I'm also the co founder of the Hundred Dollar mba, a couple of business training and community online and today's episode is a Q and A Wednesday episode. On our Q and A Wednesday episodes I answer a question from one of you, one of our listeners. If you have a question you want to ask just email me over at Omar MBA Net. Today's question is from Henry and Henry asks how do you get mentions and write ups on popular websites? Hey Omar, I'm a listener of the show for some time and notice that you get many write ups and mentions in popular websites like Inc. Florida, Forbes and entrepreneur.com. how do you make this happen? Are you building relationships on the side? Help a brother out? Thanks Henry. Thanks for the question Henry and I'll do my best to help you out in today's Q and A Wednesday's episode. All I can do to answer these questions is to be totally honest and share everything I know and hopefully these answers will be exactly what you need to hear to get going. Getting mentions on websites that get a lot of traffic like Forbes or Fast Company or Inc or the HuffPost or CNN or any of the major publications can give your business, your site, your podcast, your YouTube channel a boost. It gives you exposure, gives you credibility, and a regular injection of it can really help sustain your marketability and your brand. Now, when I saw this question, I actually was surprised because I, I'm actually not very good at this. Like, I'm not very good at doing the right things to build the relationships with the people that write these articles. But there are some things that we do at the Hundred Dollar MBA and Webinar Ninja that does help us get exposure and be on the radar for those who are writing these articles. We're going to start with the basics and then go from there. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. So how do you get mentions in publications on websites that get a lot of traffic? Well, I, I have to start here and it may not be something that you want to hear, but it's the truth. And that's really where 90% of all my mentions and all the articles about me or the show or a business come from. If you want people to take notice and to write about you, you have to create noteworthy work. I know that sounds very simple, but you have to actually have something good for people to write about. You have to have a good product, a good business, a good show, a good blog, something that really resonates with people, something that you really put effort into it. Now, we're by no means perfect. We have a lot of room for improvement. But one of the things we've done well with the Hundred Dollar MBA show, for example, is strive to improve day in and day out with the show. We're over 1200 episodes in, we've been doing this for five years. And the consistency of the show is part of its success, is just keep going at it, getting enough repetitions to keep improving. And if you're around for long enough and people will notice that you've been around for a while, good work gets shared and it will eventually get to the people that are writing about your topic. Even though our show was a success when it first launched and it was very popular on itunes, we didn't get any write ups for maybe six months or so. And the best thing we did is just focus on the work, focus on what we were doing. People talk. So when somebody enjoys your product, when somebody enjoys your website, your show on YouTube, they're going to share it with other people, they're going to talk about on social media and that's going to get picked up. Somebody's going to write on Twitter. My favorite business podcast is the Hundred Dollar mba. Show those writers that write these articles on Forbes on Inc. They're searching social for these types of mentions. Writing favorite podcasts, favorite business podcast. If your website is in a niche and when I search for it on Google, you're on the first page. It's gonna be easy to be found. People are gonna find your site easily. But again, it goes back to having something that's good, that's noteworthy. Cause when they do find you and go to your website or go check out your work, you gotta make sure that you're ready for them, that you actually give them something that is good and excellent and professional. So they can say, hey, this is legit. I'm gonna include it as an example, as a mention, as something in my article. So creating great work is where you start. And just commit to that. Commit to that for as long as it takes. For as long as you're doing it. The second thing is just purely being helpful and building relationships. So when you meet people at conferences, when you meet people online, you meet people on social. When you meet people on a phone call or email introduction, be as helpful as possible. These people know other people. Successful people know successful people. The people that you are meeting at conferences and speaking to and building relationships, they have the ear of a lot of these writers. Some of them are writers. A lot of people don't realize the people that write for Forbes and Inc. And Entrepreneur magazine and Yahoo News and cnn, they're just columnists. They're like regular people like you and I, they have businesses and day jobs, but they do this on the side. And they're a fan, just like you're a fan of other people's work. So maybe you're not going to build a relationship directly with a writer. But. But those who know writers, those who know people that are tastemakers and curate this information on sites like this, will know people that you're building relationships. One degree of separation. So by being helpful, by being somebody that is willing to meet new people, building relationships, this goes a long way. So this stuff kind of happens by itself. We've never hired a PR firm or somebody to kind of write to these publications about our work. Honestly, maybe we should, but we just don't have the time to do it or really haven't worked out how to do it. So instead what we have been doing is just focusing on creating grid work, building the relationships along the way, being as helpful as possible to not only our Customers, but our network and the people that we're meeting now, there is something that I do that is helpful, that does really move the needle and really make a difference. When you do get mentioned in any of these publications, big or small, any website, any blog, make sure you send him out a tweet or an email or something where he says, hey, thanks for the mention. Really, I'm honored to be a part of your article. Let me know if I can be of help at any time. A lot of people that get mentioned in articles ignore the writer. They don't even acknowledge that they wrote that article for them or included them in the article. I do this every single time. And all these writers know each other. They're in the same industry. And you better believe they ask each other. Hey, I'm writing a post about podcasting. What are your favorite podcasters? Do you know any good podcasters I can interview and include? You're going to be top of mind because, hey, hey, that person really reached out to me and built some sort of relationship with me. You should check out Omar. I included him in one of my articles and he's super helpful. Seize the opportunity to be helpful. As soon as somebody mentions you, big or small, even if someone just mentions you on social, make it a point to thank them and reach out to them and ask them how can you help them in any way. Now, one of the most powerful things you can do is build an audience. We talk about this all the time, but not just for the sake of building an audience of great leads so you can sell products and services to them. Having an audience is power. You have the attention of so many people, whether you have a big YouTube channel or a big email list or a blog or podcast. The point here is that the writer also understands that they want their article to be popular. They want people to spread it. So if they mention you, they're hoping that you can share it with your audience too, to spread the message about the article, to get it more exposure. So the bigger the audience, the more they're going to go after and write about you. Another thing you can do is link back to these articles that you do get mentioned on. So maybe on your about page or something like that, these sites will be notified. They get pings when they know, hey, this site is, you know, linking back to one of your articles and they'll be like, hey, cool, this person is helping us out. Top of mind. If they do this, then the next time I mention, they'll do it again. So, hey, these people are helping us with backlinks and also helping drive traffic to our site. These are just little things you can do. Remember, these are individuals writing these articles. They're just normal people. They're not famous, they're not celebrities, and you can easily build relationships with them in a helpful way.

I can only share my personal experience and that's just working hard on your craft, really working hard on creating something noteworthy, building relationships along the way, being helpful along the way. Before I go, I want to leave you with this. It's great to get mentioned in one of these big websites and it does give you a boost, but it doesn't last forever. Kind of helps your business out for a couple of days and then you're back to trying to help your business market itself on its own. Right? So I want to say that it's not a silver bullet. It's a nice to have, but it's not going to make or break your business. We've been mentioned several times on the homepage of these sites for and it doesn't really move the needle tremendously where like you're going to become a millionaire overnight. No. Gives you some really good exposure, some good traffic, maybe some extra sales. And it's a nice to have, it's nice to be recognized, but your business is not going to do or die based on it. Thank you so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. I'll see you then. Take care.
