I'm also the co founder of Webinar Ninja, an independent software company I started with my partner back in 2014 and in today's episode you will learn is WordPress still the best option when it comes to your website? I would say. For over a decade WordPress has been the go to platform for online businesses, bloggers and e commerce stores. It's open source, it's free, it's very customizable and most website hosting companies are optimized for WordPress. But there has been so many new options for different types of business websites that have popped up in the last few years. Do I still recommend WordPress for no matter what kind of business you have, whether you're launching a new business, whether you're looking to do a redesign, a refresh for your existing website, or rebranding or you're gonna wanna listen up to this episode because things have changed and depending on your needs and what you don't need, WordPress may or may not be the way to go. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.

It's our way to say thanks for showing us love and giving us feedback on Apple Podcasts. All right, let's jump into Today's lesson. Is WordPress still the best option for your business website? I want to start by saying that I am a huge WordPress fan. I'm a WordPress nerd. I have special feelings towards WordPress because that's how I got into web development. I've earned a lot of money building websites. When I was starting out, I built my technical and business chops around WordPress and I like it because I like to modify and edit and customize and design. And WordPress gives me a lot of flexibility. And it gives you a lot of flexibility even if you don't want to do that. Like you could just buy a theme and you install that theme and you just work within that theme. Or you can go really heavy on the customization, css, HTML, or use different frameworks like the Oxygen framework that we're using now. That is incredible. There's a lot of lot of options, but a lot of people don't need all that and some might need it. First of all, I want to just say WordPress is a fantastic blogging platform. It's fantastic for search engine optimization. It's got a lot of good points going for it. It's a huge, huge community. So there's always a way to fix something in WordPress with a quick Google search. But depending on your business, your business model, what you do, what you sell, it may not be the best option for you. And I kind of was on the fence about a few years ago, but recently I've really come around and I'm really obliged now to tell my audience that WordPress is not the best solution for all cases. If you're on an e commerce store, if you sell physical items in an ecommerce store for years, I would just tell you go with WordPress and use WooCommerce, which is a plugin. Very, very simple setup. But today I wouldn't recommend that. I actually would recommend you go with Shopify. Go with a Shopify hosted website. I know that shop has different plugins and tools for WordPress, but I would just go with one of their websites. Shopify is just such a good platform and they have built such an amazing solution for e commerce businesses. If you're in E commerce. This is a no brainer in my book. Shopify is just so, so good. I know there are other players in this market like Weebly and Squarespace and they have E commerce solutions, but I just feel like Shopify ticks all the boxes and more. Their support's incredible. I would not use WordPress if you have an ecommerce store because Shopify is just gonna do it for you. Now you might be saying, what if I have a blog and I want a fully fledged blog platform that really can help me grow my content marketing? Should I host my blog on WordPress and you know, host my site or my store with Shopify? That is an option. I would recommend you check out Ghost. Ghost is a fantastic blogging platform. If you just a blogging platform to go along with your store, I would highly Recommend Ghost over WordPress actually, because Ghost is a whole lot easier to use. It's a lot more intuitive. It's beautiful. They've done a great job over the Ghost team. Shout out to John o' Nolan and his team at Ghost. Great, great tool. Moving on to another business, and I just kind of alluded to it, if you have a blogging business, like your job is to blog and you have affiliate links and you do affiliate promotions and you're a content creator and your blog is your business, you're a blogger, I would again recommend Ghost. Ghost is one of the best platforms I've seen in the last five years when it comes to blogging. And there's been a lot of platforms. WordPress is great, it's fantastic, but because it's open source, you're kind of on your own. You kind of have to figure things on your own. Obviously you can hire an expert to make sure you have everything secure. No plugins are messing around with other things and interfering with your design or your theme or other plugins. Sometimes you'll pay for WordPress managed hosting. It's a little bit more expensive, but at least they have support to help them out. But if you don't want to deal with any of those headaches and you're a serious blogger or content creator, it's hard for me to say there's something better out there than Ghost. Ghost is really, really good. Check it out over@ghost.org if you're in anything that deals with content, if you have an online magazine, if your whole business is a podcast, if you're just building a website for documentation, Ghost is a great option. Now Ghost is actually open source and you can install on your own server and run it on your own hosting. Or you can go with one of their managed solutions. And I actually recommend this. Their plans start at $9 a month. Peanuts for a website. And you can scale up from there. I haven't even talked a lot about the functionality. You can expand your site beyond blogging with Ghost, but if content is kind of your main game, go with Ghost. Now, if you run a business that sells, let's say online courses, or you're an info marketer, or you're an affiliate marketer, or even if you are looking to build a site to sell your software, you're gonna have a lot of pages, like a sales page and landing pages and squeeze pages and opt in pages and feature pages and FAQ pages. I can go on and on. So you're getting a lot of different formats and layouts and you're gonna have to change things regularly, update images, copy split, test, all kinds of stuff. So you're gonna need a lot of flexibility in this case. I do recommend WordPress along with a theme builder like Elementor. Elementor is a plugin that allows you kind of drag and drop and change pa, you know, visually without needing to know how to code. They also have like a paid version of this plugin. I think it's called Elementor Pro and it's well worth it buy. Don't think about it. It's fantastic. So the combination of WordPress and Elementor could pretty much cover all your bases if you know how to code a little bit. If you want to really fully customize things and you want a kind of semi custom Solution. Inside of WordPress there's a great builder called Oxygen Builder and it kind of takes over WordPress in a different way. I'm not going to go into details, but I use Oxygen Builder with webinar Ninja. Absolutely love it. I had the help of a great engineer and designer, Sunny Trochaniac. I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly. Based out of Canada. Fantastic, fantastic person to work with and he helped set us up and he really has helped us also maintain the site. So it's been really great. If you want to contact him, just go to Sunny. S U N N Y T R O C H A n I a k.com this option is if you're changing and updating and creating new pages all the time in your business. When I say all the time, I'm talking about maybe at least a couple times a month. This will allow you to create those pages easily and have the flexibility of editing them yourself without having to ask a developer or designer constantly to make a small change. Now if you don't make a lot of change changes on your website, like you use your website as a portfolio, like you're an artist or a craftsman, then you don't need WordPress. What you really need is something like Squarespace. Squarespace is a beautiful platform that has beautiful sites for people that are really using their sites as a brochure. It's a calling card. Go to my website, learn about me, contact me, work with me. These are great for consultants, personal websites, speakers, even authors and artists. It's not complicated. It's simple, it's affordable, and it's what I recommend. Why? Because it's going to allow you to get going quickly, get that site out there. It's not going to be easy for you to break. It has built in security and support and all the things you're going to need. And I'm all for buying something that you're going to use. Don't spend money on over bloated software or platform you don't really need. This is the whole point of today's episode.

To wrap up today's lesson, if I didn't mention your type of business on today's episode, explore all the options I showed you. Even take some free trials. Spend a week and have some fun and choose what you feel is enough for your business and is enough for maybe the next couple of years. Three years. Most business websites don't stay the same for more than three or four years. They need a refresh. They need a redesign. So you're not committing to something for life here. Okay, the point here is that choose something that's good for your business and get going. Thanks so much for listening to the 100 MBA Show. Today's episode's not over though. It's Free Ride Friday.
