2 Feb 2026 · 19 min
Podcast episode (MBA1598) hosted by Omar Zenhom featuring guest Luana Ribeira teaching how to get featured in mainstream media (BBC, Fox, Forbes, The Independent, BuzzFeed, etc.). Luana explains why media builds trust and authority, recommends preparing your business (clear offers, testimonials, Google presence), and gives tactical guidance: identify where your audience consumes media, research the right journalists/producers to contact, build relationships before pitching, tailor pitches (brief for broadcast, title+summary for publications), and persist despite fear. Episode includes multiple sponsor ad spots (Intuit QuickBooks, Dell, Fidelity, McDonald’s), a call-to-action to Luana’s Facebook group, and host wrap-up emphasizing starting small and consistency. Note: Luana cited past features and upcoming book (release planned for 2020).

But for now, take it away, Luana.
Hello, my name's Luana Ribeira and I'm here to talk to you today about how to get featured in media such as the BBC, Fox, Forbes, the Independent, buzzfeed and more. So firstly, why would you want to get your business featured in the media anyway? I mean, you' got so many things to do in your business, why focus on this? Well, let me give you one word. There's a barrier between you and your potential clients and that is trust. The main thing that's stopping people from working with you right now is trust. Trust in you and also trust in themselves. And media is something that can, it can overcome both. So if you're already on social media and you have a strong online presence, that's fantastic. Step one would be you talking about yourself and what you do and how you can help. Great. Now, to deepen the trust from that level, you'd be showing evidence, actual evidence, of you working with people and getting results for them. These can come in the form of clients stories, case studies, testimonials, reviews, and raving fans shouting about you everywhere they go. So the next level on top of that, then imagine if a brand that they know, respect and recognize is hailing you on as the expert. Well, you better believe that, say somewhere like Forbes is calling you on as an expert on that particular topic, then you are the expert in the eyes of your audience. You have proved that you absolutely are the go to expert on that topic. So as well as developing that trust, credibility, authority, every bit of media you're getting into, you're getting in front of wide new audiences and then it's up to you then to bring that audience back into your space. Before you decide to go into the media, what I would suggest is that you do have an established business, that you're very clear on your offers, that you know exactly what your message is and who the people are that you want to be drawing in. And then when you do get into the media and you're going to develop the ability to, to be everywhere at once. It's an illusion. You might be at home having a nap, but you'll be popping up all over the place. And I call that universal presence, the illusion of being everywhere at once. So every time somebody sees you, you're just going to be fresh in their mind. Then when they are ready to move forward with you, you're going to be the one that's at the top there, that the first person that they think of. So how can you maximize your chances of getting featured in the media? Well, media leads to more media. So you'll probably find that the hardest media to get will be your first few pieces. As soon as you gain momentum, what happens is people will start contacting you off the back of your media. And also you'll have these bits of media as social proof. Again, it's all about providing evidence, proof that you are the real deal. And every bit of media you get does that. You know, it's really, really effective. So before you start getting into the media, think about your social media presence. How are you coming across online? Google yourself, what comes up? Make sure that your website clear that it's direct. Make sure everything online is showing you to be the expert on that topic. You've got value pieces everywhere demonstrating that you know your stuff. You've got evidence of actually working with people and getting people those results that they want. So that is going to be really powerful because if a journalist is looking you up, they need to know that you are the real deal. Otherwise, you know, if you go onto an article or even if you go on to a TV interview or something like that, they're gonna look pretty silly if you go on and you don't know what you're talking about. So it's in their best interest to make sure that you actually do know your stuff and to prove that you know that you are showing up everywhere and demonstrating real value. So if you decide to do this, and why would you not, There are three things you need to know. You need to know where to contact. So think about this ideal person that you want to be calling into your business. Where are they? What magazine are they going to pick up and read? What TV show are they going to watch, what are they going to browse through if they're online, what are they going to look at? What you know, what blogs and everything, what social media platforms even so, and I'll go back in a minute as to why I'm mentioning social media. There so you need to contact the right places. Yeah, the places where your audience is going to be. And then when you do get yourself on there, you then bring those people back into your social media, into your ecosystem. So it has twice the impact. One is you're reaching that new audience and then two, you're bringing that piece, that value piece that shows you to be the expert into your existing audience. So next one is who to contact. So this is a little bit more challenging than you might be thinking. It's not as simple as, you know, if you want to get on the BBC, oh, let's call up the BBC. It's not like that because you need to know the right person to contact. And normally it would be the journalist or the TV producer or radio producer, or if it's a podcast, quite often it's the host or sometimes it'll be a member of their team. So you need to do the research to figure out exactly, exactly who to contact. And if you're going for newspapers or news sites, you know, something that I want to mention here as well is that if you develop a relationship with journalists that is going to be so much more powerful for you than just contacting people blind or just sending it to the general new room newsroom. So find the journalist who interested in your topic, not a journalist who's already covered what you want to cover, but who's interested in that topic. And then you come in with a new angle on it. Okay? And that's going to be really powerful for you. And it is really important to build these relationships. If you think about when you're attracting clients into your business, and you've probably experienced this yourself, okay, if somebody jumps into your inbox and immediately starts pitching you, sometimes you get a bit like, oh, you don't know anything about me. Like, you haven't even said hello, you haven't even looked at my profile. That's clear. And it's the same for journalists as well. Instead of just diving in there with your pitch, take time to build that relationship. Now, I've been doing this now for over a decade and it's got to the point now, I'll give you an example actually. This morning I just, I saw a journalist pop up on social media and I thought, huh, I haven't spoken to her for a while, so I just sent her a message to her inbox just saying, hey, how are you doing? I hope you and the family are good. And the message I got back was something along the lines of, we're doing great. Hope you are too hey, are you available tomorrow to come on the radio? And of course I said yes. So you know, that's the kind of thing that happens when you have taken the time to build that relationship. And then you need to know how to pitch. So when you ask, it depends on where you are pitching to. So sometimes they'll have guidelines if you're pitching an article. Sometimes they'll want the full finished article or if it's one of the major publications, more often than not they don't want the full article because they get so many submissions, they don't want to read all the articles. So they just want a title and a summary and make it personal as well. So you know, let them know that you've read their work, let them know that you're interested in what it is that they do before you go into your page. When it's something like the news or radio or TV show or something like that, it's normally more effective just to be straight, direct to the point, no fluff. You just let them know what you want in the subject heading of the email. You just write the headline in there and then in the body. Either a short pitch or your press release, but always straight and direct to the point. This is because journalists and producers are so, so busy. Now, before I finish up, there's one last thing that I want to cover. There's one thing that can absolutely stop you in your tracks if you're not careful, and that is fear. Now the way around this is to keep taking action. It's to keep being aware of what's going on inside your head and to keep taking action anyway and realize that you are not your thoughts and that you are fully in control. So you reach to your next level self and that is who is there to motivate you to take action. So tap into your next level self and keep taking action. That's all from me. What a great lesson by Loana Ribera. Look out for her next book that is soon to be released in 2020. Game of Build an empire from your mobile I loved this topic because it really stresses something very, very important. A lot of people don't realize to grow a great business you have to grow a large audience. I heard the marketing master Seth Godin once say early on in my entrepreneurial career, one of the easiest ways to be successful in business is to be famous. And what he meant by that is if people know who you are, if you have an audience, if you have people to talk to, if you have people to reach out to, then you can ask what they're struggling with. Build a solution and you'll have a successful business because you have somebody to sell to. This is why people have strong personal brands will never go hungry. Okay, Oprah's not going to go hungry anytime soon because she's got such a strong personal brand. That's really why she's so successful. She's not the best journalist in the world or the best interview in the world, but she's able to build a great personal brand and build a business around it. Now, of course we all can't be Oprah, but we can have a level of success and build our own audience and credibility through the media, just like Luana showed us. One of the pieces of advice I have to tell you because I struggled with this early on in my career, is just to get started. It takes a while to get the ball rolling, but get your first mention in a publication, even if that publication is small. You don't have to start with being the feature interview on BBC in a Prime slot. You can start with local TV or even a YouTube channel. In fact, it's better to start small so you can start crafting your message and getting better at delivering it. Your presentation skills so that when you are given the opportunity to hit the big time and be on tv, you are ready for the moment. Thank you so much for listening to the $100 NBA show. As long as you are working on this and you are getting mentioned in publications on a regular basis, you will build that momentum. And you'll also just be on top of mind or you'll be in mind at all times because you're not just like doing all this effort and then just not doing it at all for a few months and then trying it again. What you want to do is just aim for some continuity, some consistency. So I mention once a month or two a month and you work your way up. Thank you so much for listening to the Hunter Ombie Show.
