Hey. Welcome to the $100 MBA Show. Powerful business lessons delivered to you every single day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of the Hundred Dollar MBA, a complete business training and community online over at 100 MBA. And in today's lesson you'll learn why and how to make sure your Website's FAST in 2021. Believe it or not, the speed your pages load on your website have a dramatic effect on the success of your business. I know that sounds like a little thing and maybe something that is not that bad, but in today's lesson I'm going to break down why page speed for your website can hinder you or help you dramatically in your business. I'll also share some tips on how to speed up your website and make sure it's lightning fast. I'll share with you the tools you can use to check how fast your website is performing now so you can compare it after you make the improvements. This is literally directly correlated to your income. So let's make sure this year is the year your website is lightning fast. Let's get into it. Let's get down to business.
Let me tell you about Intuit QuickBooks. When I was starting out my business, I remember sitting at my desk late at night not working on my business but cleaning up numbers, tracking and reconciling payments and wondering how this became my life. But once I automated the admin side of things of my finances, those nights had disappeared and I felt a whole lot better outdo it with Intuit QuickBooks. QuickBooks is the trusted end to end solution that businesses rely on for getting paid, managing finances, paying employees, finding new customers, and more. QuickBooks provides a team of AI agents and trusted experts. So doing it yourself no longer means doing it alone. Their payment agent gets you paid faster. Their customer agent finds leads, follows up and secures more sales, and the accounting agent automates and categorizes transactions. Get your critical business jobs done with QuickBooks on the Intuit platform.
I want to start by saying that your page speed on your website is more than just, you know, having a good experience for your customer. The reason why page speed is so important and can directly impact your income is that search engines like Google, they will rank you really low if your page speed is slow. Page speed is one of the biggest factors in search engine optimization in 2021. So speeding up your website's load times is low hanging fruit. It's the easiest way for you to outrank your competition. That means more people will find you. More people will click on your website and find what you offer simply by just being faster. And of course, at that point, it's up to you to close the deal, to provide the right information on your website to to guide your customer to a sale. But getting them there is half the battle. And if they're not getting there because your website's too slow and Google's like not going to rank you high because you're just not a pro site. So I wanted to get that out of the way. It's actually technically hurting your business. Secondly, of course, the experience for your customers is greatly enhanced when they can go from page to page to your website in a breeze. Things load quickly, there's no wait time. Automatically they get the sense of, hey, this business has it together again. I want to get a little technical here. The heavier or the larger the size of your pages on your website, the slower it is to load. So if your website's homepage is, let's say five megabytes, it's going to take longer than a website that's less than a megabyte because it's got to transfer more information through the interwebs. Right now, if you get a lot of traffic at one time, this will really slow things down because of course your servers that are hosting your website are going to have to handle more and more traffic and more data transfer. So you're safe proofing yourself as well for the future when you have those spikes of traffic, when you have a lighter, faster site, you're More accessible to more people. People that have maybe a bad connection or a bad reception on their phone or their home WI fi bandwidth is being sucked up by everybody else watching Netflix and playing video games. The thing is that when customers visit your website and they're having a tough time, pages are loading slow. There's a good chance they're going to blame it on you. They're not going to consider their connections bad. They're going to say, what's wrong with this website? Can I trust these people? Will my order go through? These are some of the things that people think about. So you know why this is important. We know that technically it's going to hurt your ranking and less customers are going to come through your doors. We know it's going to hurt the experience of your customers. And again, if they have a horrible experience and your pages are not loading as quickly as they'd like, they're not coming back. So we know all this, so how do we improve it? So let me give you some advice. No matter where you're hosting your website, if you have like a website builder, like Squarespace, like Weebly, where everything is basically managed by them, it's on their servers, the builders on their servers. Then the first thing you need to make sure is your hosting is on point. Send them an email, ask them, are you on a shared host? That means are you sharing a server with other people with other websites? This is totally common. Most websites are on shared servers, but yours shouldn't. Now you might be saying, hey Omar, why not? You just said most people have websites that are on shared servers. Well, most non pro websites out there. If you're a business and you're relying on your website to make you money, you should be on a dedicated server. Why? Because if you're on a shared server and somebody else on that server, another website gets a ton of traffic. It's going to affect your website. So find out if they have a plan that you can upgrade to be on a dedicated server. So you own the traffic, you have the whole server to yourself. That's a very easy thing you can do. The next thing is you're going to want to go and use a tool right now to see how fast your website is. You're going to get a score. This is an absolutely free tool. It's called GT Metric. That's gtm E, T, R, I, X. And it's going to give your website a score, like A, B, C, D, maybe even F. It's also going to tell you why your website got that Score. What are some of the things you can improve on on your website? And it's going to list a whole bunch of stuff. And on the top of that list most likely is the sizes of your images. Most websites will take longer to load because of the images on the website. People upload an image that's like, you know, five megabytes large and think nothing of it. You don't need an image that you can blow up into a poster on your website. Most people aren't gonna see your website any larger than a 29 inch monitor. So you wanna optimize your images to make sure the resolution is clear. But it's the smallest size possible. A tool you can use absolutely free called tinypng. You can upload your image and it can compress it for you and download it and can take that compressed image, retaining its quality, and put it on your website. So make sure all your images are compressed so you're using less data. And your website's not that heavy, it loads faster. Also, make sure you're using an SVG logo, the logo on your website. Some people just use a PNG or a JPEG for their logo. Your logo's loaded on every page, most likely on your header of your website. There's no reason for that. Make sure your image is converted to svg, which is a vector file, and it will allow you to load your site a whole lot faster because it's a lot smaller in size. If you don't know how to turn it into an SVG, no problem. It's going to cost you five bucks or something like that. On Fiverr.com, ask a freelance to take your image and vectorize it. Make it an SVG, might cost 5, 10, 15 bucks, something like that.
Well worth it.
Next, if you're on WordPress, make sure any plugins that you're not using, you deactivate them and you delete them. Get rid of them altogether. You want a lightweight website and plugins can slow you down because they have to load every time a page loads. So only use the plugins you absolutely need. Some people, they use three or four builders. I used to do that. Bad idea. Use one or to max and make sure they're lightweight. Next, if you're also on WordPress, take a look at your theme. You want to make sure you have a lightweight, fast theme. It's better for you to have a lightweight, simple theme and use a page builder like Elementor, for example, to be able to customize your pages that have a heavy theme. Next, Take a look of any scripts that you have in the header tags. This could be like tracking pixels like Google Analytics or a Facebook pixel. This could be little tools you're using. Messenger apps, pop ups, things like that. Minimize those as much as possible. Remove any old code or anything you're not using. Again, your pages will have to load these and read these before it loads the page. Some of us, we put things up on our website or our developer does and we forget about them. We don't use them anymore. So clean that up.

So now we know how important it is to make sure our website is lighting fast. We have a game plan on what to do right now to speed up our website, but I have to share with you something critical. Okay, Once you do this cleanup, that's not enough. Okay. Once you make sure your server power is good, you have your dedicated server, you've cleaned up your images, your logo, your plugins, all that kind of stuff, your website is moving fast. You scored yourself on GT metrics and you've improved. You're on an A right now. Your website's not static, right? You continually improve it. Add things, add pages, add, you know, squeeze pages, opt in pages, blog posts. You're constantly adding things from week to week. Sometimes, right as you go along, you gotta keep these practices in mind. Uploading compressed images, testing the page speed of any new page that you add to your website to make sure it's fast. Take a look at the traffic you're getting on your website and see if you need to upgrade your servers. Take a look at the traffic you're getting your website and find out if you need to upgrade your server or your hosting platform altogether. It's the maintenance and the monitoring that's really important, because you can have a fast site today after you fix it, but a month later, it could be slow again if you don't maintain it. You might even want to create a checklist of things you need to check before you publish a new page or post that wraps up today's lesson. Thanks so much for listening guys. This is really low hanging fruit. This is something you could do over a weekend that can increase your bottom line immediately and improve your overall experience for your customers. If you found today's episode useful, share it on social media with your friends and family, take a screenshot and let them know about the hundred Dollar MBA show. Before I go, I want to leave you with this. If everything I said today made sense and you're on board but you're just not into it, you just don't want to do the work, then look to hire somebody to do it for you, it's well worth the investment. You get a freelancer on upwork, they can maintain your website, you can have them on retainer and they can do all this stuff for you and maintain your site and make sure it's lightning fast. It'll be well worth whatever you pay them. Especially if you're making all these efforts to have a great product, a great service, marketing, ads, all these things. You're just going to reap the benefits on the other end when they get to your website and it's lightning fast. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in. Tomorrow's episode Freeride Friday. I'll see you then.
Take care.
Of.
We've all been there. You hold on to a coupon, hoping to cash it in at the store, but then you forget about it and suddenly you've got a mountain of useless expired coupons.
Do you think this one's still good? Free milk.
Oh mate, that expired in 1993.
Dang it.
Fortunately, there are better ways to save money, like by switching to Geico. You could save about 900 on car insurance without ever touching a coup one.
Ooh, how about this one?
Half off floppy discs.
Now you should try a bit of spring cleaning.
It feels good to save big. It feels good to Geico.
