Welcome to the $100 MBA show value packed lessons every day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the $100 MBA, a complete business training and community online. And in today's episode you will learn how to get your team on board with your vision. As the leader of your business, your company, it's your responsibility to make sure everybody on your team, no matter how big or small, understands what you're trying to achieve, where you're trying to go. Your vision for the company needs to be so clear that they can tell other people easily and simply what your vision is. Part of that is making sure that you simplify that message, simplify that vision as simple as possible. And the first step of that is understanding what your vision is. You know, really deciding by yourself as a leader in your leadership team what you're trying to do with your business. And you're going to boil it down to a very simple vision statement. And then after that, your job is to make sure that this statement is understood and is clear to everybody on your team. But it's not enough for just you to understand and communicate this to your team once. You need to constantly communicate this to them. Just like motivation and showering, you should be doing it regularly. So we get into all of this, a lesson that's so important for us as a business. Because if you don't know where you're going, if you don't have a vision that's clear, your team's gonna be confused. They're not gonna understand the why. Why are we doing this? What's the point? What are we working towards nailing? This is so important. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. One of the hardest parts when it comes to founders, business owners, nailing their vision is they don't think big enough. Let me use an example for today's lesson. Let's say I have a software company and my company sells chat software. So you could chat with your customers for customer support and sales and all that kind of stuff. Many founders, when they have a product, their vision is just not big enough, nor is it clear enough. You could be big and clear and precise all at the same time. Let me give you an example. Most people, when they come up with a vision for a company like this, they say, provide a great product to help our customers, serve their customers. Sounds good, right? But it's sort of a given. Of course your product should be great. Of course it should be serving their customers because that's what the product's all about. It's chat software. This is something that you should be doing every day. It's not something you should be working towards. It's not a vision. A vision is more like the number one way for companies to acquire and serve their customers. You want to be the market leader. You want to be able to be the first name that everybody thinks about when it comes to customer service. Chat software. We're just getting started here. This is a good vision, but we can refine it even more. What makes you number one? Well, we're easy to use, say the most user friendly chat software on the market. You could still be number one, but it allows you to focus on how you're going to be number one. This allows your team to understand what your focus is. The vision is to be number one. But of course how we're going to get There, well, we're going to be the easiest product to use. That's the focus for the whole team. It's going to be easy to speak to our customer support. It's going to be easy to use the app, it's going to be easy to buy the app. So every department, sales, engineering, customer service, they are all on board with this vision. They see their role. It's hard for somebody to buy into a vision if they can't see how they can contribute to it. So by being specific, it allows people to understand, hey, this, this is how you're going to help everybody on the team achieve our common goal, our common vision. Now you see how I just explained that to you. You need to do the same with your team, with your product. You need to take the time to do this regularly, but you need to do at least once at the start to totally explain it. Of course you're going to want to do this again and again because you're going to get new hires. But let's start with that first meeting. You want to have a all hands meeting. You're going to have this maybe at a team retreat, maybe you're going to have it at an offsite location. Maybe you're going to have it just a video call because, hey, you gotta get this done, you gotta nail it. And you as a leader have to present this vision to them. My advice, keep it as short as possible, under 10 minutes. People want to understand what you're saying, but at the same time, the longer you go, it's gonna be hard for them to retain it. Remember, this is something that is just for you to get started. Your vision's gonna shift as you grow as a business every year, your vision might start to grow a little bit, change a little bit as you begin to grow and change. So your first step in delivering this sort of presentation is to nail your statement, what's the vision for the company? What do you want to achieve? What do you want to be known for and how will you be known for it? If you want to be the number one chat software, for example, how? Well, we want to be the most user friendly. That's what we're going to be known for. This is what our direction is going to be. Great. Write that down and build your presentation around it. When I say presentation, it's basically making it clear to people what this means to them, what it means for their job, for their role. For every department in your business, give them examples of what you want to work on to achieve that goal in each Department. Now, there's no point in doing all of this if you're not convinced that this is possible. You need to make sure that you're convinced. Because if you don't say this with conviction, with a sense of passion and belief, they're not going to believe it. They're going to read it in your face that you don't buy it. Make sure that you convince yourself first. And then when you give your presentation, you don't have to be so over the top, but you have to be genuine. It has to come from the heart. This is your baby, after all. You're all building this together. And it's a lot easier for you to explain when you simplify that vision. Now, once you give that presentation, it's not over. You need to remind your team on a constant basis of this vision while we are doing this. So in this example, again, I say, for example, with the software, the chat software, every time we release a new update every month, I explain to the team, hey, great job. We've released this feature this month. Customers just got the email tie it back to the vision. This is why this feature is important, because it allows us to get closer to our vision, which is 1, 2, 3, 4. We got to reiterate it. Thanks, team, for staying on course and allowing our vision to start. Take light to start forming. Yes, you gave that presentation, but you need to regularly remind them of it so they stay on track. Yes, I get it now. I understand. I, I see this applied in real life. So every month they get a reminder. When you're discussing new features, when you're discussing new plans, when you're talking about SOPs, standard operating procedures, when you're trying to help your customer service team answer questions, refer how this relates to the vision. Seek opportunities to do this because we all need reminders. One of the best examples I can give is if you ever played sports or organized sports, when you were a kid in school or in little league or whatever it is, your coach would constantly remind you that, hey, we want to win the championship. That's the vision. That's what we want to do. And every time we did something little towards that, he would remind me of this. My coach at least, right? My coach used to say, hey, we're doing these sprints, we're doing these conditioning workouts, so when it comes game time, we're ready, we're prepared, we're better than the competition, so we can get that win, so we can get closer to that championship. So in the moment, I have that motivation to do that, you know, exercise that sprint. I'm reminded by the meaning of it. I'm reminded by why we're doing this. And in our business, our employees are reminded why they're working for us. Why should they work for you other than another company? Because of that vision, because they feel like they're part of something greater than themselves. Sometimes we forget our employees. Our teammates can work anywhere. There's so much choice out there, especially if they're talented, they got tons of choices and they're probably headhunted and you don't even know about it. So why do they stay with you? Yeah, maybe you pay them well and they have good benefits, but they probably like working for you because of the meaning behind your company, why you're doing what you're doing. That vision is critical when it comes to that. Another way to reiterate the vision and make sure it's top of mind is have a statement you always refer to. So for example, in this chat software example, if the vision is to be the most user friendly chat software out there, every time you have a discussion, every time you're working on a project, every time you're introducing a new feature, you ask your team, hey, how does this help us become the most user friendly chat software out there? And if there is no answer for it, then we say, no, we don't do that. We only focus on the things that reinforce our vision. And this allows your team to understand this vision is real. This is not something that's just a bunch of words or a bunch of rah rah things that management say. It's something that we live by, making it sort of a rule of thumb, making it a condition for action. We only take action if it helps our vision. Let me tell you about Intuit QuickBooks. When I was starting out my business, I remember sitting at my desk late at night, not working on my business, but cleaning up numbers, tracking and reconciling payments and wondering how this became my life. Oh, could this vintage store be any cuter?
Right. And the best part?
They accept Discover. Except Discover in a little place like this? I don't think so. Jennifer.
Oh, yeah.
Huh? Discover's accepted where I like to shop. Come on, baby.
Get with the times.
Right. So we shouldn't get the parachute pants. These are making a comeback, I think.
Discover is accepted at 99% of places.

The February 2025 Nielsen report. Selling your vision to your team is the most important sales exercise you're ever going to do in your business. You need to be able to convince your team first before you convince anybody else. They're the people that have a vested interest in the success of the company. If you can do this successfully, then you can easily convince customers. Because when people buy your product or service, they're not only buying for now. They want to know that you're going to be around forever. You're going to be around for the long term, and that you continue to improve. So make sure you communicate this vision clearly and regularly with your team. Thank you so much for listening to the $100 MBA show. Today's episode's not over though. It's Free Ride Friday.
