I'm your host, your coach, your teacher Omar Zenholm. I'm also the co founder of Webinar Ninja, an independent software company I started with my co founder back in 2014 and today's episode is Q and A Wednesday. On Q and A Wednesdays, we answer a question from one of you, one of our listeners. If you had a question you want to ask, just email me over at Omar MBA Net. Today's question is from Gabby and Gabby asks how do I connect with more positive people? I'm early in my entrepreneurial career. I just started my business about four months ago, but no one around me really gets it and in fact they're all working for the weekend and kind of are a downer. I got lots of friends but they don't really energize me or make me feel good about what I'm doing, let alone inspire me. How can I connect? Meet more positive people? Would love your advice. Thanks Gabby. This is a huge, huge question because like Jim Rohn says, we're the average of the five people we spend the most time with. And if you're spending time with people that don't motivate you, that don't inspire you. You won't be motivated or inspired. Listen, entrepreneurship is hard as it is. It doesn't need any more negativity demotivation. You need all the help you can get. You need to be around people that will push you, that will motivate you, that have been there, done that, or at least are trying to get there with you. So in today's episode, I'm going to share with you some easy to implement steps, strategies, tips that you can do today to start surrounding yourself with more positive people. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.

So in today's Q and A Wednesdays question, Gabby asks, how do I surround myself with more positive people? Here is the reality, guys, I'm going to just give it to you straight. Human willpower is limited, okay? The amount of willpower you have is not infinite. You can't just be super strong, super motivated, positive all by yourself. You have a limited amount that you can generate by yourself. You're kidding yourself. You think you can actually sustainably be positive and motivated without any external help. You need to surround yourself with people where success and positivity is the norm. That's the standard, so that you can recharge yourself from time to time or have people that can support you when you're not really feeling it one day, because that's going to happen. You're going to have ups and downs in your business. So I'm going to share with you some simple things you can do, some simple steps you can take towards surrounding yourself with some amazing people. What I found is that the most happy, most positive people are people that are doing things, that are taking action with their life, that are trying to make a change. They're not just sitting around thinking, talking about it. They're actually taking matters in their own hands. These are people that understand that life is about doing and living life, okay? So as much as possible, you want to be around people that are actually doing things, taking action. This could be as simple as joining a gym or a yoga studio or taking a creative writing class at the community college around the corner. The point here is that the people that will join you in that activity that will be in the same space are doers are people that are trying to improve themselves. And you're more likely to meet somebody if you're in the same space. It's just physics, right? So this is a very passive way for you just to be in the right place to meet the right people. It's just to join something, be a part of something that encourages people to take action. Now an easy way to do this if you want to be around people that are building businesses or chasing their dreams, is to literally go to those places. And it can be as simple as just joining a local co working space or startup hub. Most bigger small cities have a co working space like WeWork or, or it could be something locally done, not like a franchise like we work like in Australia or in Sydney they have fish burners or the startup hub. So the point here is that you can literally just pay to play, meaning you can literally just pay a few hundred dollars a month to grab a desk in a co working space where you can surround yourself with doers, people that are trying to build their business by being part of spaces like that. You'll also get invited to events and dinners and even trips where you can get to know more and people. This makes it incredibly easy to meet people and make friends that are doing things because you're showing up to the same place every day, you're making coffee, you're having chit chat and this is just very, very organic. The minimal viable version of this is literally just to go to a meetup, to go to an event, to go to a dinner, to go to a pitch night, whatever this type of space will offer. On a Friday night or a Saturday, if you go to meetup.com or go to Eventbrite, you will find events in different genres, in different industries, in different interests, not just business that you might be interested in, right? That you can just join and be a part of that event. Even if you're a total introvert just being around people, you're going to bump into somebody. If you go to an event every week, you're going to talk to somebody, somebody's going to approach you and say, hey, my name is so and so. What brings you to this event tonight? The point here is that you have to make an effort to go to these events, literally put it in your calendar. Go to a social event, right? Go to a networking event like a meetup. And these meetups, these events, these pitch nights, they make it super simple because they include drinks and food and you know, it's quite inviting. Actually. Another version of this is going to a conference, right? Like a two day conference that's in your local area. And there are lots of conferences that happen throughout the year live in person. Conferences are coming back as things are starting to open up again after Covid. But there's also conferences that happen online that you meet people online, you meet people via video chat. So this is another way for you to dip your toes in the water and meet interesting people. Now, if you're somebody who's bold and ready to shake things up in your life and you really want to make a big move to be surrounded around really positive people, then you can do what I did. You can move cities. When I became a full time entrepreneur, I quit my day job and decided to go all in on becoming a business owner. I moved to New York City. Now, there's a reason why I chose New York, several reasons actually. But your New York City or your major city could be just around the corner. It doesn't have to be in New York. But my reasons why were, number one, a city like New York, no one goes to New York to relax. No one goes to New York to coast. Everybody who goes to New York City is chasing their dream. I wanted to be in a city with that kind of energy where everybody's just going for it, whether they're doing it so they can become an actor or a musician or a startup founder or a podcaster or whatever it is. Cities like this have an energy, they have opportunities. You just feel it in the air and you just feel like you gotta go for it. It's normal for you to be trying to achieve your dreams. And there are cities like this all around the world. It might be your capital city in your country. And if this seems like, wow, I don't know if I can make a big jump like this. Think about maybe doing a one month sabbatical, see how it feels, move for a month before you uproot yourself and change locations. The point here is that sometimes just physically changing your life environment will motivate you and help you meet new people and absorb the energy of that city. I'm a big believer that location and environment can really affect your progress.

To wrap up today's Q and A, Wednesday's question from Gabby. How do I surround myself with more positive people? It's literally getting yourself to a place, a physical location where you're more likely to meet them. We talked about co working spaces, we talked about moving cities. We talked about going to conferences. We talked about going to meetups. We even talked about as simply as just going to a gym or a yoga studio. A place where people are trying to improve. Now we're going to take the strategy a little bit further. In these types of situations. You're going to meet some people, right? You're going to get their contact. You might follow them on Twitter, whatever it is. Okay, let's say you meet two or three people every time you go to one of these events. Eventually you're going to start saying, you know, out of those two or three people I met today or yesterday, there's one person I really am interested in getting to know a little bit more. They seem really positive, they seem really motivated. I love what they're working on. I really jived with them when we met. You got to take things to the next level, meaning you got to make it a point to reach out to them and say, hey, let's grab a coffee. Hey, let's grab lunch. For a long time, I had a practice where every Friday I had lunch with somebody I wanted to get to know, somebody that I met at one of these events. And I just have it block booked in my calendar. So I force myself to get out of my office and go deepen a connection with somebody I'm interested in to get to know a little bit. Then after that coffee, lunch, it gives you a better understanding if you want to continue to know this person, get to know them, work with them maybe, or just simply get more, hang time with them, be their friend. But you got to take initiative. You got to take that next step so that you can build upon that relationship. You should be the person or the kind of person that does take that first step. I can't tell you how many times I did this. And then later on when I got to know this person, we became good friends. They've told me, I'm really thankful that you actually reached out to me and you had lunch with me. I really wanted to get to know you, too, but I really didn't have the guts or I just got lazy. I'm glad that you had the discipline to do so. So they'll respect and love you for it. So take that initiative, and what you're going to find is that you're going to start meeting new people, getting to know them, becoming friends with them, and spending more time with these positive, constructive, helpful people than the people that you were spending time with before. Your time starts to shift. And I don't want to say that they replace your old friends, but in essence, you'll be spending less time with the people that don't help you or don't motivate you or make you feel good about yourself. And more time with people that do that actually are aligned with where you want to go. This is part of growth. This is part of becoming something better than you are today. And sometimes it's painful. I got to tell you that over the course of the last 20 years, my friends have changed dramatically. The people that I know, the people that I connect with, the people that I trust, the people that I consider close friends. And it's not like there's betrayal here or anger. It's just that I've grown. That means I've changed. And who I connect with and want to be with changes as well. Thanks so much, Gabby, for asking today's question. Sometimes in business, you hit a certain level of revenue and you just don't know how to move the needle. Here's a little hint. What got you to that level won't get you to the next level. We'll explore what those things are that will allow you to break through. Tune in tomorrow for that lesson. Before I go, I want to leave you with this. One of the things I realized about meeting new people and trying to make new friends even as I get older is that it makes life kind of exciting. It makes things different. It makes things fresh. You have new kinds of conversations. You have new kinds of experiences. Experiences. Things seem to be less mundane. So embrace the challenge and maybe even a bit of the nerves it takes when you have to go out there and meet new people. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. I'll see you then. Take care.
