MBA1891 Dominate Your Market by Creating a Movement
2 Feb 2026 · 12 min
Podcast episode (hosted by Omar Zenhom of the $100 MBA Show) teaching how market leaders create movements to dominate markets. The episode interleaves sponsor ad reads (Intuit QuickBooks, Dell, Fidelity, 1-800-Flowers, McDonald’s) with a solo lesson using brand case studies (Nike, HubSpot, ClickFunnels, Canva, Webinar Ninja) to show that a clear philosophy and community (movement) — simplified into a concise statement — turns customers into advocates. Omar emphasizes genuinely believing the movement, simplifying the message ("a confused mind never buys"), and using the movement as a North Star for decisions; includes calls to action (leave a review, join community).

Hey, welcome to the $100 MBA Show. Only the best business lessons delivered to you daily every single day with our daily 10 minute business lessons for the real world. I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of Webinar Ninja, an independent software company I started with my co founder back in 2014 and and in today's episode, you'll learn how to dominate your market by creating a movement. Any market leader does more than deliver a great product or service. They're an advocate of a philosophy. They create a movement with what they do. Many people don't know that running for leisure or exercise was unheard of before Nike hit the scene. Going for a jog was basically invented by them. Their movement was running is for everyone. Or as they put it, if you have a body, then you are an athlete. And ideas spread far easier than marketing hacks. Why? Because an idea, a belief system, a movement is propelled by the people that are associated by it. So your customers become your advocates. They spread the message for you. But how do you do this? Well, that's what we're going to break down today. I'm going to break down some brands, big and small. How they created their own movements and how you can take their technique and apply it to your own business to create your own movement. This is the difference between a good business and a great business. A household name, a market leader. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.

Have you ever wondered how companies build such a huge fan base? I'm talking about raving fans, people that absolutely love anything this crazy company puts out. Why do people line up outside the Apple Store to get the next iPhone? What causes people to do that? It's not just the product or the brand. It's the philosophy that underlies it. I opened today's episode with the example of Nike because Nike changed the face of personal fitness. No one wore sports shoes or sneakers outside of a track field. No one wore them casually. No one went for a jog, wanted to change that. They created a movement to tell people, hey, if you got a body, you're an athlete. So what are some other companies in today's day and age that have created a movement and used that movement to propel their business, their sales, their growth forward? One that comes to mind in the online business space and in the tech space is HubSpot. HubSpot's been around for nearly decades, but they were the proponents, the advocates of inbound marketing. The idea that, hey, outbound marketing and sales, that's the old way to do business. Allow people to learn about you and leave their email address. They come to you and then you can follow up with them via email. Inbound marketing became their banner, became everything they did. It infused their products or services or messages or website. They even named their own annual conference after it. It's called Inbound. Another tech startup that's been around for about eight years is clickfunnels. Some people absolutely love clickfunnels, and some people not so much. That tells you something. Anytime somebody is creating a movement, there's gonna be polar opposites. There's going to be some polarizing thoughts. But ClickFunnels said, hey, forget your website. What you need is a funnel, a sales funnel. They own the word funnel and they took over that word and used it as A part of their movement again, calling their customers funnel hackers, they named their conference Funnel Hacking Live. And it become more than just a software. But the theory behind the software. Canva, for example, told the world, hey, you don't need to be a graphic design graduate to design your own graphics. You can do it yourself, you can own your brand, and it's not gonna cost you an arm or leg. And there's not a huge learning curve democratizing design. And that's what Canva did to grow beyond than just another startup for us at Webinar Ninja, our webinar software. There are a ton of other webinar softwares out there. But what differentiates us and what allows our customers to really fall in love with us and continue to be part of our community is the movement that we. Our movement is educase based marketing. This teaches everybody that, hey, you don't need to be some expert sales business y person. All you need to do is teach what you know so you can grow. In fact, our motto is teaching is the new selling. Teach what you know. Build trust with your audience and that will convert into a paying customer. So what is the identity of your business? What is the philosophy behind what you do? How is it different from. From what other people are doing? For us, we don't subscribe to the overly hyped salesy marketing. We believe that the best way to market is to give value and to teach others what you know. So we stand out because of that, because people kind of like, oh, this is different. This is a breath of fresh air. So this is going to take a bit of time for you to explore what is your movement? What are you going to really, really believe in and spread as the message behind your business? Like you're some sort of missionary. I'm serious here. You gotta really believe in this idea. Otherwise it's just gonna fall on deaf ears. For me, in my company, the reason why we chose education based marketing is that me and my founder Nicole, we've been educators our life. We are big believers that teachers change the world. People that teach other people other skills change the trajectory of what world we live in. And we want to empower these people. Independent teachers, coaches, trainers, we believe the power of teaching. We believe that this is the best way to convince other people. I have your best interests in mind. I'd love for you to check out what I have for you. The next step is to simplify the message. It has to be super clear to your marketplace, to your potential audience so they understand what you're all about. That's why internally we have all these great words and we know what we're doing and this is our vision, this is our mission. But we simplify it into one sentence. Teaching is the new selling. Why is that important? Because if I want to convince somebody of something, if I want them to buy what I'm actually putting out there, I'm not even talking about money. I'm just talking like, do they actually believe or can they say, yeah, that makes sense. When they hear something, they can't be confused. They say, a confused mind never buys. So it has to be super, super simple. So boil down your philosophy, your idea, your movement into a simplified statement, just like Nike. If you have a body, you're an.

To wrap up today's lesson, I want to stress that point I made that you really need to believe in the movement you're making. Because you're going to be saying this over and over and over and you're going to be infusing in everything in your business. It's what you're going to be known for. It's really the value of your business. When somebody looks at your business and is interested maybe in acquiring it, they're going to say, I am buying this because of the movement they built. Yes, they have a great product. Yes, they have a great service, but so do the competitors. It's the movement they care about, because the movement is the audience. So make sure you truly believe in what you are professing, what you're preaching, what you are assigning as your movement. This goes hand in hand with seeing your customers, your potential customers, the people on your email list as your community, as members of your family, people that have a common belief, a common philosophy, at least when it comes to what you do. There's so much power in this. There's so much power in community. Because we're communal by nature. Human beings are traditionally parts of tribes. We want to be a part of a tribe. So start your tribe Start building your movement and be proud of your community. Thanks so much for listening to the $100 NBA show. If you love what you hear, leave us a review. Another huge advantage of starting a movement, having a philosophy that's the underlining belief system of your business is it becomes your North Star. It becomes your guiding light. If you have to make big decisions about your product, your service changes, the direction you're moving, the type of customers you're going to go after. Ask yourself, is it aligned with your movement? Is it aligned with the philosophy you have laid out for yourself? The belief system, the belief that you have said, hey, this is what I really believe in, this is what I really want to see in the world. If it's in line with that, then you do it. If not, you don't. So so nice to have that to refer to when things get tough. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. I'll see you then. Take care.
