Welcome to the $100 MBA show, the podcast that keeps on giving every day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the $100 MBA, a complete business training and community online. And in today's lesson you will learn how to do a negativity detox for you and your business. I know this may sound obvious, but negativity is horrible for you and your business. Of course it's a no brainer, but if you're unaware of the negative forces that are around you that are influencing you and your business and your team, you're going to be impacted by that negativity. And it's going to impact your business and your results. So in today's episode, I'm going to challenge you to make some changes. In the next 30 days. We're going to make some changes that are going to ensure that you are not being exposed to to harmful negativity. Here's the reality. When you're exposed to negativity, it affects how you feel. And if you don't feel good, you don't do good. You don't get the things you need to get done. It affects your productivity, it affects your efficiency as well as your clarity in making decisions. It might be subtle at times, but it's definitely affecting you and your team. I'll also talk about how to make sure you implement these practices in your culture. This is not a woo woo episode. This is a practical exercise that you're going to do that's going to help your business. We're going to talk about some of the things that you can do, small and big, to positively impact your business. What we watch, what we listen to, who we speak to, who we surround ourselves with, they all affect us. And as a leader of your business, you need to be hypersensitive to this because it cascades to the rest of the team. All right, we got a lot to cover, so let's get down to business. The late Steve Jobs, the co founder of Apple, was known for something called the reality distortion field. This is explained in detail in Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs. Now, the reality distortion field is basically Steve Jobs creating his own reality. He will shun away anything that will affect what he wants the truth to be. Now of course this is not always healthy and it's somewhat extreme, but part of that philosophy that we can learn from is that Steve Jobs was vigilant about what things he was exposed to. He controlled who he spoke to, what he watched, what he listened to, what he ate. Everything he felt influenced who he was as a person and as an entrepreneur. And many people close to him believe this is one of the main reasons why he was so successful with Apple. He, he didn't listen to hate, he didn't listen to badmouthing, bad reviews. He just lived in his own bubble, so to speak. Now again, there's a lot of negative things that come with this that he did, but what we're gonna take is the best part of that idea is being aware that other things around us will affect us, will affect the way we feel, the way we think and the way we make decisions. So we gotta be very selective about what we surround ourselves with. So let's start with, with what you're going to do for the next 30 days to have a negativity detox. We're going to start with the most impactful things you can do and then we're going to get into the more subtle things. Jim Rohn is known for many things. He's like the father of motivational speaking and personal development. But he has a very famous quote, probably the quote he's most known for, and that's you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Who you spend most time with, who you surround yourself with, will greatly impact how you feel and what you achieve. You gotta take a look at who's around you, who around you most of the time is just talking negatively about people, hating on people, making fun of people. How many people that you are surrounded with on a regular basis uplift you, make you feel pumped, motivated, and how many of them kind of put you in a slump. Changing the people you spend your time with is, is going to have a great impact. This is why many studies have shown that who your partner in life with, your husband, your wife, your partner has a great impact on your success in life. If both of you are supporting each other, motivating each other, and are positive, you're going to have a positive life. There's many examples of this, like Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla. And your partner is the person you spend the most time with most of the time. Right. So. So if you are good in the area, congratulations. If for some reason you're not, you need to make this clear to your partner. Say this is not an attack, this is not a commentary who you are. But I'm trying to try this experiment for 30 days. Are you on board? Do you want to be positive with me for the next 30 days? I'm trying to reduce all negativity around me. I'm going to say how it affects me and my business. You got to get the person on board you spend the most time with. That's the ideal situation. Let's hope for that that that works out. If you're in a situation where maybe you're not in a super committed, then taking some time away or minimal time away is not going to hurt anybody. Of course this is if they are a negative force. Second, family, friends, we're talking about extended family, people that you see normally, friends you see regularly. In the next 30 days. I want you to spend as much time as possible, the most positive members of those groups, family and friends. The way to ensure that is right now in their calendar. Any kind of free time you have the next month, whether it's the weekend or evenings, lock in some appointments, lock in some, you know, double dates, some movie nights, whatever it is. That way, you know for sure in the next 30 days, you'll be spending your recreational time with positive people, with people that uplift you, that are positive, that are supportive, that don't talk behind people's backs, all that kind of stuff. So this is going to make the most impact. This is like half the battle of people you spend your time with the most. Number two, media, and this includes social media. I want you to go through all your social media, everybody that you follow on Twitter, all the friends on your Facebook page or Facebook profile, I should say. And on Facebook, you can mute them. You can say, I don't want to have these people in my feed. And you know, the people that constantly post negative things, things that bring you down, whether they're political, whether they're just hateful, maybe they're just ranting. Anything that doesn't make you feel good, that's not positive, that's not informative in a positive way. So what you want to do is do that in Facebook. You want to do it on Twitter. You can unfollow somebody, you can follow them back later on. But I recently did that with some people that I just felt, you know what, I really respect them as an entrepreneur and all that stuff, but every time I look at their latest posts on Twitter, it's just negative. It's just hating on somebody's idea or somebody's invention. No thanks. Unfollow. I want to protect my mind, protect my mood. Like a fortress. I can't let things go in that are going to affect me. When it comes to the news or tv. Take a break for a month. The world will go on without you. Trust me. If that makes you feel down, cut it off for 30 days. Let's see what happens. Anything that you read, whether it's negative comments on Twitter or on YouTube videos or Reddit threads, whatever it is, make sure you're aware of those mediums and that you block those off. You do not entertain yourself with that stuff for 30 days. We want to see the difference. Just give it a shot. Let's move to the business. Now, as a leader, your business, you need to make sure this is clear to everybody, whether you're doing an all hands meeting or you're making a message on your message board or whatever it is that you do to communicate, you know, staff wide, company wide messages, make it super clear that it's a top priority for everybody in the company. This is like a rule, a value to be respectful to each other, to be positive and to be inclusive. I want to be clear here, and sometimes I think communicating this on video verbally is better. There's nothing wrong with highlighting an issue, a problem, something that you have to fix in your business. You know, an employee might be saying, hey, this is something that's not right, something we need to fix, that is fine, that's healthy, and we should do that and make that clear. But what you gotta make just as clear is how you deliver that criticism. You can't deliver that criticism in any way you want. That's just not acceptable. Why? Because we are dealing with other human beings, emotions. If one teammate decides to say, hey, that is not a good thing, that's a bad way to do something. You gotta be tactful, you gotta be respectful. And the best way to, to do this is to always be solution oriented. And we talk about this in our own company values that we're always solution oriented. So we see a problem, we say, hey, this is an issue that I see that we're doing totally understand. We all have problems, we all kind of have issues in our own businesses, but you gotta immediately have a solution or have a suggestion or be open, be like, hey, I'm not really sure how we can fix this, but I want to solve this. How can we solve this? Is there a way we can brainstorm together, see how that's positive, see how that's actually working towards a solution rather than, that's stupid. I don't like it. Why are we doing it this way? How we address problems is a big part of morale in your company. People want to feel that they're respected. And often people will point to things that other people have built, other people have worked on and say, hey, I spent months on that. And you're just, you know, poo pooing all over it. The concerns, the issues could be valid, but how you deliver the criticism is just as important. So it's your job as a leader to lead by example. When you want to point out an issue, you want to make sure you're solution oriented and that you're being respectful. Show people how it's done. And remember, if somebody does not do this is not positive, is not being respectful. You need to address it just in time. You don't have to do it in front of everybody. But after the all hands meeting later on on a one on one call, on a one on one message, hey, notice so and so happened. I just want to give some feedback. I think it would be better if you did xyz. You delivered it in this way. You got to do it just in time because if you let it go, that person is just going to think it's acceptable and you can't just let it go. These are the values. This is the energy that your company is going to be working off and it affects everybody. One of the great concepts in acting and in improv is the concept of yes and and this idea is someone will give an idea, they'll say something and if you want to say something yourself, even if it's contradictory, you don't say no or but or that's a horrible idea. You say yes and yes meaning that that's a valid concern or valid idea and I want to add to it. So having a yes and culture in your company is going to keep things positive and keep them moving. Listen, you want to make sure everybody is happy to work for your company. Look forward to going to work every day, not dreading working with the others or not dreading voicing their opinion because they might get shot down. Stay positive and make sure you lead by example. So I want you to make sure you address this in your next 30 days with your company because it's going to affect everything around you and how you work and how your company produces results.

To wrap up today's episode. You need to be vigilant about everything that you're exposed to. When I jumped to full time entrepreneurship, I moved to a new city, I was in a new apartment, I had new friends and new relationships and I literally created a bubble for myself to give me the best chance to succeed. You don't have to do a drastic move like this, but you need to be aware of what does affect you and do the exercises I prescribed for you today. Implement the things I mentioned into your business. Make it clear that this is a priority. Show them how to give feedback in a positive way and to be respectful and use a yes and method.
