Omar Zenhom shows how visiting a peer's more successful clothing business taught him that growth comes from changing yourself, not just working harder. He recommends hiring a mentor, studying how Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos reinvented themselves, and committing to uncomfortable habit changes.

Hey O. Welcome to the Hundred Dollar MBA show. There's no time to waste. That's why we deliver daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the Hundred Dollar mba, a complete business training and community online. And in today's lesson you will learn how to make massive improvements in your business. You might be in business for some time now, maybe it's been six months, a year, a few years, and you've been doing pretty well, right? But you want to get to the next level. You want to leapfrog your way to another level of success. But your growth has just been all right. How do you make a massive change? How do you make a massive improvement in your business? That's what we're going to be talking about today. I've been through these ruts a few too many times and I'll tell you exactly how I get out of them. I must warn you though, this is going to make total sense when you hear it and it's going to motivate you to take action. That's how I'm really pumped to teach today's episode. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. Here's the bottom line. If you Want massive change in your business, massive improvement. You got to do something different. You can't keep doing the, the same thing you've been doing and hoping that you're going to get a different result. There's only so much hard work you can do. You can, you know, do the same tasks as much as you can, but there's only 24 hours a day you got to start doing different things to make a difference. I know this sounds logical, but I'm going to show you how and what I mean exactly. Many of you don't know, but early in my days, I used to have my own clothing line. It was my E commerce business. I sold high end tailored men's clothing in my first two years in business. It was all right. I was making a profit, barely. I was working so hard and I was pulling out my hair out of frustration of not being able to really grow at a greater scale. And what made the change, what made the change where we started to do so much better than we were last year was I did something differently. I changed how I did business. But really what happened is I changed. Me, the founder of the company, I did something different. And what happened was I met somebody by chance that had a very big chain of female clothing stores. And he was basically five years ahead of me or where I wanted to be in five years. And we kind of got to know each other over email and then in person. And he was generous enough to invite me over to his house and to go see his factory and his stores over in Florida. So I took him up on his offer and that was the decision that really changed things. Where it's like I came to the realization I don't have all the answers. I tried it my way. I tried it with what I know. Let me see if this person can help me learn or I could do something that will change my business. And indeed, he did do that. He, you know, mentored me basically and showed me how I need to change as an entrepreneur, how I need to change my business. And I realized the changes I need to make in my business required for me to change what I do every day. Now, let me just tell you offhand, it was hard work because changing your habits and changing who you are is uncomfortable. First of all, it's very confrontational because you start to feel like you're not so great. You usually feel you're pretty good, hey, I got a business, I'm doing well. But then you face somebody who's doing so much better than you and you realize all the Things you're not doing right, so. So it shakes your world a little bit for a few days. But then once you get over that, you realize, okay, this is what I have to do if I want to improve, and that makes all the difference in the world. So if you're stuck, you need to do something differently. And that different thing is you need to change. You need to evolve. You need to become something different, somebody different. I know that sounds uncomfortable, but you're just not going to do different things if you're the same person. You have to change as a person. I'm not going to win the gold medal in figure skating if I don't know how to ice skate. I know that sounds a bit funny, but if I don't ice skate, if I don't do the things it requires to get a gold medal, eventually get a gold medal in that sport, how do I expect to get the gold medal? So if you want to be this massive entrepreneur, this amazing success, but you don't want to do the things that require you to get there, then how do you expect it to happen? And for most of us, we're willing to do it, but we don't know exactly what to do. And that's okay. But what's not okay is just sitting on your laurels. You have to take action. You have to say, hey, I got to move to the next level. I got to figure out the things I need to do to make a shift. And yes, it starts with finding somebody who is a bit ahead of you, that knows what they're doing and can help you out, have been there before, but that person only could do so much. What I mean is that you might get a coach, and they'll sit down with you and say, hey, this is what you're doing wrong. This is what you have to do. This is the work you have to implement. They might even give you a detailed game plan. But if you don't do those things, if you just slip back to your old ways, then nothing's going to happen. The coach, he or she can't do the work for you. You have to change. You have to commit to doing these things that you don't normally do. And that's what it means to change as a person is to do different things. If I start ice skating, I become an ice skater, right? Some of us know what we have to do, but just don't do it. But if you're in the majority, where you're just like, hey, I'm stuck. I need some help, I don't know exactly what to do. I need a game plan specific to me. Find somebody who is somewhere you want to be in the future. Somebody who's like, hey, that's where I want to be in the future in the next five, 10 years and find out if they are willing to mentor you or coach you. If you have to pay money, pay money. It's money well spent. Investing in yourself, it means investing in your business. That's just the start again, once you figure out what you have to do, the changes you have to make, you have to commit to changing your life to make it happen. If your game plan requires you to get up at 7 in the morning to start working and you normally get up at 9, you're going to have to do that. You're going to have to change. If you don't, you're not going to get what you're asking for, then you really don't want it that bad. And that's just a reality you'll just have to deal with. And maybe you'll come to a reality that maybe I don't want it. But the bottom line is if you want to make a massive change in your business, you. You got to take some massive action to make massive changes within yourself. The easiest way to illustrate what I mean is to take a look of an extreme example. Let's take a look at one of the most successful entrepreneurs, Bill Gates. Okay, how did Bill Gates become Bill Gates? How did he get that success? Well, he's a type of person. He is a person that produces success. That's how things happen, right? So the easiest way is just to take a look at his life. What did he do in his life to make it happen? There's tons of videos and documentaries and books that analyze figures like Bill Gates, like Phil Knight, founder of Nike, like Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. You get the point. You can study and find out what they do every day, what their habits are, and it can give you an example. It's not going to be a game plan for you, but it's going to give you an example of, oh, okay, that person is different. They're doing different things than what I'm doing. And that's why they have those results. They're. This is what I love about biographies. I love reading biographies because it gives me an example and it gives me the insight of what it takes to become that type of person. And it doesn't have to be financial success. It could be other kinds of successes. It could be overcoming difficulty like the story of Nelson Mandela or being an influential character like Muhammad Ali. I remember when I read the autobiography of Arnold Schwarzenegger. I went into that book. Not a fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger. I didn't really know much about him. I just thought of him as some big muscly guy that did some action movies, right? But when I read his autobiography, boy did I learn what kind of person this person is. What he had to do from a young age every day to become successful at all levels, at all different things in life. Whether was becoming Mr. Olympia, whether it's being the highest paid actor in Hollywood, whether it's being the governor of California, incredible things that he had to do to overcome growing up as a small child in Austria from a poor family. By reading these stories, you realize, oh boy, I need to change. I need to do things differently if I want to have the kind of success I want. So understand, your business is not going to change if you don't change. And I'm sharing this with you not only as a reminder to you, but to myself. I I have gone through a plateau myself with our own business and I was seeking for some massive change and I realized, hey, I got to do this. You know, I've been here before and I hired a coach and got a game plan and I'm doing things differently now so I can shake things up. I have no choice. If I want to take it to the next level, I have to do this. I have to do the uncomfortable thing and do things differently.

Favorite people to study are the people that reinvent themselves constantly to become legendary. Whether it's Michael Jackson who started off as this cute kid in the Jackson 5 and then evolved to a more soulful disco type of person with the Jacksons and Off the Wall and then evolved again and became the best selling artist of all time with Thriller. Or Anthony Bourdain. The late Anthony Bourdain. Boy, was I torn up when I heard that he passed away last year. But he went through some major evolutions. He struggled as a cook and then became a world renowned chef and then evolved from there to becoming an amazing writer and then became a TV host and then became a travel expert. Constantly evolving and changing and reinventing himself. This is how you become more and more successful. This is how you become legendary. This is how you continue to win. It's easy to get one win, anybody can get lucky. But to continue to win, you got to keep evolving, keep reinventing yourself. And every time you do that, it's a little uncomfortable because you have to change. You have to admit to yourself, oh, I'm not good enough yet to get to that next level. I need to change so I can do that. But the sacrifice will be worth it. Thank you so much for listening to the $100 MBA show. If you love what you hear, drop us an itunes rating and review. In show business, what do you think they call somebody who doesn't reinvent themselves, that doesn't evolve, that doesn't change and become better? A one hit wonder. You don't want to be a one hit wonder in business and the only way to prevent that is to keep improving yourself and understand that you don't have all the answers. You just can't. If you continue to become a learner and this is something I've learned from the people that I admire, if you continue to be a learner and be humble, you'll get greater and greater at business and your business will improve and reap the benefits. Thank you so much for listening. I'll check you in tomorrow's episode, Free ride Friday. I'll see you then. Take care.
