On our Must Read Episodes, I share with you a book that greatly influenced me as an entrepreneur. I share with you its takeaways, its insights and why you should read it too. Today's must read is who Moved my cheese? By Dr. Spencer Johnson. Who Moved My Cheese? Is an absolute classic. I read it the first time when I was 18 years old. It was actually given to me by my boss in one of my first jobs and at first I thought it was a bit childish, almost like a children's book. But boy was I wrong. This book really helps you tackle some real grown up challenges in life and in business. In today's Must Read, I'll share with you some of my takeaways like how you can get out of your head because thinking too much is not a good thing, how nothing lasts forever and how to know when to look for the next big thing in your life, in your business, in anything you do. Can't wait to get into this one. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. Who Moved My Cheese? Tells a parable about two mice. And in this story, you can apply a lot of the lessons in your own life, in your own business. This book is about a lot of things, but one of the big points that it makes is that fear is a big hindrance on your success in life. Fear really gets you in a lot of trouble. And that's why I want to start with one of my favorite quotes in the book. What would you do if you weren't afraid? What would you accomplish if you had no fear of failure? What would you attempt? What would you get done? On a daily, weekly, monthly, annual basis? A lot of us live with a lot of fear inside of failure and all that kind of stuff. So much so, it's hard for us to even imagine what we do if we didn't have fear, if we weren't afraid. But force yourself. What would life look like to you? What are some of the things that you'd get done? It's pretty exciting, right? So the first lesson in this book that I want to share with you is this idea of being in your head. A lot of us are paralyzed by fear of failure, and we don't even recognize it. We call it R and D. I'm still researching, I'm still working on, I'm planning. The idea's got to be perfect before I launch. We think about a business, we think about a product. We might even share it with some of our friends. We might even invest in the cultivation of this idea, whether it's, you know, doing some research or going to a co working space every so often or going to meetups or conferences. And we think and we think and we think. Don't think about the cheese so much. Be like a mouse. If there's a piece of cheese in a maze, the mouse is not going to just sit there and think about, hmm, I wonder where this cheese is. It's going to start sniffing and running around the maze trying to find this cheese. They're going to start running, right? They're going to try to figure it out. In other words, it's going to start doing. You need to start doing if you want to succeed in life. You want to succeed in your business. Yes. That means that sometimes when you do things, you will fail. Sometimes you'll fall on your face, sometimes it will be embarrassing, but you'll get closer to the result. That's the point. Thinking about it is not gonna get you closer Let me say that again. Thinking about your result is not gonna get you any closer. It's the doing, the application of trying to get to that result is what's gonna get you to the result. I know that sounds so simple, but a lot of us fall in the trap of thinking about it, planning about it, browsing the web about it. A lot of this is just procrastination. It's masked as research, but really it's procrastination. We don't wanna pull the trigger. You could start pretty much any business idea in a day. You could start doing something towards that idea in a day. Really? I want to start the next McDonald's. Well, I can go to the supermarket, I could buy some burgers and some fries and I could sell it to somebody. I can have a dinner party and have tickets. I can go to my office mates right now in my work and say, hey, instead of going out for lunch, how about I make you lunch? I make the best burgers. It's only gonna cost you 10 bucks per person or 5 bucks per person, whatever you want to charge. The point is, is that you, with this idea, validate the idea, see if people like the burger, see if there's too much mayonnaise, whatever. The point is that you're doing something, you're moving closer, you're not on the fence anymore, you're actually selling burgers. I know that's a very random example, but it's even more precise or more applicable to an online business. Or you're selling a course, or you're selling some coaching. Let's say I want to launch a huge course on how to plan a European vacation, right? This course is going to actually sell for $500. And it's going to save everybody buys a course thousands of dollars if they take this course. So it's huge roi. A lot of people think, okay, I got to think about this course. I got to do all these things. You could take one step and say, I'm going to run a live webinar and answer any question you have about traveling to Europe. What is that going to do? It's going to give you some great data, great information. It's going to give you the material for the course. You're also going to grow an email list. You could sell your course later to those people. And it takes, you know, minutes to create a webinar and to invite people on social. You did something, you're moving forward. But what stops people from doing that? Fear. They want to keep thinking because by putting themselves out there by doing that webinar. What if, you know, I don't do well? What if only, you know, 15 people show up? Well, that's 15 people that you didn't have before. We're progressing. Do you see what I'm saying here? You're getting better actually doing something. And guess what? So what? You mess up. So what? You stumble on your words. So what? Have you missed a slide? That's okay. Nobody's perfect. And in fact, not being perfect is your advantage. People want people that are relatable, not people that are perfect. So stop thinking and start doing. The next lesson is. Even the biggest piece of cheese in the world doesn't last forever. So try to see when change is coming. This is so true in life and especially true in business. Wow. You know, no matter how successful you are right now, no matter how you feel good about your business or feel good about your products, it has a shelf life. You have to innovate. You have to improve. You have to pivot. You have to add something else. It can't just last forever on that alone. Let's take this podcast, for example. You know, we've innovated with this podcast so many times. You've tried different formats, we've tried different topics. We've tried different guest teachers. We had longer episodes, shorter episodes. We did it seven days a week. Now we're five days a week. We're constantly trying to improve because we understand each other. When something works, that's great, but it's not going to work forever. You got to constantly think about what's next when it comes to a product or a business. You might create a course and it's selling like gangbusters in the next few weeks or even few months or even a year, but it can't last forever. You got to add another component. You have to update maybe the course materials. You have to improve the experience of delivering the course. Maybe it's live, or maybe it's with a platform that can be improved. Life and business has seasons. Things change. Change is guaranteed. So you got to make sure that even when things are going good, that you have a plan for innovation, for improvement. Because what got you here won't get you there. I love that. What got you here won't get you there. What got you to this place today won't last forever. You have to do other things. You got to improve yourself. You got to add to what you're doing so you can continue to have that success. And the last lesson, my favorite lesson of all, don't worry, there's always new cheese to be found. The minute you start moving, things will improve. Sometimes things don't work out. Sometimes you launch a product and it's not as successful as you thought it would be. Or a marketing campaign or a hire. Right? You make a hire and they don't work out. A lot of us spend too much time feeling bad about the loss. We got to pick ourselves up as quickly as possible. Time is of the essence and realize, hey, that didn't work out. Let's learn from it. What went wrong? Why did it go wrong? How can we do things differently the next time around? A lot of this has to happen very fast, especially like a new hire. Somebody that you hired didn't work out. And by the way, this just happened to us recently at Webinar Ninja. We hired somebody and in the first couple of days, they didn't work out. Even though they went through a two week, you know, qualification and interview process. It was just not a good fit for each other. And we realized that really quickly. Instead of getting upset about it and being, you know, kind of beating up on ourselves. How did this happen? We just said, hey, it didn't work out. Why didn't it work out? What can we do next time to make sure this doesn't happen again? Let's contact more people for this position. Let's get back on the horse. The beauty of this is that most of us don't try again or don't try to improve upon our procedure because we're afraid to fail again. But as soon as you train yourself after that first time where you fail and you say, okay, you know what? That didn't work out. What can we learn? What went wrong, why? And then you take action, you move forward, you do something to improve the situation. The next time things don't work out, next time you have bad news on your plate, you're not going to have the same level of fear. You're going to realize it's not that big of a deal. I'm going to get back on my feet. Everything's going to be fine. Fear won't have the same power over you. This is the beauty of training yourself, that this is a part of life and business. Gas, snacks, tolls. This trip is draining my wallet.

It' a pretty short book. You could read it within an hour. Really? This is such a great book. It's classified as a management book actually. And the funny thing is I had this book when I was 18. I read it, kind of got it. You know, I kind of understood it on a surface level. I was 18 after all. But when I got my first managerial job when I was a first time manager at 25, when I was in education, I dug up this book and read it and boy did it help. It really had a new meaning. So this is definitely a book that you can visit and revisit and kind of refresh your memory on it. Because it's kind of a just in time book.
