big businesses in the world, the most successful ones, have strong leaders. Tim Cook, Apple, Jeff Bezos, Amazon, Elon Musk, Tesla, Reed Hastings, Netflix. I can go on and on. These people are leaders. And those companies have such a strong culture because of it.

To wrap up today's lesson. In our business, we outsource a whole bunch of things all the time, but we make sure that we treat every single person that we work with, whether they're a full time employee or they're a contracted employee, or somebody that's working just part time, or somebody that's just jumping in to do a quick project, that they understand our culture, understand our business, and they're led by our leadership. Sometimes we have freelancers that come in to do a quick project and like, oh, I didn't know that I was going to be having this orientation. And they're a little caught off guard, but that's okay. Say, hey, this is what we do with everybody we work with. It's important for you to understand how we operate, how we work, what we believe in and who you're working with. And they get it after a few days, like, okay, cool, this is different. I like this. This gives me a bigger picture of what I'm working on and helps me do a better job. They also know they have somebody they can speak to. They have questions. They understand that this place is organized and has direction. So no matter what, whoever works with you in your company does any kind of work, they need to be led by you and or your leadership team. All right, that wraps up today's lesson. A lot of people think of leadership as being bossy. No, what you're doing as a leader is guiding your team in the right direction. That's a great way to look at it, and it took me a while to get that. I wanted to pass it on to you. All right, I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. Free ride Friday. I'll see you then. Take care.
