Hey O welcome to The Hundred Doll RMBA show your real world business degree in 10 minutes every single day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of Webinar Ninja, an independent software company I started with my co founder back in 2014 and in today's episode you'll learn how I create presentation slides in just 15 minutes. I create a ton of presentations whether they're for department meetings. In our team All Hands, I run a lot of webinars for our community, for our potential customers, for partners. I create slides when I need to speak on stage or if I'm speaking at a virtual summit online. And I know that many people struggle with this process. They spend hours, if not days putting their slides together and today I'm going to show you a very easy way to create beautiful, impactful, valuable presentation slides in just 15 minutes. This is something I learned back in the day when I was a teacher in the classroom how to basically take my lesson plan and present it on the board to my students. So I'm going to show you step by step how you can do the same with your presentation slides so you don't sweat it and you have it done in minutes and not hours or days. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.

One of the things a lot of people say when I give a presentation, when I do a webinar, when I conduct a meeting with slides, they say, I love your presentation slides. They're super simple and easy to understand and they look great. So today I'm gonna be revealing my secret. All right, how do I do this and how do I do in under 15 minutes? So let's jump right in. Number one, don't open your slide presentation software. Okay? We'll talk about that later. You don't start there. You don't start with the design. You don't start with the slides. I literally just start out in a Google Doc. And in that doc, what I do is, is I write an outline. I write the content of what I'm trying to present, what I'm trying to communicate to my audience. It's so important not to have the slides open because I don't want to feel like I need to fit some things in the slides. I don't want the slides to dictate what I need to say or communicate. And I literally just do a brain dump. I write down all the ideas I want to convey in the order I want to convey them in an outline. This takes me about five minutes. Okay? Then I take about a half a minute. I go through every that is said there in the outline and I put in brackets next to the words or the phrases I want to say the word image. I literally say I want to convey this message, these words with an image. And these I actually want to put on the screen in titles, in words. This allows me to kind of say, hey, I don't really need to show this word or this sentence. Actually, it'll be more impactful if I show an image or a graph or something to illustrate this. This mixes up my slides even before I even open them up. I know before I even open my slides that I will have a Great presentation with great content, with multimedia, not just words. Okay, so this is really important. I'm spending third of my time putting down the information that I want to convey in a doc. Now, I've gotten really good at this, right? So I can do this in five minutes. I've done this over and over, over a thousand times, creating these slides. After I do all that, I then write on a separate page a summary of what I'm going to actually convey in this presentation. And you could see this as like the menu. What am I covering in this presentation? Now, I like to do this because it forces me to evaluate. Do I have too much here? Do I have too little? Am I conveying enough? Is this too broad? So literally an example of this would be like, in this presentation, I'm talking about this thing, this thing, and this thing, and then I'll have some Q and A. This just allows me to kind of understand holistically what this presentation is going to look like or what's it going to cover. Also it allows me to go back to my outline, my brain dump, and say, you know what? This thing really doesn't fit into this theme or what I'm covering today. I can cut this out. It allows me to trim. It allows me to cut the fat. I like to be a little bit free with my thoughts in the beginning, but then edit and trim down. I'm about seven minutes in right now in this process. I then open my preferred presentation slide software. Some people love PowerPoint, some people love Keynote. I personally like Canva, and I'll tell you one big reason why I love Canva. Number one, Canva has something called a brand kit. What's a brand kit? Well, a brand kit is basically a feature they have in their pro level that allows you to upload your brand's fonts and colors and media like logos and all that kind of stuff. Now, why is this handy? Well, what's awesome about this is that when I go to Canva and I search the topic of what I'm going to have my presentation about, let's say it's a pitch deck. I'm pitching something and all right, pitch deck, it's going to show me a whole bunch of templates that says that's all about pitch decks. I can just choose any template that I like that looks really cool. I don't have to worry about branding. I don't have to worry about colors or fonts or anything like that, because guess what? I can apply my brand kit, my fonts, my colors to any Template and it's going to look branded. It's going to look like somebody custom made this template for my brand. Takes me less than a minute to choose a template and click a couple buttons to apply my fonts, my brand fonts and colors in my brand kit. That's about eight minutes. Okay, I spend the next five minutes now just taking what's in my document and putting it into the slides. So I already know what's going to be text, I already know what's going to be image. So I literally just pop in the text. Anything that's image, I just search that word that, that I'm looking for an image for in Canva. And they have royalty free images on that, you know, and on many different topics and terms. And I just paste that image right in my slide and with the templates, it will just apply the image right in the template so it looks seamless. So this is where I spend my time, transferring all the information. This is just a worker bee task, right? I'm not even thinking, I'm just taking information, I'm formatting it. It's kind of my creative side coming out here, fitting it into the beautiful template. We're 13 minutes in. My last two minutes is basically I go through all the slides. I cut out any fat or any extra slides I don't need. I do some proofreading. I might even call somebody else, like Nicole, come and take a look at my slides. Because fresh eyes are always better to look at something and make sure everything looks right, no typos, that type of thing. And that's it. It's saved in my account. When I want to present, I can just go to my Canva account and go into presentation mode. Or I can easily export it as a PDF if I'm speaking at an event. Sometimes events are like, hey, we need it in this format. I can export it as a PowerPoint as well. And that's it. Fifteen minutes are up. I am done. And I like the time constraint because it forces me to get really concise and not fuff about with my topic, with my slides, with my presentation. If you want to learn more about how to create a great presentation slide with Canva, this is my tool of choice. Hang around, I'll show you where to go to get that information.

To wrap up Teddy's lesson. When I was a teacher before, I would plan what I would put on the board or put on my slides to present to the class, I would come up with a lesson plan. This is the outline I was talking about in the doc. And your lesson plan is really essential because for us as teachers, it was our insurance to make sure we're covering enough information in that class to be able to get to the goal at the end of the semester, which is for them to understand all the topics are in the curriculum so they can pass their exams. Right? That's just the reality of education. So this is a muscle you have to actually exercise, not conveying or not teaching too much information or too little. Most people have the first problem, which is they try to say too much, try to teach too much and it becomes overwhelming for your audience. It's better for you to go deep in comprehension with less information so they, you know, understand and retain 100% of what you have conveyed versus understanding and remembering or retaining, you know, 50% of what you said because you just put too much into it. Just too much information and they just got overwhelmed or literally they just kind of gloss over after a while because it's just too much. So just keep that in mind when you're putting together your presentation slides. Now if you want to learn how to create beautiful looking presentation slides with Canva, we got your back. One of the best rules that I've learned about presentation slides is is the T shirt rule, which means you don't want to put too much on a slide. You don't want to put too much information, you don't overwhelm people. You don't really need that much information. If I can just give you my slides and you get the gist 80% of what the presentation was about, then I'm useless as the teacher. The slides are just visual aids. There shouldn't be a word for word transcript of what you say on the the actual presentation. So the T shirt rule basically says what would you put on a T shirt? You wouldn't see more than a few words on a T shirt. You wouldn't see more than a picture or two. So if you look at your slides and they look crowded, ask yourself, would this look good on a T shirt? If not, forget it. Reduce it. Make sure it looks good on a T shirt. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. I'll see you then. Take care.
