I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the Hundred Dollar mba, a complete business training and community online and today's episode is a must Read episode On our Must Read Episodes. I share with you a book that I've read that has influenced me as an entrepreneur, has helped me in some way. I share with you its insights, its takeaways and why you should read it too. And today's must read is Discipline Equals Freedom by Jack O' Jocko is a former U.S. navy SEAL and his whole business is built around this concept. How you can use discipline, how you can use the skills that you learn as a Navy seal, in business, in leadership. He's a New York Times best selling author and this book caught my eye because of the reviews and because of the title. This is a must read, a must have book and I think it's a great book to have as a reference when you need a kick in the pants. He talks about how to build the skills and the habits to be a well oiled machine, a disciplined entrepreneur and really just a disciplined human being. And how this can create freedom in your life, whether it's in your health, in your relationships, in your business. I'll get into some of my favorite takeaways from this book, the overall reason why you should pick it up, and also share some things that gave me some pause and had me thinking for a while. We get into all that in today's must read episode. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. Before I get into my takeaways with this book, Discipline Equals Freedom by Jocko Willink, I want to mention that it's really worth buying this book in hardcover. I usually buy books either on Kindle or an audio version on Audible. It's just the way I like to consume books. It's easy to travel with a Kindle. You can, you know, put thousands of books in your Kindle. But this book is worth having because it's a, it's a beautiful book. It's all black and the actual pages are black and the print is white and they got some really nice big images, some motivational quotes. It's really worth having as a hardcover. So I'd recommend, if you order this book, to get it in hardcover, if you know a little bit about the author. Jocko. He's a really no nonsense kind of guy. He kind of shot to fame, got famous because of his great books, one of them being Extreme Leadership, the other Extreme Ownership. But he's also on very big podcasts like the Joe Rogan show and the Tim Ferriss show. And his whole bread and butter is applying the no nonsense practical training that he learned as a Navy SEAL to life, to business, to getting things done. The first half of the book focuses on philosophy, about all the excuses we make for ourselves when we don't get things done, when we don't have discipline. Jocko provides you with motivation, with techniques to persevere through tough times, through challenges in life, and also how to change the way you feel about yourself, which is very interesting that he gets into that. The second half of the book turns that philosophy into practice, giving you practical tips on how to move forward and be more disciplined in your day to day. It talks a lot about the value of fitness and nutrition as well as, you know, having a schedule throughout your day. So what did I love about this book? First of all, it's very straightforward, right? It's in your face, there's no fluff, every page really goes straight for the jugular, right? It doesn't kind of work up to the point and elaborate. A lot of these self help Books really could be a blog post, right? But he really makes it concise and he goes straight for the information you need is really refreshing and it's almost like blunt honesty that you need to hear in this type of topic. He has this really good balance of tough love while giving you the content you need. He gives a lot of examples from his life as well. And. And it really motivates you, really shows you, hey, what's possible. And that's kind of the second thing I love about the book. It's very motivational. Sometimes we need a kick in the pants. We need a push. We need somebody to tell us, you know, you can do this. Not every day you're going to be springing into action, feeling motivated. Sometimes you're going to feel less motivated. And this is where this book comes in handy, where you can just pull it off your shelf and read a couple pages and feel like, I'm ready for the day, I'm ready to go for it. There's nothing wrong with that. Self motivating yourself with these tools is what's going to get you over the tough days. I would say probably the first half of this book is probably one of the most motivational books I've read. And I say this with all positivity, with all praise. It's the real motivation. It really helps you keep your eye on the prize and really understand your values that you really need to focus on discipline. So again, even if you just buy this book to kick yourself in the pants once in a while when you need it, read a few pages, it's well worth it. The other thing I love about this book is how honest, how transparent Jocko is. In this book, he gives countless examples of his own life. He's very honest about himself, his own weaknesses and what he struggles with and how he overcomes them. There's a lot of power in sharing somebody's journey, sharing your journey. And he shares his journey of going through those struggles and persevering. It gives you a blueprint, almost like an example of, hey, if I'm struggling, if I need to persevere, I'm not alone here. There's somebody else who went through it and I can get through it just like he did. But the meat of this book is all about how you can use discipline. Scheduling priorities to do lists, all these things to your advantage, to have freedom, to have freedom in your life, to do what you want to do. This reminds me of a yearly planning technique that I learned from my mentor, my coach, Dan Martel, where He actually plans out the whole year in his calendar. Everything is booked out. And a lot of people are like, wow, that's really regimented. It seems like you don't have freedom. It's the exact opposite. You have immense freedom when you do that. Why? Because you get to say how you spend your time a year in advance. You say, I care about this, this, and this I'm making time for. I care about my fitness. I care about taking vacations with my family. I care about travel. I care about spending time to read. I have some time allotted for thinking. I have time allotted for family and friends. Whatever it is, it's in the calendar now. It's a priority. And then everything else I can fit in, right? So I first prioritize what's important to me, my business, my health. And then anybody says, hey, can you help me do this or do you want to do that? I can check my calendar and say, hey, do I have time after all the important things I need to get done for me and my growth and my business are done. Yes, there's a spot. No, sorry, there isn't. You actually have more freedom by scheduling things in a advance and prioritizing what's important to you before you start giving out your calendar and your time. Your biggest asset is your time to people, willy nilly. Right? So this is really, really the heart of this book is when you have discipline over your time and your energy, you have so much more freedom over your success in your life. And he's a living example of that. Jocko's a living example of that. I have one small gripe about this book. It doesn't totally deter from the value of the book. It is totally valuable and it's definitely worth buying. Okay, this is why it's on a must episode. But I mentioned that the second half of the book, he talks about nutrition and fitness. The workouts he described are not very detailed. You're gonna need something else. You don't rely only on that to say, okay, I know exactly how I'm gonna work out, how I'm gonna eat and how I'm gonna do everything detailed to the tea. It's not very detailed. I'm sure you can check out other books for that reason. If you're into bodybuilding, I highly recommend Arnold Schwarzenegger's book, the Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding by Arnold Schwarzenegger. And that's very detailed. But he does emphasize the importance of these things, fitness and health, and kind of gives you a taste of what you can do. Same thing goes with nutrition, but it's all good. This book is fantastic for motivating you and getting you to understand the value of discipline in your life. Overall, I think this book actually can help you with your confidence. It's going to allow you to get some wins in your life to feel good about yourself and for them. That's why it's a must read. I think that he does an excellent job cultivating that in the book. He actually pushes you to get started, which is probably one of the most important things you need to do to get results to start doing things right. And he gives you that push you need. The title is Fulfilled Discipline Equals Freedom. He explains how that's true and how you can implement that in your life. So for that I gotta give it up. This is a good book. It got raving reviews on Amazon and for good reason.

It's a great book to have around because not every day you're going to feel pumped and ready to take on the world. You're going to have to reach for something that's going to give you motivation. It's a faster thing than going to YouTube, right? It's more effective in my opinion than searching for a motivational video or something like that.
