MBA1797 How to Build an Audience P2 + Free Ride Friday
2 Feb 2026 · 17 min
This is a transcript of a 100 MBA Show podcast episode (host: Omar Zenhom) giving part two of a two-part series on building an audience. The host recommends choosing one primary content medium—blogging, podcasting, or YouTube—then committing to a sustainable publishing cadence and at least two years of consistent output. He details trade-offs (SEO power for blogs, distribution/platform advantages for podcasts, algorithmic reach for YouTube), emphasizes creating high-value content that converts viewers/listeners/readers into an email list via clear calls-to-action, and encourages reps and patience. The episode also contains multiple ad reads (Intuit QuickBooks, Dell Tech Day, Fidelity, Metro by T‑Mobile) and the weekly "Free Ride Friday" giveaway announcement.

I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of Webinar Ninja, an independent software company I started with my partner back in 2014 and today's episode is part two of our two part series on how to build an audience. Yesterday in part one we discussed the importance of building an audience and why email marketing is where it should be happening. Building that email list how powerful and valuable this audience can be not only for your business right now and in the future, but when you decide to sell this business one day. We also touched on the three ways I recommend building an audience that will lead to building your email list. And in today's episode we go into depth on how to build a strategy around these mediums. How to build great, valuable content that people want to share and learn more about your business. This is where we roll up our sleeves and commit to growing our audience little by little every single day. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.

All right, let's Build this Audience Using a Content Medium now there are three mediums that I highly recommend that can help you build your audience in a significant way. Blogging, podcasting, or growing a YouTube channel. These are three distinct ways to grow your audience. This is a way for you to actually create great content that leads to building your email list so they watch your video on YouTube. Your call to action on the video is to learn more or to download the worksheet or to get my cheat sheet on this topic. Head on over to the link in the description where you can, you know, put the link on the screen. They go to that page on your website. They put their name and email address. They're on your list. They're part of your audience. So your first job today is to decide do you like to write blog posts? Do you like to write? Is your preferred mode of communication expressing yourself? Teaching? Is it in written form? Maybe it's in audio format, Podcasting, like I'm doing right now. Do you enjoy getting on the mic and delivering great information, interviewing incredible people, sharing knowledge via audio? Or do you prefer being on camera? Do you prefer video? This could be even animated shorts. This could be you teaching over slides. This could be vlogging. Now I highly recommend these three platforms because it allows you to grow an audience through consistent, valuable content. There are pluses and minuses to all of them. Let me go through a few of them right now. If you decide to blog, which I absolutely love. I started my career in content marketing and blogging. I really am a big believer in blogging, because of the SEO power it drives to your website. When people find your blog posts via Google, they are going to your website. It is going to boost the ranking of your site for your keywords, and it's going to just increase your power as a business big time. You're leveraging the power of SEO when you're blogging, but it does require for you to write epic content. Google does prefer long form content opposed to short form. There's so many hacks and tricks that people try, but Google's smart. Okay, Back in the day, before Google was really optimized, you know, maybe 10 years ago, people used to publish 10 blog posts every day. And each blog post was, you know, a paragraph. And it just looked like the site was just this powerhouse site. But now actually in depth, long form, valuable content is what Google loves, rich content. Now, the downside of this is that you're not really part of an ecosystem that will promote your content organically. But when people do find it via search engines or via you sharing it on social or other means, it does add a lot of power to your website. Now, if you choose to podcast, podcasting is a great platform. Conversely, you have the power of being on different platforms. When you distribute your podcast, you're on Apple podcasts. That's one platform. You're on Spotify, you're on Himalaya, you're on Overcast. The point here is that these platforms will distribute your content and they have their own algorithms for people to find you. They might find you interesting, or the editor of this platform will display you. We've been displayed on many platforms because editors that know kind of review these platforms, whether it's Apple podcasts or Stitcher Radio, they will put a banner and promote us because they want other people to find other podcasts and continue to stay on their platform. So that's a huge advantage. Now, producing a podcast takes a lot more production than it does to write a blog post. You don't need much equipment, you don't need much time. You don't need many team members to publish regular blog posts. In fact, I did by myself for a very long time. But with a podcast, there's more production involved. The scripting, the recording, the editing, the mastering, the ID3ing, the show notes, the publishing, all that kind of stuff. It is doable for you to do like a weekly podcast on your own. Nicole and I did it on our own for the first 300 episodes. But if you're publishing more than that or you're looking to do this for long term, you're going to need some help and you're going to need to hire a teammate or two to help you out, but totally doable for you to get started right now. YouTube, amazing algorithm. It's a great place to start a video channel. Probably the best organic growth out of the three. But it's crowded. Millions of videos are uploaded every day. Plus the production that it requires to record and produce videos is as much as a podcast, if not more. But video is powerful. It's on the rise, and being on YouTube gives you a serious chance for you to reach a lot of people. I've seen so many YouTube channels grow in the past few years, and it's never too late. If you have great content and you're able to share with other people in a way that they can comprehend it and enjoy it, you have a good chance of growing an amazing audience via YouTube. So pick one. I'm being honest here, I'm being serious here. Pick one of these three, because these are the three that are going to give you the best chance of growing an audience. You don't know which one to pick. Try it out. Try blogging for a month. Try podcasting for two months. Start producing some videos, even a vlog, for the next six weeks. See which one do you enjoy the most? See which one comes naturally to the most, the one that you feel most comfortable and one that you can stick with for 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 years. For me, I chose podcasting because I really enjoy audio format. We continue to blog on our websites because I really love blogging. And one day, who knows, I might jump in and build a YouTube channel that's a powerhouse channel that distributes some great videos. We have some videos on our channel, but they are not produced for the channel. They're actually just produced for our website and we share it on YouTube. So choose one now. When you are choosing one, understand you are committing, you are committing to producing regular content with this format for now, at least for two years. I want you to commit to two years minimum, because that's when you'll start to see traction. That's when you'll start to see the benefits of this. If you have a YouTube channel, you'll start monetizing by then. If you have a blog, you'll start seeing some traffic, significant traffic that will lead to leads. If you have a podcast, same thing. So the point here is that commit to what you want to do, which medium, for two years. Now you're going to create a publishing schedule. You're going to commit to publishing a blog post, a podcast episode or a video on YouTube at a frequency that works for your schedule. Don't overstretch. Do what you know you can do. So if that's publishing a blog post once a week, that's great. Maybe that blog post is once a month, but that blog post is epic. It's 5, 6, 7, 8,000 words. That's an absolute killer guide. This is how our blog is on Webinar Ninja if you want to check it out. Webinar ninja.com blog we publish a blog post, a new guide, a new in depth post every six weeks because it's huge and it takes a lot of work to put it together. Yes, we have a few blog posts that are shorter than that, but the vast majority of them are long form and take a bit of time to put together. Same thing goes with podcasts. Find a cadence that works for you. Same thing with publishing videos, uploading them to YouTube. How often do you want to publish? Don't commit to daily vlogging when you're just starting out. Commit to one video a week and make sure you deliver. It's like paying a bill. Do it now. When you're delivering this content, make sure the whole purpose of the content is to give them incredible value, to transform them, to give them a result, to give them something new, to give them an aha moment. To make them feel like wow, I really got something out of this. This is what I try to do with every single podcast episode here on the 100 MBA Show. And then I also mention my websites. I mention where they can learn more so they can head on over and opt in to my email list so I can grow that email list as my audience. Gas, snacks, tolls. This trip is draining my wallet.
Yeah, but we'll be with family.

Guys, in this two part series we learned the importance of building an audience. How to build it, Focusing on email, choosing a medium, blogging, podcasting, YouTube, knowing how to decide, committing for two years to publishing incredible content and then committing to a cadence once a week, once a month, whatever it is to publish that piece of content on a regular basis. Now, how do you get to the point where you know every time you publish it's going to be epic, or at least very valuable? Well, it's going to take a lot of reps. Your first videos, your first podcast episodes, your first blog post won't be the best. And you got to be okay with that because you are getting there. But put in the reps now and the advantage of being new is that no one knows about you. So all your cringe worthy work is really not going to land on a lot of people's eyes. But in the meantime, you're getting better and better and you're knowing what your audience wants, what resonates with them, what gets a lot of hits, what gets a lot of views, and it doesn't matter. Don't get discouraged. You are already committed to two years of this. You will be producing some amazing stuff within those two years. You're going to hit gold one time and then you're not going to hit gold and then you're going to really knock it out of the park and then you're going to start getting some momentum, win after win. There's no secret formula. It just takes work. Just commit to it and you'll be glad you did.
