2 Feb 2026 · 10 min
Podcast episode (MBA1801: "Is Your Product Unique Enough?") hosted by Omar Zenhom (100 MBA Show). The host argues that businesses should choose one clear unique selling proposition rather than attempt multiple claims; recommends customer interviews, reading testimonials, and focusing marketing on the single differentiator. Uses concrete examples (Webinar Ninja: ease of use; Tesla: fun-to-drive; Google Home: better answers; a Japanese restaurant: fish quality). Transcript includes recurring sponsored ad segments (Intuit QuickBooks, Dell Tech Day, ADP, Fidelity) and a shout-out to Shonda Souza's book The Brain Audit.

Hey O welcome to the 100 RMBA show business lessons delivered on a silver platter every single day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of Webinar Ninja, an independent software company I started with my co founder back in 2014 and in today's episode you will learn. Is your product unique enough? Whatever you sell, your product, your service, your coaching, your course, your software, your book, whatever it is, in order for it to stand out from the crowd to compete with the competition, it has to be unique. You have to have some unique selling proposition. Otherwise why would I buy your product? I'll just go with another brand that's more well known or more competitively priced. Why should anyone give up their hard earned dollar if you're not unique? In today's lesson, I'm going to share with you how to make sure your product's unique. Going to put you out of your misery and share with you a great strategy on how to find your uniqueness. And here's a little hint, you don't find it, you actually choose it. And then how to make sure your customers know about it. This lesson today might just change your entire business and see incredible gains just by making a Few changes. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.
ADP knows anything can change the world of work. Like what if a blocked shipping port caused a worldwide coffee shortage? Suddenly, businesses are scrambling to manage an increasingly drowsy workforce. Productivity slips 20% just due to the extended time it takes to conduct a job interview while yawning. Anything can change the world of work. From HR to payroll, ADP helps businesses take on the next anything. ADP always designing for people.
Many people think they have to discover or uncover their uniqueness. But in fact, he believes the best way to do this is to choose your uniqueness. You get to choose. What do your customers want? What are their needs? This is why customer interviews are so important. And then from there, you say, this is what makes me unique. You choose what it is. This is actually exactly what Elon Musk did with Tesla. He wanted to create an electric vehicle that's fun to drive. Now, where people get stuck is that they don't choose. And this is what Sean talks about in the book, is that you might find two or three or four things that you think is unique about you, but you really need to just choose one thing. Why? It's not that you're trying to belittle your company or your service or your product or undervalue it. The truth of the matter is, is that your customers, your potential customers, can't focus on more than one thing. If you have one message, one uniqueness, it will hit home and resonate. But if you try to convince them of two or three or four things, it just gets confusing. And as I always say, a confused mind never buys. So choose. What is the one thing your product, your business, your service does best, that does better than everybody else? If you're not sure, talk to your customers, read your testimonials, read reviews. You'll find a commonality. We did this in our own webinar software, Webinar Ninja, our company. And we learned the thing that makes us so unique, that makes people love webinar so much, is that it's dead easy to use. It's not confusing. It's not hard for them or their attendees. It's just easy. So instead of us trying to say, hey, we're easy to use, plus we have rock solid technology and we have amazing support and we have this and that and that, which is all true. We focus on our one uniqueness, which is we are the easiest webinar software on the market. And by doing that, that uniqueness really resonates with everybody. That visits the website, they're like, oh, great, this is exactly what I'm looking for. If that's my messaging, it's going to hit home. Now you might ask the question, well, what if your customer is asking other questions like, do you integrate with this and this and this? That information is on the website. You know, you know all the features. They can find that information. But when it comes to my branding and messaging and what I'm trying to promote, I choose one uniqueness. You need to do the same in your company. This is gonna make your product unique enough because you're not gonna confuse your buyer, whatever that uniqueness is. Because then when somebody comes to your website or learns about your business, they know you're the easiest to use product. You're the most efficient product. You're the fastest product. You're the most cost effective product. You're the service that has the best community. You're the coach that creates a unique plan for each person. You're the course that teaches the lesson or teaches the outcome as quickly as possible. You don't have long courses, you have short courses that are just as effective. This is uniqueness. This is what's going to make you stand out. This is what is going to make it easy for other people that use your product or service to tell other people about you because they don't have to talk about a whole bunch of things. You say, oh, you got to use this product because it does this so well. Think about the things that you love that are unique. For example, I have a bunch of Google home speakers at home, and to me, they're the smartest speaker. They're way better than Siri, way better than Alexa, in my opinion. Why? Because they just give better answers. That's what makes it unique. When I ask it a question, it just gives me the answer. It doesn't fumble. It doesn't say, I don't know. It just gets me a better answer than the other ones. Yeah, I can mention other things about how it looks and how it sounds and how it integrates with other apps, but really, this is what makes it unique. And that's what I say to other people about it. Went to a great Japanese restaurant a few weeks ago. What do I say when I tell other people, you have to go to this restaurant? I say, the quality, the quality of their fish is amazing. This is why you have to go. There are other things I like about it. The ambiance is beautiful. The wait staff is incredible. It's a good value. All that stuff is Great. But really, the uniqueness is what people rave about. It's one thing. Hey Fidelity, how can I remember to invest every month?

To wrap up today's lesson, you don't have to rack your brain about what makes your company unique. Ask your customers. If you're just getting started and you don't have customers to ask, then just start by just choosing one of the things that you think you do well with your business. Start there. And then once you start getting customers, you can ask them, send them an email, ask them to take a survey, get on a video call with them. I can't stress how important it is to talk to your customers and learn what they love about your product or service so that you can continue to flex that muscle and market that uniqueness. Choose, don't discover thanks so much for listening to the 100 LMBA Show. Big Shout out to Shonda Souza, who taught me this little tidbit that I wanted to share with you today. Check out his book the Brain Audit. Highly recommend it. It's one of my favorite favorite business product marketing books out there. I've read it more than once because it's that good. Before I go, I want to leave you with Being unique doesn't mean being revolutionary or doing something no one else does. It just means you do it better than everybody else. Everything I mentioned as an example today wasn't unique, was invented before was offered somewhere else. Whether it's the electric car, Tesla didn't invent that, or a smart speaker, or even a fancy Japanese restaurant. Nothing new under the sun. It's just that they chose to focus on something that and hit it out of the park by being great at one thing. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode Freeride Friday. I'll see you then. Take care.
