Hey O. Welcome to the $100 MBA Show. No flu, just the good stuff every day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the $100 MBA, a complete business training and community online. In today's episode, you will learn how to manage a bad day. As entrepreneurs, as business owners, every day is not going to be sunshine and rainbows. Some days it really is challenging. It could be a really tough conversation with an unhappy customer, a couple of refunds that set you back, just some general frustration with communication with your team and things not getting done and not hitting deadlines. Some days pressure is high, you feel stressed, and it's really hard to stay positive and motivated. But in today's lesson, I'm going to give you some strategies, some tools to get over these tough days. No one's immune to these days. I just had one the other day and it's important for us to recognize that this will happen so we are prepared. We're not going to ignore our problems. We're not going to try to pacify them. We're going to solve them. But we're going to first get in the right state of mind and change things around so we can be in the best position to solve the issue. That's what we get into in today's lesson. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. They say when it rains, it pours. And it often does. I find that sometimes you get these days where everything goes wrong, everything comes crashing down and you just can't wait for the day to be over because it's so bad. It's ridiculous. But as business owners, we can't just step away from our problems. We gotta face them head on and we gotta be able to manage things and improve things because we're ultimately Responsible. But how do we do that? How do we stay positive? How do we change things up so we don't have an ulcer and don't make decisions or take actions that we're gonna regret later? The first thing is that you need to be mindful of the sign that you are really having one of those days and you're getting stressed out, things are getting out of control. We all know ourselves. So for you, it could be something different. But for me, I know that if I am starting to raise my voice, if I'm starting to have a bit of anger in the tone of my voice, I know I'm starting to get stressed and I need to change things. I got to do something different so I can course correct because that's not a state that I want to be in. Because I can't improve things like that. I can't make the best decisions when I'm in that state. For some people, they get quiet. Some people, their body language changes. You know yourself, you need to be mindful of this and have sort of an internal awareness and alarm that, hey, this is happening. I need to kick into action and do something to change this. So what are some things you could do to change this? Number one, change your environment. Get out of the office. You might think, I'm too busy right now, I am too stressed out. I got a billion things to do. I understand, but you're going to be able to accomplish those things with a lot more efficiency and with a lot more efficacy. You're going to make a lot more difference if you are in the right state of mind. So five minutes, 300 seconds is all it takes. I literally put my phone down. I don't take it with me. Put on some flip flops and step out. Go outside, even if it's raining. Get on up. Umbrella, it's okay if it's cold, Put a jacket on, get out of your environment, get out of the office, get some fresh air and walk around the block. Just go for a walk. Step away from the situation for a moment so you can get perspective. Don't talk to anybody. Don't do anything. Just breathe and walk. This often solves a lot of problems. It often gives you perspective. It often lets you organize your mind. You're giving yourself a chance to organize a strategy, a plan of action to take on the frustration, the things that are causing you frustration. We often don't allow our minds to have that chance. We just go, go, go, go, go. And in the process, we make a lot of mistakes and decisions that Maybe are not the best. Again, five minutes, it's all it takes. You can literally just step out, outside, wherever you are, go for a walk. I personally think a walk is better than just sitting outside because walking is known to allow your brain to stimulate and solve things. Sub Some of the best entrepreneurs make their decisions when they're going for a walk. This is recorded and detailed in so many biographies of great entrepreneurs and coaches like Bill Campbell and Bill Gates and Steve Jobs and Reed Hastings, founder of Netflix. All these people have mentioned that they go for a walk when they want to solve some things, when they want to be able to reshape the challenge they're facing. So number one, five minutes is going to make a big difference. Number two, I repeat this to myself about three or four times a day, especially when I start feeling overwhelmed. I have a big to do list, I have lots to do. There's a lot of demands on me. I say to myself, one thing at a time, one thing at a time, okay? It's very hard to do anything with any kind of positive result if you don't focus on one thing at a time. So you want to just focus on your task, get it done, next thing, and as you go through, you know, cross it off your to do list and keep going, keep going. If you feel super overwhelmed and tired and you just feel like this is so much to do, start with the things that you can get a win quickly. Momentum is very powerful. So start with a smaller task that you can complete maybe in 5, 10, 15 minutes, 30 minutes. Whether it's an email, whether it's a phone call, whether it's whatever on your to do list. Because this is going to give you some momentum. It's going to see that to do list get shorter and shorter because you're crossing things off and it's going to give you some confidence. Okay? Things are working out. Don't start with the five hour project. Number three, set up a goal, a reward for yourself at the end of the day. Sometimes we need to devise things to allow us to survive, to allow us to continue to motivate ourselves. And there's nothing wrong with doing that for yourself. This could be something so simple. It could be something like, hey, if I get what I need to get done today by closing time, whatever, six o', clock, whatever you, and you stop working. I'm gonna treat myself to 30 minutes of my favorite video game. Or an hour. I'm gonna treat myself to one scoop of my favorite ice cream down at the ice cream shop down the street, simple pleasures, things that are not going to break the bank and things that are just things that you love doing. It could be something simple like I'm gonna allow myself to have an hour of guilt free Internet browsing. I just wanna, you know, surf the web for a bit and just like, you know, look up things I've been meaning to look up. Look at some things on, you know, clothing store, online, spend a few, you know, minutes planning my next vacation, whatever, fun stuff. So set up some sort of reward. Sometimes we use this stick a lot with ourselves, but we gotta use some carrot too to say, hey, that's what I'm looking forward to. And it's sometimes just enough. That scoop of ice cream might be just enough for us to be like, all right, let's refocus, let's get these things done. I can do this. Another thing I do that really helps me get through these tough days is I remind myself of previous tough days. Hey, there's nothing. Not the first time I had a tough day. I was able to survive it. I was able to get through it. I can get through this one too. So looking at your track record helps you have the confidence to know, hey, this is nothing new. I've been here before. It sucks. Right now really is not pleasant, but I can get through this. If you're feeling overwhelmed, my number one advice is to reduce your overwhelm and get more done so you feel like you're being efficient. Stay away from social media, at least just for that day. You know, social media is a rabbit hole that it's going to waste a lot of time. It's going to make you feel even more overwhelmed. You're going to see other people doing other things and be like, oh man, they're doing so much more than I am. And look at all the goals they hit and look at all the MRR they're making and all that kind of stuff. The comparison game, we talked about that yesterday. Don't get into social if you're feeling overwhelmed. There's too much on your plate already. And social just puts more things on your plate and on your mental plate as well. So take a break. It's going to give you more time, it's going to give you more headspace, it's going to give you a chance to just focus on deep work. I'm a big fan of routine and when you have a routine to your day, it really helps you manage a bad day. So for example, if you start working at 8am and then you have a lunch at noon, take that lunch. Even if you're feeling overwhelmed and busy, okay? If you take a 30 minute lunch, an hour lunch, take that break, it's going to allow you to recharge and allow you to come back stronger. Okay? Having a routine enforces that. Okay? Now sometimes I shorten that lunch, I shorten that break a little bit. So if I normally have an hour lunch, I'll do 30 minutes. But I zone out. You know, I watch my favorite sports program or I read a book or something like that where I'm not on my computer. This will help you feel recharged and go back at it stronger. Some of us, we feel we're overwhelmed, so we do what's called a terminal lunch. We eat our lunch and at our desk, we don't give ourselves a break at all. What happens is that we run out of energy, run out of mental energy and motivation. Towards the end of the day, we start making mistakes. We feel horrible because we didn't finish everything we were supposed to finish. So these little breaks help recharge the batteries.
