If you don't know Kevin Hart's story, he comes from absolutely nothing. Very, very simple beginnings and has become one of the largest stars we know on the planet. He's an entrepreneur himself. He's got his own production company called Heartbeat Productions that he really, really invests a lot of time and energy in, and he shares how he's able to grow those businesses and his career as an actor and comedian and keep the negative ideas and thoughts and vibes outside of his head. He covers so much in this book, but I want to give you some of the highlights that I really enjoyed. The first takeaway is he really stresses that if you don't believe you can be successful, no one will. And he just doesn't leave it at that. He says, well, how do you believe? Well, the first thing for you to start believing is is to stop yourself from engaging in self doubt. He says self doubt is one of the biggest killers that crushes people's dreams right before they even get started. Self doubt's that voice in your head that tells you either you can't do it or you don't deserve the rewards or who are you to be successful. He says the key to believing in yourself is not to be cocky or overconfident or or incantations or to talk to yourself in the mirror, but it's to stop yourself from doubting yourself. One of the exercises he shares to stop self doubt is to be too busy doing and not allow yourself time to doubt yourself, to just get busy with the work you have to do to be successful. If you want to be a successful blogger, be too busy writing blog articles and working on your SEO and crafting your website. If you're spending time and energy and brain space working on that stuff, there won't be time or space for you to doubt yourself. He also mentions it helps if you encourage yourself. Now, he doesn't mean just literally pat yourself on the back, but when you Notice you do a good job at something, even something small. Pump yourself up and say, hey, great job. Tell yourself you've done a good job, either actually verbally or just internally. In the beginning, you're not going to have a lot of cheerleaders, so you're going need to do it yourself. Another huge takeaway from this book is how he deals with failure. When things don't go right, even when they're not, quote, unquote, your fault, how do you deal with that situation? What do you do? Most of us get frustrated. We get mad and feel, man, life is just unfair. Well, he shares a story in the book where he had to do a gig in New York. He's from Philadelphia. He was really, really on tough times. Didn't have much money at all. Spent all his money just to get to New York. Didn't have enough money for gas to drive home. He gets to the gig and the club manager doesn't pay him for the gig. He's furious, he's angry. This is not fair. He did the set, he did his side of the bargain of the deal, and he didn't get paid. Somehow he was able to get one of the other comedians to let him borrow some money so he can have enough gas money to drive back home. And he was furious for two days. And he said, I wasted two days of my life being angry. What he advises his past self to do is, what could you have done to prevent that from happening or to make sure this doesn't happen in the future? Get over the fact that this is not your fault. Get over the fact that it's not fair. Okay, that's been established. Now what? Let's learn. Well, he was like, well, maybe I could have asked for the money. Well, he said, well, maybe in the future I'll ask for 50% of the money up front and then 50% before I get on stage. The point here is, is that he sees a failure, he sees an injustice, he sees a tough time in his life. And he asks himself, how can I get something out of this? How can I learn something? How can I make sure my future is better because of it? This is a huge exercise, a great strategy, because you will have failures in business. You will hit some tough times. You will hit challenges that are out of your control, things that happen that you can't do anything about. And it's not going to be fair. Right? If you're on a software company, your software can go down because the Amazon servers that you're hosting on go down. This is not your fault. You've done everything right. You've created a great software, but your customers get angry and leave because of something that you didn't do. Yes, it's unfair. Yes, it's a bummer. But how can you learn from the situation to make sure you have redundancy and it doesn't happen in the future? That takes mental strength to do that in the moment. And this is what this book is all about, how to build that mental strength. Have these strategies so when you're faced with challenges in life, you're ready and every challenge makes you stronger. Another great takeaway from this book is his strategies on cutting out negative people from your life. And he says, this is going to be really hard because some of these people are going to be your friends and family. People that complain, people that blame everybody else for their problems, people that don't want to do the work. These people will drag you down. It's hard enough as it is, but to have people trying to drag you down, that makes it even harder. So as much as possible, you're going to want to distance yourself as much as you can from people like this. Spend as little time as possible as you possibly can. And he shares some strategies in the book on how to do that. He also does not spend any time with anybody who wastes time. Time wasters. He is a stickler about being on time and not wasting anybody's time because he believes time is basically your life. I'm a big believer of that as well. In fact, Kevin Hart not work or speak or hang out with anybody that is ever late without, like a really valid excuse. So if somebody shows up to an appointment or to dinner or whatever, and they're late and it's just because they just didn't manage their time well, that's the last time you're going to hang out with Kevin. And it's not like a vindictive thing. It's not a mean thing. It's just like a rule in his life. He's like, hey, my life is super, super important to me. I value my time. Maybe you don't see time the same way I. But because of that, we're just not going to hang out anymore. Because you already proved to me that you don't respect time. And for me, that's a big thing. That's just a mismatch of values. There's one thing to say. I really value time. And time is important to me. And time is money and all that kind of stuff. And to actually believe it and to hold that banner and to really hold people accountable for it. I thought to myself when I was hearing this, like, oh man, why don't you just give them one or two chances? But then he explains, I don't need to give him one or two chances because people that know me, people that get to know me know that this is one of the things they hear about it, they say, oh, Kevin's really, really somebody who cares about being on time and really cares about making sure no one wastes his time. So they kind of know not to do that. It's part of his reputation, which is a pretty cool thing to be known for. Another thing he shares in the book that I thought was very interesting is how you can do things to encourage yourself to get started with a new habit, with a new goal. Sometimes we need to kind of just do whatever we can, whatever is at our disposal to push ourselves to get started. And getting started is the hardest part. So say, for example, you want to get into running and you want to run every morning. Getting up in the morning and putting on your sneakers and going out there for a run, that first step is really hard to do it the first time. So he said to make it easy on yourself, to just make it super simple. Tell yourself, I'm only going to run for 15 minutes. 15 minutes is nothing. It goes by fast. And that's the standard that's winning. Fifteen minutes is the goal. He says you can even sweeten up a little bit more. Buy yourself a pair of new sneakers so you can look forward to waking up in the morning and lacing them up for the first time to go on that run. Whatever you need to do to push yourself.

Guys. Today's must read. The decision by Kevin Hart is not only really thought provoking, interesting, useful a that I'm going to revisit over and over. It's also flat out hilarious. It's actually a lot of fun. Kevin Hart is obviously a comedian. He talks to you directly on the audiobook and you feel like you're just hanging out with Kevin Hart. And he's hilarious. The examples he gives and the things he kind of says off the cuff the jokes he makes just so you can be able to swallow some of the tough stuff he tries to encourage you to do. It's such an entertaining read that you're able to learn so much and feel like you want to keep on listening and find an excuse to keep that audiobook going to extend your walk or to extend your drive or your workout at the gym. Lastly, he draws from his own experiences in life, his mistakes, his failures, his struggles, his tribulations, all that stuff. He throws it in the book and gives you real life examples of how to implement the things to make you mentally tough to be able to take on the challenges of whatever you're trying to do in life. There's a lot to learn from them. They've been there, they know what it takes and what you're going to face. No matter where their success lies in life, you can really extract something, a gem, a nugget, like Kevin Hart says in the book, but he refers to chicken nuggets for some reason. He's a comedian after all. But the point here is that there's tons of value from learning from others that been there, done that. So go ahead and grab the decision from Kevin Hart over at Audible.
