And in today's lesson you will learn five tips to getting work done on a plane. I do my fair share of traveling and sometimes I'm on a plane for 15 hours at a time. No matter how long your flight is for business, the time you have on a plane is actually gold. It's one of the best times to get some things done. A lot of people just write it off because hey, maybe there's no wi fi on the plane or the WI fi that they have is kind of weak or it's too expensive. But in today's lesson, I'm going to give you five tips about getting work done even without wifi on a plane. One of the best things about being on a plane is that it's distraction free. People can't reach you, so your focus is cranked up a notch. But planes are not always comfortable. They can be noisy. And if you go into a flight, especially a long one, without a game plan, you're asking for trouble. So in today's lesson, I'm going to give you my top five tips to make your next plane ride as productive as possible. Let's get into it. Let's get down to business. How many times have you had a flight that was coming up and you said to yourself, man, I'm going to get so much done on that flight. It's 10 hours long, it's 7 hours long, it's 5 hours long, I'm going to kill my to do list and you get off the fly and nothing gets done. I'm going to guess this has happened often because this has happened to me before in the past, plenty of times. And it's because you need a game plan. A game plan that actually works, that's actually practical. See, working on a plane is like the closest thing to working in space. It's a different environment. You just can't do the same things or get the same things done as you do on earth on ground. So in today's lesson, I want to give you those five killer tips to make sure you get those things done to really make a dent on your to do list. Tip number one is that you want to spend at least one hour before your flight to plan what you're going to get done on the flight. Now, this can be done the day before. It can even be done the hour before you board in a lounge or in the gate. But you want to make sure that you have WI fi available, even if you're tethering from your phone or doing this on your phone. Now, when it comes to the planning, I really recommend you just do the things that are on your to do list. You don't have to create things to do for the plane, things that you want to get done anyway, things that you would have gotten done if you weren't traveling in the next, you know, x amount of hours, you're going to look at that list and say, hey, what are the things on this list that don't require Internet? Or I can get the information from the Internet while I'm here and then I can use it offline. For example, maybe on my to do list it says, write a blog post. Now, I may need the Internet to do a bit of research. So let me do some research before I get on the flight, get all that information I need, and then write the blog post with the information I have already. That can include like, sourcing the image for the blog post. Let's say, for example, is reply to emails or reply to messages in your Project management software from your team like Basecamp or Slack. You can go in offline mode and draft your responses in a text doc. Or if you're using a mail client, you can respond to the emails and they'll go to your outbox. And then once you have a connection, they'll all get sent. So you have to think ahead. What are things I can do without Internet? What are things I can do on the plane? Now, I would make sure in the planning that you're not like planning to work the whole time. It's very uncomfortable to work for 10 hours straight on an airplane. You need to get up, you need to stand, you need to move around. So I recommend that maximum you work 30 to 40% of the time on the plane. So if your plane ride is 10 hours, then 4 hours of work is plenty. Especially when you're focused and you're doing things that were pre planned. You want to make sure that when you arrive that you had time to, you know, grab a bite to eat, to rest, maybe even catch a movie. All right, so that was step number one. Pre plan. Before you get on the flight, spend an hour to plan your agenda for the airplane. Number two, it's a whole lot more efficient to use a laptop. A lot of people get on a plane and they think, oh, I can get all my work done on my phone or on my iPad or tablet. It's just so much easier with a mouse. And being able to right click. This is going to cut down on the frustration, is also going to allow you to be more productive. I've tried both ways and I highly recommend using a laptop. Plus, with a laptop, for most people, you're going to get a lot of battery power and you're not going to drain your phone that you may need when you land at your destination. Tip number five, if you're traveling with somebody, a coworker, a partner in life, your boss, whatever it is, let them know about your planned time for work. You have to make sure they're on board. Say, hey, I'm going to be working about half the time I'm going to be on this flight. So I don't want to, you know, offend you in any way. But I'll be plugging in and be working and for the most part they'll be okay with that. You know, they'll be like, hey, cool, no problem. But it's important for you to give them a heads up so you're not feeling like, hey, I'm sorry, I'm not listening to your stories. Here or joking around or joining you with a movie, they'll know that, hey, you got to get things done. And it's going to allow you to kind of relax and focus on what you need to focus on. Getting the other parties on board with your agenda is important. Tip number four, plug in. When I say plug in, I mean plug in some earphones in your ears. Earphones are great because a plane will be a bit noisy. The noise of the plane, of course, of course there's other passengers around. I highly recommend. If you're using Spotify for music, there's a playlist called Brain Food. It's a really good playlist for work. Allows you to concentrate, there's no words. And with Spotify Premium, you can allow yourself to download a playlist so it's available even when you're offline. Earphones are a message to yourself that you need to concentrate and focus. It also allows time to kind of go by while you're working quickly. Tip number five, and this one's a big one, even though it's a simple one. Avoid an aisle seat. If you got to get work done, the best seat to be in is a window seat. It's the quietest. It isolates you from distractions. An aisle is a highway on a plane, right? There's people coming up and down, drink carts, crawling babies, all that kind of stuff. Distraction city, right? If you plan ahead, you can choose your actual seat and go with a window seat. Better yet, if you can go with a window exit seat. I love exit seats because you get the extra leg room. I'm a tall guy, but especially if you're working and you stretch your legs, you can be able to kind of move around and do a bit of calisthenics to get the blood flowing. Also, you often have to pay a little extra for that exit seat. But it's well worth it because a lot of people don't pay extra. And you'll find that those seats next to you are empty, giving you even more seclusion, privacy and a noise free environment.

A plane is a great place to get work done if you plan it right. A couple of bonus tips make sure your laptop is fully charged before you get on the plane. Ideally, you're not going to have to put in any power from your seat and it's a great contingency just in case, you know the plug or the port that is supposed to be at the seat is not working. This has happened to me on several occasions. Another bonus tip is don't forget about analog Use a paper and pen. Bring a notebook and pen on the plane. It might be easier to jot things down on a paper and pen as you're working with your laptop, as you're taking down notes and ideas and brainstorming. Planning is a great activity when you're on the plane. Planning meetings, planning a retreat, planning your goals and your aims and targets for the next six months. You don't even need your laptop with that. You can just have a paper and pen and go at it. Well, there you have it guys. I hope these five tips for getting work done on a plane have helped. Today's tips were for trips on a plane for business. If you're on a plane ride to go on a break, a vacation, a rest, you should not be working. It takes some time to even just unwind before you can get into vacation mode. So do yourself a favor and leave the laptop at home. If the intention of the trip is to relax, remember what your intentions are. If your intention is to go work, then you can get work done. But if the intention is to relax, then no mix in work when your whole aim is to take a break. All right, thank you so much for listening. I'll check you in tomorrow's episode Freeride Friday.
