Hey oh. Welcome to the $100 MBA show where business is pleasure every single day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the hundred dollar MBA, a complete business training and community online over at 100mba.net and in today's lesson we'll discuss are you spending spending enough time on team morale? The reality is is that how your team members feel affect their work affect the work they do and the outcomes that you expect. The good news is is that you can actually highly influence you can really change the way they feel about working at your company by associating positivity, encouragement, significance, feeling valued, all that goodness. The good news is that you can do something about it. Making sure your team morale is positive, motivating people feel valued can really change the direction your business is moving in. One of your goals as a founder, as a business builder, as a boss is to make your team members feel like the best thing they have going for them in life is actually their job. They love going to work. It's something they value, it's something that they wouldn't want to change and that comes from how they feel about working with you. And it's your job. And to set the tone of the company. But how do you do this? How do you make sure you have good team morale? So people actually do feel good about working at your company. They feel valued. They feel that you celebrate their accomplishments and support them when sometimes they fail. How do you make the time for this as we all have very busy days? Well, that's what we get into in today's episode. This is something that you're going to have to work on sooner or later. Whether you have a small team or a big team. It's actually a pretty good idea to get started if you have a small team because you. You'll form the right habits from the start. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. One of the most challenging things about running a business is managing people. Yep, human beings. Human beings are the most interesting creatures on the planet, in my opinion, because in a lot of ways, what we do is often dictated by the way we feel. And your job as a business owner is to try your best to make sure your team members feel feel as good as possible about working in your company. One of the ways to get inspired to create that kind of company is to think back at a time when you had a job that you absolutely loved. It could be your first job when you were a teenager. It could be a job you had a few years ago. Usually in our path of our career, we'll have a job that we are just so excited to go to work and get started and be there. We actually don't even want to go home. I remember I had an experience like that when I was 25. I was working at a new school as a teacher. I was the head of department at the time. It was such an exciting time as a brand new school. I got to create new rules and new regulations and manage my own team of 30 teachers. And it was very motivating. But if I dissect, why did I really enjoy going to work so much? What was causing me to feel that way? Well, the job or my boss was giving me things that I really valued. One of them was autonomy. He gave me incredible amount of autonomy to, to create the systems for me to be successful in my position. I also felt valued regularly. Every time we met, he would praise me and make sure he understood how much he appreciates how hard I'm working. And we celebrated wins. The other reason why I was so happy, if I think back, was that I was challenged. I felt like I was learning something new every day. In fact, I felt I was learning like 30 new things every day I felt like I was being stretched. And when I don't feel that way, things feel boring. They don't feel like I really want to get up and go to work every day if I don't feel like it's going to be exciting. And overcoming challenges gives you this sense of just gratification, of accomplishing something. So if I turn it around on myself now and say, am I doing these things for my teammates? Am I challenging them? Am I praising them and making sure they feel great about the efforts they're making in the company? Am I giving them the autonomy to be successful and carve their own path, even if it's not the path I would have taken if I was in their position? So that's a really good place to start, is to change the way you perceive yourself. You are a morale maker. You're somebody who makes great morale in the company. And you do this by the actions you take. You do this by the things you give your team members. Whether there's autonomy, whether it's praise, whether it's a chance to learn through challenges and even some failures along the way. Are you willing to do that for your team members? This is going to change a lot of things, but that's not the only thing you need to do. A lot of people just leave it at that. Hey, I give them autonomy. I give them this. Why are they not so happy after a few months of being in the job? Well, motivation, like showering needs to be done regularly, right? It needs to be done frequently, I would say, as much as you shower. So at least daily, right? Motivating your team, praising them and not just, you know, hollow praise, really recognizing the things that they have accomplished, showing how they're adding value to the company, to the customers, to the bottom line. Doing it sometimes one on one and doing it sometimes in front of their peers. Are you motivating them by reminding them of the vision of what you're trying to accomplish as a team, together as a company? Are you motivating them by showing them some great testimonials from customers and what they have been saying about the fruits of their labor? Are you giving them new challenges and giving them new responsibilities regularly? You gotta do this more than once. You gotta do this all the time. And as something very simple that you can do, you can create a post it note, post it on your monitor of your computer or on your desk and write, have you motivated today? Have you tried to motivate your team in different ways today? This, at the start of this Might be one on one with each team member. If you have a small team, maybe you have a team of five or 10 people, as you grow, you're going to start having some managers and some senior people on your team. And your job is to motivate them and to make sure they're feeling like they are working at a great place because that will trickle down and that will translate to the rest of the team that they manage. And this sort of creates a culture of cheering each other on. We got to do this. No one's going to cheer us from outside. It's got to come from inside. Just like in sports, you might have noticed in the NBA when somebody's shooting a free throw, make or miss. So if they make the shot or if they miss the shot, regardless, their teammates will give them a high five. They're pushing them, they're motivating them. It's this culture they've built to say, we got your back. Keep going. You got this. And that's got to start with you. You got to start patting people on the back, giving them high fives, virtual high fives, and your managers will like it. So therefore they'll do that with their team members. You get the point. Now, of course, everybody, your team is not going to feel amazing all the time. There'll be external factors that affect the way they feel.
And.
But those are exceptions. When they come to work, they should feel like, wow, this is a place I love coming to. This is fun. This is exciting. And for many people, a great place of work can be an escape from some other things they're dealing with in life. You get to create that for your team.

To wrap up today's lesson, the way your team members feel about work, about the job they're in, about your company, is really your responsibility. You have to take responsibility and say, I gotta make sure they feel good about it. They feel motivated, they feel challenged, they feel really lucky to be working here. They're telling their friends, I love my job, I love where I work, I love my colleagues. I like the way I'm treated. This is an investment that's going to pay tenfold because not only are they going to be amazingly productive and be willing to work hard even beyond their job description, but they're also going to want to stay in your company for as long as possible. Turnover will be low. You'll save money in the long run for hiring new people. They'll attract great employees and good vibes are contagious. It spreads across the company and it's the first thing somebody notices when they join your team. So if you have a new hire, the first thing they notice is like, wow, this company is really positive. These people really love their job. I think this is going to be an amazing opportunity for me and they're not going to have buyers or more. So they're going to feel like I made the right decision by joining this company. Thank you so much for listening to the 100 MBA show. I felt like this is like a burden. I felt like just another thing to have to do every day. And then I changed my mindset and it really helped me. And the mindset is don't see it as a burden, see it as an investment. This is an investment I'm paying and doing for my team, and I'm going to get so much out of this investment. Not only am I going to create a great environment for them to work in, but for myself as well. And I'll get the best out of my teammates if they're feeling good about where they work and who they work for. Thank you so much for listening, and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode Q and A Wednesday. I'll see you then. Take care. Of.
