Eduardo what I'm going to share with you today that's going to greatly improve your chances of success with anything you go after is something that I learned from Jim Rohn. Jim Rohn is the founding father of personal growth, and what he shared in one of his speeches and in his books is a daily practice. It's a daily mindfulness that will really, really change things around for you. And that daily practice is every day stand guard at the door of your mind. What does this mean? Well, I might actually let Jim Rohn himself explain. Here's a little clip from one of his speeches in the early 80s.
Here's how you build anything. Select the right ingredients, keep out the wrong ingredients. And it starts with thought. Everything starts with thought. So you must be wise and careful what you think about, because that starts everything. You got to be wise and careful. I asked the kids what would happen if somebody dropped sugar in my coffee. They said, well, you'd be okay. I said, what if somebody dropped strychnine in my coffee? They said, well, you'd be dead. I said, correct.
Lesson one.
Life is both sugar and strychnine. You gotta be careful. I said, what if my worst enemy drops in the sugar? They said, will you be okay? I said, what if my best friend, even by accident, drops in the strychnine? They said, well, you'd be dead. I said, correct. Lesson two, watch your coffee. You got to be careful, see, it doesn't matter who hands you the bad stuff. It doesn't matter where you get the bad stuff. It'll still do its damage on your bank account, wherever you get it. Mr. Shelf gave me one of the greatest phrases when I first met him, when he said, jim, every day, stand guard at the door of your mind. How Important. Stand guard at the door of your mind and you decide what goes into your mental factory. Don't let anybody just dump anything they want to in your mental factory because you've got to live with the results.
So let's unpack what Jim Rohn just explained. Stand guard at the doors of your mind really means you have to be very vigilant about anything that you expose your mind to. This means what you see on your phone, social media, what you watch on tv, what you binge on, on Netflix, the books you read, the books you don't read, the things you listen to, the people you listen to, pretty much everything you do, you expose yourself to is, is going to affect you, is going to pour in the ingredients that are going to allow you to produce great results. It's that simple. Whatever result you're trying to achieve, whatever success you're going after, you need to pour in ingredients that will get you there. So look at your day. How much of the things that you're putting into your brain, into your mind, being exposed to, is helping you achieve your goal. This is going to take some deep thought because you have to really be honest with yourself. How much of your media consumption, of the people you surround yourself with, of the things you listen to, you read, you do all that stuff, how much of it is helping you and hurting you to achieve your goals? Let's say I want to drop 10 pounds and improve my cardiovascular health and put on some muscle. I want to get healthy. Well, it doesn't help me to get healthy if I am not surrounded with healthy people, if I'm not reading books on how to get healthy, if I'm not in an environment that is healthy, if I'm not eating healthy, if I'm not watching things that support my decision to get healthy. If you do though, it really ramps up your chances of success. Because what this does, it makes it a no brainer. It makes it normal in your head to reach that goal. It doesn't even seem hard anymore. For example, when I wanted to start this podcast, one of the things I did actually is I moved to San Diego, California. I wanted to improve my chances of success with this podcast. Now they make jokes that when you move to San Diego, they give you a mic. It's a joke about how many podcasters live in San Diego. There were so many podcasters and still till today that live in the San Diego area. It became a normal thing to start a podcast and to run a podcast. If you live in San Diego and you're in that Circle of entrepreneurship. Right. But for most people that live elsewhere, it seems like a huge feat to start a podcast, like it's this big thing. But not only that, I started to listen to a lot of podcasts to see what it's like to have a great podcast. I read books on how to launch podcasts and how to produce them. I watched videos on YouTube. I took courses on podcast production. I knew if I pour the right ingredients in my brain, as Jim says, I will eventually churn out something that resembles success. And yes, it is that simple. Okay, I know this sounds like so basic, but this is really how it works. Think about anything you learned or achieved, like graduating high school. In order for you to graduate high school, you needed to achieve a certain level of reading and writing and math and science and whatever subjects you had to take. How did you achieve that level? How did you get to that level of success? Well, you went to class every day. You listened to the teacher. You watched them explain things on the board. You read your textbooks. You did your homework. You took exams. You just expose your mind to these subjects so often that it fell into your brain and you were able to pass the exams and graduate. A few years back, I wanted to learn how to snowboard. I want to switch from skiing to snowboarding. And before I even got on the snowboard for the first time, I watched a ton of YouTube videos on how to get on a snowboard for the first time. Beginner steps, tips, tricks, how to put on my gear, how to clip on my snowboard. I read books. I even listened to podcasts about how snowboarding got started by the founder of Burton, Jake Carpenter. Then the first day I got on a snowboard, I actually took a couple of lessons. It was a group lesson. And because I exposed myself to all that information, I poured in that kind of information in my mental factory. The instructor was shocked. I've never snowboarded before. And he said, you're picking this up so quickly, so much. In fact, he dismissed me halfway through the day lesson and said, you're good to go. Get on the lift and have fun. And I knew I got to that level of success because I exposed my brain, I exposed myself. I poured the right ingredients to increase my chances of success.

So let's talk about action items. What can you do today to increase your chances of success in whatever you're trying to achieve? Well, first, choose an achievement. What do you want to achieve? Where do you want to be successful? Maybe it's getting to a profitable business, learning to play the piano. Whatever it is, choose something. Okay, once you've chosen it, ask yourself, where can I grab information to improve my chances of success? Where can I pour in good stuff into my brain every day on a consistent basis? One easy way to start is just get a book. Search your topic for success on Amazon. Find a book that looks good, that has good reviews, or a book that I recommended on this podcast in the past in a must read episode and just go ahead and buy it. Okay? Buy the Kindle version so you can get started right away and then commit to reading 20 minutes of that book in the morning, 20 minutes at night. Very simple. I like 20 minutes because I feel 15 minutes is kind of short. It doesn't really give you that momentum. And 30 minutes sometimes is a bit long, especially before bed. Might feel like you're fighting sleep. Guess what? 40 minutes of daily reading can actually get you through that book pretty quickly. But more importantly, you're putting in good ingredients to achieve your success every day. Want to take things to the next level? Well, what are you doing during lunch? Can you grab an online course or watch some YouTube videos on your topic? On your goal? When you commute or work out, what are you listening to? Maybe switch to podcast episodes that are all about your goal. Again, just search the podcast app for that topic. You're going to find episodes. We live in an age of endless information, so that is actually the easiest way to get started. Now the second thing you have to do is just as important as what you put in. And choosing good content is keeping out bad content. Keeping out bad things. I mean, the quote is stand guard at the door of your mind. So review. What are you exposing yourself to that is keeping you away from success? That's putting you in a state that is not conducive to winning. This could be social media. Maybe you need to take a social media fast and see how that goes. Maybe you have a toxic friend or two that messages you and you have to go back and forth with them. Maybe you need to take a break with some friends you meet up with for drinks because they really kind of shoot down your ideas or your dreams. Make a list of things you need to stop doing that are not helping you achieve your success. And be honest. If it's not helping you, then it's probably hurting you. There's really not many things in life that's kind of in between. You're either growing or you're dying. That's just the nature of the world. If you are vigilant about these two exercises, you will see a dramatic difference. This is my experience, and I am confident you will experience the same. Thank you so much for listening to the 100 OMBigs show. If you love what you hear, make sure you hit, subscribe or follow on your favorite podcast app so you'd never miss an episode. And thanks, Brian Clark for the introduction. Mama Suz, you are our Free Eye Friday winner. If you want to win a free ride, just leave us an Apple Podcast rating and review and you enter our weekly random draw. Listen in on Friday, just like today, to see if you won. It's that easy. Before I go, I want to leave you with this. One of the things I also learned from Jim Rohn is who you become is just an accumulation of what you do every day. Your daily habits. And if you have good daily habits, especially habits that are geared towards what you're trying to achieve, you're going to have a better result. But just like the good habits, the bad habits can gain momentum and give you some seriously bad results. And it can get frustrating. So even though these are little things we're talking about, little habits, they make a tremendous difference because of the consistency and because of the momentum that you built. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in Monday's episode. I'll see you then. Take care.
