Omar Zenhom shares a simple morning routine: wake 1.5 hours earlier, skip your phone, and use that time for exercise, journaling, or practice. The key is doing it every day, including weekends, and making the shift all at once rather than gradually.

To Start Every Day with a Win this is a strategy that I have worked on for some time. This has been really hard for me to do. It's a strategy that I formed based on a lot of different pieces of advice that I've heard along the years, from Hal Elrod's the Miracle Morning to Kevin Hart's the Decision, to random videos I've watched from Jim Rohn on YouTube to reading and studying philosophy and history. And it's pretty simple. And it's all about how you start your day. How you begin your day matters so much. It sets the tone for how you are going to function and react to what happens. Starting a day is like almost starting a new life. Every day you wake up, it's a fresh start and how you approach that day will change depending on how you start it. So it's so important to start your day right. So how do you start your day? How do you start your day? So it's a win no matter what happens? Well, first let me explain how you shouldn't start your day and I'll just share with you how I used to start my days every single day. And this would set me up for failure. This would set me up for feeling horrible, demotivated, not really looking forward to taking on the day. I'd wake up in the morning around 7 o' clock and the first thing I would do is check my phone, I would check messages on Slack, I would check any messages from the team, anything on Twitter or Facebook that I need to worry about. I would check WhatsApp messages from family. I would check any kind of urgent emails or replies I was waiting for. I would spend about 20 minutes just on my phone. So basically I would load my head with a bunch of worries, problems, issues, concerns. I might even catch a few really devastating headlines on social media. I would then get up from bed, go to the bathroom, brush my teeth, take a shower, and then I would try to kind of sluggishly make myself some breakfast. And the whole time I'm thinking about all the things I consumed on my phone that morning, that first 20 minutes. The problems, the issues, the things I have to do, the things that are basically making me feel anxious and really feel basically borderline depressed because of all the information, all the negativity that I just downloaded in my brain. First thing in the morning, I'll gobble up my breakfast as fast as possible and then jump on the computer to get started with all the problems I had to solve, all the issues that I just saw, all the things I needed to reply to, I reacted. I basically decided this was the way to start every day. And I just chalked it up of, hey, this is how entrepreneurs work and this is their life and they put their business first and that's it. I put myself last. And that's a horrible way to start the day. And it really sets you up for long term burnout. It really sets you up for just not loving what you do. Listen, the problems are there. The challenges you have in your business are not going anywhere. That's true. But you gotta be able to know how to set yourself up for success, to set yourself up to be able to take on these challenges in the right frame of mind. So here's my advice. This is how you can start the day with a win. Every single day, you're going to wake up an hour and a half earlier than you normally do. 1 hour and 30 minutes. Yes. That means you might have to go to bed a little earlier, but it's well worth that sacrifice. So instead of me getting up at 7, I get up at 5:30. Now I am used to having to look at my phone, make sure I address any issues. We have a global team, people working while I'm sleeping, all that kind of stuff. So there's things that kind of change and come up while I'm getting up or while I was asleep. So I will still look at my messages and my Slack notifications, all that kind of stuff. But not first thing in the morning because now I'm getting up at 5:30. I will just like I used to look at it at 7 o'. Clock. A lot of us think we have to look at our messages immediately as soon as we get up because we got to see what's going on. Well, this strategy really cancels out that idea because hey, I normally get up at seven every day. That's when I used to look at it. So I'm not really late if I look at it at 7, if I get up at 5:30. So instead I don't even look at my phone. I go, I take a shower. I allow myself to just spend some time in some peace with, with a clean mind, with a fresh mind, thinking of what I'm grateful for. Have a nice breakfast. And then I do something to work on myself. And that usually is going to the gym. I go for a 45 minute workout, I come back, I take a shower and I'm ready to start the day at seven. Now this simple thing does so many things. Number one, no matter what happens in the day, I got my workout in, I worked on myself. I feel like I've done something to improve myself before I even start the day. So no matter what happens, I gotta win in two, when you start the day like that, you are starting the day feeling in control. This is so important. You feel like I'm controlling what's happening and not the things around me are controlling me. Okay, you feel in control because, hey, you dictate what happens. You dictate the way you feel, you have a pleasant breakfast and then by going to the gym, for me, it makes me feel like, hey, I can control this. I can control my improvement, I can control the way I feel about my body, I can control how I feel about myself, my improvements, no matter what happens. I got that. And maybe for you, you don't want to go to the gym every day or work out every day. Maybe one day you want to journal, the other day you want to paint whatever it is, work on your thing, your craft. Something that will help you put yourself first in the priority list. Why? Because if you feel good, if you feel empowered, if you feel like you're improving, you feel powerful, that momentum is going to help you conquer what's ahead, whatever is in that inbox, whatever those messages say, whatever challenges are ahead. I do recommend that at least three days out of the week, you use that hour for exercise. Because exercise gives you energy, allows you to sleep Better. It makes you feel good. Okay, just getting oxygen. This is just biology, okay? Just getting oxygen in your bloodstream, it will help you feel good. So doing this, starting every day, working on yourself before anything else will help you feel empowered. Will start every day with a win. And no matter what happens again, you got that. You cashed in and got a win. Now some words of caution. Many people do this or try this, and they only do it on weekdays. No, humans do not function that way as human beings. Consistency is our best friend. No matter what happens, you need to stay consistent and do this even on the weekends, even if you have a long night. Say, for example, you have a long night on Saturday, you're out partying or maybe you had some guests over or whatever it is, and you go to bed late, wake up your early, time your hour and a half early, no matter what, even if you're not working that day, stay consistent. Go to the gym, exercise. Even if it means later on in the day you take a nap to make up for that lost sleep, that's fine. But the consistency matters because I noticed that when I started doing this that I would do it only on the weekdays. I wouldn't do it on Saturday and Sunday, and two days of not doing it is enough consistency for me to get off the good habit. Monday was incredibly hard to get up that hour and a half early. I don't want to make it hard on myself. I don't want to make it hard on you, so stay consistent. Another word of caution, don't make it so hard on yourself. If going to the gym is so hard for you in the beginning, the first week, just spend that hour and a half early, having a slow morning, getting some fresh air outside, maybe going for a walk, journaling, maybe take some audio notes. Stay away from your phone, though, because you don't want to see any of your messages. Even do a puzzle like sudoku or crossword. Point here is that you're just doing something for yourself. You're working on yourself. Your brain, your body, your thoughts, your emotions. Ever want to get into something like playing the piano? This is your chance. You have an hour every morning to jump onto the piano, get some reps in, maybe do some online courses. And you work on yourself. You work on your craft. Start off with something that is easy, that comes natural to you. That's something that you're looking forward to. For me, I like the gym because I like to step out of the house, get some perspective. I like to listen to audiobooks or podcasts while I'm at the gym. This really allows me to have my alone time and have myself some time to have my thoughts or gather my thoughts. To me, that is really appealing to me. Do something that appeals to you, that comes natural to you. That's easy for you to say. Yes, I'm looking forward to doing that in the morning, even if it means getting up a little earlier.

How you start your day is really, really crucial. And I know that some of you might be saying, hey, Omar, I like to work out at the end of the day, or I like to do these things at the end of the day to maybe unwind. Okay, that's great. I'm not saying you can't do that at the end of the day, but start your day with it as well. Do something else in the beginning of the day. Don't do it at the end instead of the beginning. Why? Because it really shows yourself that you're putting yourself last. You basically get the bottom of the barrel. You basically get whatever is left in your tank. Whatever energy you have, whatever attention you have, you're really not your best. By giving yourself that time at the start of the day, you're prioritizing yourself, understanding you're investing in yourself that a good you is a good business is a good company. I know as entrepreneurs that we sacrifice so much that we feel we have to give our all to make our business successful. But we want to be in business for as long as possible. We want to have sustainability. And if we don't prioritize ourselves and give ourselves that time to start the day with a win, you're asking for trouble. You're asking for burnout. You're asking for a crash and burn in your business. Do not do this. You are in control. This is your business and it works for you, not the other way around. Before I go, I want to leave you with this Starting a new habit is one of the hardest things to do, especially something that might not come natural to you. Waking up a little earlier. I've tried a lot of things, like incrementally waking up earlier by 20 minutes, 30 minutes. It's actually easier to go cold turkey. It's actually easier just to go one shot and get used to it in a few days. That's at least in my experience. See it as an investment. See it as something that you have to do and not a nice to do. Also, starting your day, working on yourself, getting up early. These are all traits of successful people, people that I've read about. Biographies, successful entrepreneurs, athletes, musicians. They all make sure they start the day right. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. Q and A Wednesday. I'll see you then. Take.
