I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the Hundred Dollar mba, a complete business training and community online and today's episode is a must Read episode. On our Must Read Episodes, I share with you a book that I've read that has helped me, that has influenced me as an entrepreneur. I share with you some of its takeaways, its insights and why you should read it too. Today's must read is 12 rules for life by Jordan Peterson. Jordan Peterson is a well known author and this book is classified as a personal development book. But many of the things he covers can help you improve your business and and who you are as a leader of your business. And this is why I wanted to share with you this book. On a must read episode he goes through very simple rules that you can follow that can greatly enhance and improve your success rate in life and in business. And he backs these rules up with stories from history, philosophy, religion and of course science. And that's why it makes such a compelling read because it gets into the what and the how but also the why. You should follow these rules. So many golden nuggets I'm not going to be able to get through all 12 rules. I'm going to leave some for you to figure out on your own or find out on your own when you read the book. But I'll get into some of the ones that really had me thinking. Can't wait to get into this one. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. One of the things I love about history and books that incorporate stories from history is that it explains how things play out as human beings. And as they say, history repeats itself. It's because human nature is a real thing. So what happens when we don't do certain things or don't follow certain rules? What are the consequences? What are the benefits when we do follow those rules? That's what this book is all about. Some of these rules may seem overly simplistic, but he explains, hey, as simple as it sounds, it's incredibly effective. And let me share with you the first rule he shares in the book. And here it is. Rule number one. Stand up straight with your shoulders back. You might be thinking, what, like straighten your back? Are you serious? Yes. And he backs this up with incredible evidence how this can help you. This is a science called physiology, where basically you change the way you move your body and it changes your mind, it changes how you perform, it changes how people perceive you. There's so much that we don't know about how this thing that we have called our body can affect us in so many ways. He talks about how the weak, the poor, the stress throughout history have died first. They don't survive. And whether they are actually weak, somebody who has bad posture, who hunches over whether they're sitting or standing or how they carry themselves on the day to day basis, the world will perceive them as weak. They're more vulnerable of being taken advantage. They're more vulnerable of not getting what they want out of life. This is just human nature. This is the reality of the way the world works. People make a judgment based on what they see first before anything else. So if somebody sees somebody who's hunched over, who doesn't look confident, who doesn't have their back straight, that's not going into a situation believing in themselves. They're not going to believe in them. They're going to discount them, they're going to feel like they can be walked over. And unfortunately, that's just how it is. Some of us are not very conscious of the way we present ourselves to the world. And that's just because we might Think, hey, my work is my merit and what I can produce, really what matters. It doesn't matter what I look like or how I care myself. And you might think, hey, I live on the Internet. I do everything on the Internet. This is fine to a point. The world still is human to human. We still interact in some way, whether it's on a video call or seeing your image, or again at conferences or meetups or client meetings. This will hold you back. At some point. You can carry on not worrying about the way you're being presented to the world for a certain point, and it's going to hold you back. And what Jordan Peterson is simply saying is that just be conscious of the way you carry yourself. And the easiest thing you could do is just to be conscious of your posture. Are you standing up straight with your shoulders back? That alone creates the image of confidence, of reassurance, of health, of strength. And this goes for both, of course, men and women and in any profession. He also gets into how your physical state can change your mental and emotional state by keeping your back straight, keeping your shoulders back. It keeps you positive, it keeps you motivated. Some really encourage to even change your body. When you're feeling down, you're not feeling good. If you're feeling demotivated, you're feeling just in a rut. One of the best things you could do is go for a brisk walk with your back straight, shoulders back, taking in some fresh air, or at the very least, toss your desk chair aside and stand up. You can cause a reaction inside yourself to say, hey, let's change things up a bit. I love this rule because I personally have tried this earlier in my career. I didn't have such great posture in my early 20s. Yes, I played sports and I was active, but in the professional setting, I wasn't so confident. I was still green, I was still figuring out my career. And a lot of that was displayed in my posture. But then I made a conscious effort to keep my back straight when I'm standing, when I'm sitting, when I'm in public, when I'm in front of people. And that just became my posture all the time. It's helped me in so many ways, I can't tell you. This is why I implore you to try this and be conscious of this, even if you do have good posture right now. All right, let me get into another rule that really resonated with me, and that's rule number two. Treat yourself like someone you're responsible for helping. It's super helpful for you to See yourself as a different entity. I know that sounds strange, but if you were going to take care of somebody, if you were going to advise somebody, if you're going to give them, let's say, a regimen, how would you do that? You would give them advice, you'd write things down. You tell that person, you need to sleep more, you need to exercise more, you need to eat right. We're very good at telling other people what they should do and giving them advice and prescribing them things that can help them. So what he's saying here is you want to do that for yourself. You want to step back from yourself for a moment and treat yourself like somebody else, somebody that you know, what would you tell yourself to improve things, to change things, to solve problems that you're currently having to relieve stress. If you had a friend come to you and say, hey, I'm feeling stressed out. Work is really getting to me. My business is really high pressure, what should I do? You might advise them, hey, listen, it's not the end of the world. Why don't you just take a few hours off this afternoon? It's not going to kill the business, but it's going to recenter you and recharge you. Go for a swim, go for a walk, get a massage, enjoy a good movie, go to bed, start the next day, you're going to feel 100% better. That's what you would say to a friend. So tell that to yourself and implement and resist the urge to say, that's different. My situation's different. I'm not like my friend. No, give yourself the advice you'd give others. Here's another rule that I absolutely love. Rule number three. Make friends with people who want the best for you. The key words here are that want the best for you, okay? You need people that are actively helping you get to where you want to go in your life. Life is hard as it is, okay? Business is hard. Continually growing and achieving your goals month after month, year after year is not easy as it is. It gets even harder when you're around people that don't help you get there. Let me clarify what this means. Well, there's people in your life that you know of that are detractors. These are very, very known in the world. People that you can easily identify, like, hey, these people, you know, poo poo on my ideas. They don't support me. They tell me to quit when I tell them, hey, I'm trying to get in shape. They make jokes. These people are poison. Basically, you really don't have the luxury of entertaining a minute with them, a second with them, because they will drag you down. These people are obvious, and this is not what we're talking about here. The ones that are not so obvious are people that are passive. They're kind of like, hey, that's cool, but let's catch a movie. Hey, that's cool. Let's talk about something else. You're working out. That's awesome, man. Let me tell you about my problems. People that are passive, that are helping or hurting, still don't help you, right? They don't help you in any way. And you've heard me say this a billion times on the show. Your time is your biggest asset. And if you're spending time, your time with other people that are not helping you get to where you want to go in life and in business and all that kind of stuff, then you need to be conscious of that and you need to kind of limit the time you spend with them. Some of these people in your life, you really have no choice. They're family members, right? Hopefully they're not, you know, nuclear family members, because you want people that are super supportive, that are with you all the time, but they might be an uncle, an aunt, a cousin, and you'll see them once in a while on holidays, and it's not a big deal, and you can live with it. I'm not one to say that, hey, cut off all your family members because they're not, you know, helping you achieve your goals. No, that's not a reasonable request, nor do I think it's helpful, healthy. But the people that you spend the most time with, you're talking about the friends you spend time with on the weekend, who you travel with, who you speak to online, people that you message all the time, people that you follow on Twitter, people that you are, friends on Facebook and see their things on your newsfeed. These people need to be adding positive energy in your life. They need to be supportive of what you're doing. They got to be helpful. They got to be able to give you advice. They got to be able to motivate you. And of course, you're going to be doing the same for them. They need to feel like, hey, I want best for this person. And you know what I'm talking about. Most of us have experienced this once or twice in our life with people. A coach, a mentor, a good friend, somebody who's a few steps ahead of us. You may be that person in somebody's life. So you know what you're looking for here Now. Jordan Peterson has a great rule of thumb in this book about your friends. You know, how do you know which friends to keep and which ones to kind of slowly drift away from? Well, ask yourself, would you recommend this person? Would you introduce this person to somebody you admire? Okay. Somebody that you want what's best for them. Would you say, hey, I'd love to introduce you to this person? They're an awesome person. You're going to love who they are. You're going to enjoy spending time with them. They're helpful. Would you do that? Would you introduce that person to somebody else that you would want what's best for them? If the answer is no, or even a maybe, then why are you hanging out with them? That's a good question. Why? If you don't think this person can help your friends, why do you think they're going to help you? And the reason why I love this rule so much, it's because it's the one thing I really changed in my life in the last decade that has helped me improve my life, my business, my leadership, everything. I've learned so much from the right people around me. And this is not easy. Changing your friends, changing your circle of people that influence you, that you spend time with, this is something that takes time. And it also takes some heartbreak. Sometimes, not always easy, but it's okay. You got to make sure you're doing things like this to keep you moving forward. Things that are hard are usually worth doing. Okay? Does this happen to anybody else? You sit down with a juicy QPC, some McNuggets and those golden fries from McDonald's. Then you take a long sip of your Sprite because you can still hear your mama saying, don't fill up on that drink before you eat your food, but you're grown now, so you do what you want.

Must read lesson on the 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson. His fourth rule is dynamite. And that's compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today. Especially in business, we get trapped in the comparison game. I'm victim of this all the time as well. It's super prevalent, especially on social. You see people posting things about their business and their MRR and their goals and it's like, wow, these people are crushing it, right? This person's doing amazing. This person started his business same time I did and he's skyrocketing. And you can't help but compare yourself to somebody else out there in the world. Now this rule emphasizes how dangerous this is and how this can really stop you from progressing. Instead he prescribes compare yourself to who you were yesterday. Are you improving? Are you growing? Are you tracking your own goals? Do you have a way to see the numbers? Do you have a metric to see if you're improving? Whether it's dollars or customers or satisfaction rating? What is your metric and how do you know you're getting better? You need to establish that first. Once you have that established, then you can track that day by day, week by week, month by month. So you can start feeling better about your progress or see where you're not progressing and course correct as soon as possible. Like Peter Drucker says, what gets measured gets managed. And if you're not measuring something to see your progress, you're in trouble. What's funny about comparing yourself to other people is that I've been there where I've done that and you know what? Sometimes I am doing better than that person I'm comparing. That feeling is very short lived. It's kind of like, okay, cool, what now? You know, it just dies in a few seconds. So it's not even worth tracking, it's not even worth trying to go after. It's really in our nature to be competitive. But what Jordan Peterson is recommending here is be competitive with yourself, with a person you were yesterday. This is going to help you achieve more, more consistently. Why? Because you can't control other people and what happens in their life. Even Bill Gates has stated publicly that he wished he wasn't so competitive with Steve Jobs. He said this recently after he passed away. He said he wished they collaborated more, that he got a chance to learn from him more. And it's kind of hard to understand this, but these two gentlemen were highly competitive and obviously highly successful. But it's one of his biggest regrets. Wow. The other thing I want to add is that when you are constantly competing with other people, you focus on the other people and the other businesses. You don't focus on yourself. And what happens is that you start moving away from your strengths. And the reason why people loved your business in the first place, because you're not focused internally, you're focusing externally, and you start mimicking other people. You can't help it because you're focused on them so much. If I keep looking at other people's websites and their data and their information and, and their blog posts and all that stuff, if I'm just fixated on that, it's going to influence my decisions, it's going to influence my taste, it's going to influence my design. So stay focused on yourself. Compare yourself to yourself and what you achieved yesterday versus today. Pick up the 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson. It's a fantastic read. Of course there are other rules. There's 12 in total. I only covered a handful, but it's a super fascinating read backed by, again, science and literature and history and philosophy. And the application to these rules are universal. Thank you so much for listening. If you love what you hear, hit subscribe right now. I want you to do that right now. I will wait.
