That's why we deliver daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the Hundred Dollar mba, a complete business training and community online. And in today's lesson you will learn how to craft the perfect welcome email for your customers. When your customers buy your product or service, hopes are high, expectations are high, and you only have one chance to make a first impression. And that first impression is that welcome email you send them. The email says thanks for trusting us with your dollars. This is an opportunity you want to capitalize to make sure your customers know that you actually care about them and their success. Too many of us waste this opportunity with a cookie cutter email. We all get too many of these standardized newsletter looking emails in our inboxes every day. If you want to stand out, you got to do it differently. And that's what we're going to be talking about today. How to write an honest welcome email. That's actually from you, the founder of the company, asking them how you can serve them. This welcome email that we're going to build together is going to be incredibly powerful and and it's gonna help make your business grow. Trust me, I know. I've worked on this for so many years and I'm still improving my welcome email. I'll give you surefire examples so you can get started with your own. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. I was inspired to write a better welcome email to my customers by Derek Sivers Derek Sivers is A award winning author and speaker and the founder of CD Baby. He, he sold the company and gave most of the money to charity. That tells you a little bit about Derek as a person. But when Derek started CD Baby, he decided to give a personal touch to his welcome emails. He mentions this email in his book Anything youg Want. We did a must read episode on that book. It's a great book, you should definitely check it out. But I'm going to read you the email, that welcome email that he wrote to his customers. Now this is just an example and in fact my welcome email is totally different. But the point is, is that this email inspired me to try harder to not just see this as something I have to do, but to really genuinely write something to my customers. Really write a love note to them saying thanks, you're helping me do what I love. Here's Derek Sivers welcome email. Now before I read you the email, a little bit about CD Baby. Well, it's exactly what it sounds like. It's an online store to buy music CDs. People would go online, order their CDs and they would ship them out to them. So here's Derek Sivers welcome email. Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with sterilized contamination free gloves and placed on a satin pillow. A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure it was in the best possible condition before mailing. Our packing specialists from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold lined box that money can buy. We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of Portland waved bon voyage to your package on its way to you in a private CD Baby jet on this day, Friday, June 6th. I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did. Your picture is on our wall as customer of the year. We're all exhausted, but we can't wait for you to come back to cdbaby.com okay. What an awesome and delightful email. Imagine ordering something online from a company and getting an email like that. It's gonna make you chuckle, it's gonna make you smile, it's gonna make you remember them and say, I like these guys. I like these people. Now obviously you know much of this email is a joke and there's no private jet or anything like that, but it conveys their care for the customer. I really like that and it inspired me. So here are my best tips. When it Comes to crafting your own welcome email to customers. Number one, write the email as if you're writing an email to a friend. Really imagine you're writing this email to a friend and not to a customer. Of course you want to address yourself, say, hey, this is Omar, the co founder and CEO of Webinar Ninja. And I wanted to write to you personally. I wanted to welcome you and ask you how I can make your experience better. And then I ask him one solid question. And this question is so important. And it goes something like this. Just curious, what were you looking to achieve with Webinar Ninja? And then I write and say, reply and let me know. Now I know as soon as I said that right now most of you got like, reply, I'm gonna have to answer all these emails. If replying to an email is gonna keep a customer, then that's time well spent. Okay? That email is great. It's worth your time to reply to. And make sure the reply to is your personal email. I'd also, you know, format it so it looks just like a personal email. Nothing fancy, no newsletter kind of formatting. Put your own personal signature that you would have in your email, like in Gmail. And I actually say in my email, hey, this is really me. And I actually want you to reply, this is extremely refreshing. I actually even say, this is a real email now. I keep the welcome email short because I want them to read it. I want them to be like, oh, this is actually a personal email from the founder of the company. And I send this email to anybody who signs up to Webinar Ninja in this example, even if they haven't paid us yet, just a free trial. And that question I ask, what were you looking to achieve? Well, that lets me know how I can improve the product. It lets me know why they signed up and also how I can help them get a win quickly. They say to me I was looking to sign up so I can start running some automated webinars. My reply would be like, fantastic. Let me show you how to do that and get you started. Let's set up your first automated webinar together. Here are the steps that ensures they're using my product and therefore they're going to get an roi and therefore they'll continue to be a customer. That's a win, that's time well spent. And that's a welcome email that actually does something for you instead of just some generic thing that you send out because you have to. The other thing is that by asking a question, you elicit a Reply. When somebody replies to an email, this tells email providers that this is not spam, this is not promotional. And therefore your emails from you and your company are going to start coming into their inbox and on their promotions tab. It's going to increase your open rates, it's going to lower your bounce rates. It's going to make your email marketing provider understand that, hey, the emails you're sending are of benefit and are not spam. This is especially important with the first email they get from you. It sets the trend and it also sets the mood, sets the precedent, sets the expectation. Hey, this company's different. They're actually trying to help me out. They're actually asking me questions and replying to me, not getting some automated message. I'm not getting a bot. Yes, we want to scale our business and we want to use automation to help scale. But some things are worth not scaling, like getting a win for your customer really early on with that welcome email so you can have them as a customer for life. Even if you can't help everybody out with a reply by having that email and saying, hey, reply to me. I'd love to see if me and my team can help out. And then they say, hey, I need help with this. And you can say, great, we could definitely help with that. I've CCed my customer success manager. She's going to help you and walk you through it. Welcome again and I'm so happy. We're going to get you started really quickly and that's it. Somebody else can handle it from there if I have a bit of time. I also like to throw in a little personalization when I reply. That's when I reply to the reply because I have their email address now. I know the URL. Sometimes their email address will say like, John from PizzaParty.com right. So I'll check out PizzaParty.com, check out the website, be like, oh, I really like the homepage or that video they have on the homepage is really cool or their about page is really creative. So I'll mention that in my reply. Hey, John, so pumped to have you. Thanks for replying to me. By the way, I love the video you have on pizzaparty.com it was really funny. Let me help you out with your questions. Wow, that's gonna change the world. That's gonna make their day. Wow. The founder of this company actually checked out my website, watched the video and took the time to mention it. How many companies do you know right now that you pay every month? Every year, every so often that does that. Very few or maybe none of them do that. So you're gonna stand out from the get go, and people are gonna fall in love with what you provide. Not only a great product, but a great experience. Ugh.
Could this vintage store be any cuter?
Right.
And the best part, they accept Discover. Except Discover in a little place like this? I don't think so, Jennifer. Oh, yeah, huh? Discover's accepted where I like to shop. Come on, baby. Get with the times.
Right? So we shouldn't get the parachute pants.
These are making a comeback, I think.

Of this episode, I said, try to make this as personal as possible. It's okay if you write a quick email and after that first reply, you don't have to say, you know, hi, John, again and again. Because with friends, you don't do that. You just say hi the first time and then the reply, you just go right into the conversation. And this is gonna save you some time, especially if you're applying on your phone. Another thing I do is that in my email signature, my personal email signature, I have a little line that says, see typos. They keep me humble. And it just kind of frees me of the burden of worrying about typos. I am the typo king. I make tons of typos. I like to say, because my brain is moving faster than my actual fingers. So I skip words, I make mistakes, I make spelling mistakes. It's not a total disaster. It's comprehensible. But there may be a typo to it in my emails. And that in the signature kind of frees me up, and it also allows it to be, again, personal. If there's a couple typos, they know that you're actually writing it. Now, this is not some automation script that's like highly, highly intelligent. So a reply is better than no reply or worrying about typos that you reply late. Speaking about replying. The fact that you're applying is huge. So even if you don't reply instantly, if you're even a day or two late, it's totally okay because they get it, you're busy, you're running a company, and as long as there's communication, they will appreciate it. Well, there you have it, guys. There's my advice to creating the perfect welcome email for your customers. Capitalize on this opportunity. You only have one chance to make a good first impression. Make it count. Thanks again for listening to the $100 MBA show. So if you have a welcome email, don't worry about changing it up. It's okay to change it up. That's the beauty of technology. You can edit things, you can change things, you can improve upon things. If your question is not resonating, people are not replying to it. Change up the question totally. Okay. All right, check you in tomorrow's episode Free Ride Friday. I'll see you then. Take care. Of.
