In today's lesson, you'll learn how to know you're getting better. When you're working on yourself, when you're working on your business. Every single day, day in and day out, it's hard to know if you're getting better day to day. Yesterday seems like today you don't feel any different. Day to day, it's hard for you to know if you're moving in the right direction. So in today's lesson, I'm going to give you a single strategy that has helped me tremendously. To track my progress, to track my growth, to know if I'm actually moving towards my goals or not. There's nothing more frustrating than working at something and then feeling like you're not making progress. Well, at the end of this episode, you'll know exactly how to know for sure if you're making progress or not. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.
Okay? Does this happen to anybody else? You sit down with a juicy QPC, some McNuggets and those golden fries from McDonald's. Then you take a long sip of your Sprite because you can still hear your mama saying that, don't fill up on that drink before you eat your food. But you're grown now, so you do what you want.
Share and share alike with the 20 piece McNuggets from McDonald's for just $6. Limited time only. Price and participation may vary. Cannot be combined with any other offer. I said this quote a thousand times on this podcast, but it's true. It's a quote by Peter Drucker and it says, what gets measured gets managed. If you don't track something, it's very hard for you to know. How is it going? Right? Is it going in the right direction? Am I doing well? Imagine you're playing a game of basketball and there's no scoreboard and there's no one keeping score and you don't know how much time is left. It's very hard to know where you're at. Are you winning? Are you losing? How much time do you have left to actually get to where you need to go in terms of winning the game? You need to keep score. Okay, so how do you keep score on the goals of your life? Well, actually, it's just one habit that I picked up a few years ago that has helped me so much to really understand. Am I moving in the right direction? Am I doing the right things every day to take me closer to my goals? And that habit is journaling. Okay, now I know you heard a million times. You should journal. You should journal, you should take notes. But I'm going to give you the how because I've heard this a billion times in my life. Oh, you should keep a journal. You should take notes. You should write in a diary. And I was kind of like, so what do I do? Do I just write down, you know, what I did today? And I'm just kind of left confused. So I'm going to give you exactly what to do so that you can track your progress. So this is very simple. I actually prefer physical paper and pen, like a notebook. Okay. And it's an easy way just to get started. You want to go digital later? Go digital later. So I literally get a very handy notebook, Like a hundred page notebook. Something small, something that I can kind of carry in my bag easily or just put on my nightstand. Something like a six inch notebook. One of those moleskins are perfect. Okay. Now what I do is on the very first page of that notebook, I write down my top 10 goals. Now, we talked about setting goals and all the things you want in life. And I actually start with a list of 50. And then I take from the 50, what are the top most important things I want to accomplish in my life that I want to be able to cross off the list. That's like really important to me. And I write those 10 goals on the first page of the journal. Why? Because this is the target. This is how I win. Okay? I need to understand what I'm shooting for. Okay? I need to be reminded, hey, this is the destination, right? This is where you're trying to go every day. Sometimes we can forget, we can get overwhelmed, we can get busy, we can get bogged down, we can get stressed out. All that kind of stuff. It's really important to be reminded. Now, I look at that list every single day. Every time I open up that journal, I look at that list. Now when do I look at that list? I'll explain. So what I like to do, because I'm very action oriented, I like to have a purpose. When I'm writing my journal, I don't just write down random events that happen. Oh, I went to pick up a dozen eggs and then one of them cracked. I don't do that. Okay, so maybe like to do that, but personally I don't. What I actually do is I write down how my day went. What did I do in that day? Okay, how did I spend that day? How did I spend my time? So it's a very practical kind of catalog of what I did. From going to the gym to eating breakfast, to what are the big things I worked on in my business, the important phone calls I made or deals I made, any interesting conversations I had, and I just get really honest about how the day went. I then end off by writing down a phrase or maybe even a short paragraph about how I felt about my day. And it's basically, imagine that one day was your life. How do you feel about that? Do you feel like it was a waste of time. Do you feel tired? Do you feel enthused? Do you feel satisfied? Do you feel proud? I just write down because the way you feel on a day to day basis is basically how you feel about your life, is basically how you feel about yourself. And by writing that down every day, I keep track of how I feel on a regular basis. So, for example, if I read and go back and look at the last month and, you know, half of the days of the month I wrote, I didn't feel good. I felt tired, I felt messed up, I felt frustrated, I felt angry. If I saw that, I know there's something wrong. This is too much. See, you may not understand the magnitude if you're not. Guess what? Recording it, recording the way you feel, recording what's happening in your life. Like Peter Drucker said, you're not measuring it, you're actually measuring. You're jotting it down so that you can later on look back and say, you know what? I need to do something different. Because that's too many days in a row I don't feel good. What I love about journaling is that you care for your facts. That's what happened, okay? This is the reality. It's right in your face. It's in black and white. You wrote it down. The third and last section of the journal. So again, I catalog my day, the things I did. I then write down how I feel or how I felt during that day. And then the last section is, I answer a question, and that question is, am I moving towards my day goals? All right, I have the goals on the first sheet. I look at those goals, then I look at what I did that day. And I have to ask myself honestly, did I do things? Did I spend time? Did I think about things to move closer to my goals? If not, I need to write that down today. I did not do things that moved me towards my goals. Actually, they. They actually pushed me away from my goals. You have to write that down. You have to make a record so that you could say to yourself, tomorrow. Or when you wake up the next day and say, you know what? Yesterday that happened and I got to shift, I got to change. Because today can't be the same as yesterday because I can't take two steps back. This is incredibly powerful. I can't tell you how powerful this is. You have to experience it. Because what you're doing is you're holding yourself accountable. You're telling yourself, hey, you said you wanted these things. You said that this is what success means. To you, this is what's going to make you happy. So why are you not moving towards that? Why aren't you doing tasks that will build upon that? And of course, if you do tasks that help you get closer to your goals, then write it down as well. Also, what I like to do is when I have several days in a row, like seven days in a row, doing things that get me closer to my goals, I celebrate something small. Maybe I treat myself to a pizza lunch. I recognize the fact that, hey, I'm winning, I'm looking at the scorecard right now, and I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing. By the way, this is incredibly motivating. You're pushing yourself, telling yourself, hey, look, you said you're going to do something and you're doing it. You're doing what you're supposed to. You are winning. You're seizing the day. By the way, this is how confidence is built. This is how you build self confidence is because you don't break promises to yourself. You feel proud about who you are because you're a doer, you're an action taker. You actually follow through. Hey, Fidelity. How can I remember to invest every month? With the Fidelity app, you can choose a schedule and set up recurring investments in stocks and ETFs. Huh, that sounds easier than I thought. You got this? Yeah, I do. Now, where did I put my keys? Member nyse, SIPC Guys, to wrap up today's lesson, if you want to know if you are getting better, you got to document it. You have to write down what you're doing every day. And then what happens is that you can go back and read and you can skim. You know, go back. How did this month go? What about compared to the month before? Compared to the month before? Actually, I've grown a lot. Actually, I've done a lot. I've accomplished a lot. I've moved towards my goals. Actually, I can scratch off one of my goals. I've already reached one of them. This is so empowering. This is going to give you so much fuel because it's actual proof you are winning. And it's not all in your head and it's not all in your heart. And you're like, I feel, I think that, you know, I'm winning and you're not reliant on these huge milestone events in your life like, oh, I made a million dollars, or oh, I lost ten pounds. And now I feel like I'm winning. No, the incremental changes and the incremental improvements are winning as well. It's actually what makes you get to those milestones and are the most important thing that you need to keep track of. Are you moving in that direction? That wraps up today's lesson. Before I go, I want to leave you with this. Guys, do not over complicate this. Don't try to find the perfect journal, the perfect format. Just try what I gave you, okay? With a notebook, with a spiral notebook, with a legal pad. It doesn't matter really. You just need to get started. You know, I actually started on a legal pad because it's what I had in the house and just wanted to get started. And then later on I moved and got myself, you know, a nice leather bound one. And I kind of saw it as like a nice little gift to myself. A treat for actually doing it long enough to finish my legal pad before I needed a new notebook. Hope that helps. And. And I hope to check you in Monday's episode. I'll see you then. Take care. Of.
