MBA2012 Do Engagement Posts Work on Social Media? + Free Ride Friday
2 Feb 2026 · 13 min
Omar Zenhom breaks down engagement posts on social media: asking for comments to trigger algorithm amplification. The two methods are posting your link after comments peak, or DMing commenters to start sales conversations. The second works best for coaches and consultants, and VAs can run it with qualifying scripts.

We announce this week's winner a little bit later on the show. In today's lesson you will learn do engagement posts work on social media? You know what I'm talking about when you see somebody post something like this, would you like a copy of my latest cheat sheet? Comment below. You might see this type of post on Instagram, on Facebook, on Twitter. What's the deal? Why do people do these posts? What's the point of it? Does actually encouraging the engagement matter? What happens beyond that? What's the funnel? I was asking these questions myself so I decided to do some research. Ask some of the people that I know that do these posts and go behind the scenes and find out what kind of impact do these posts have on their marketing and the sales of their business. I'm going to break it down in today's lesson so you can know if these types of posts would work for your business and if it's worth giving it a shot. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business.

When I started seeing these posts where people ask this question, hey, do you want my thing that I just worked on? Comment below and let me know. I was just like, why? Why don't you just put the link or say link in bio if you're on Instagram, why don't you just give it to me? And then I learned the reason why people post these engagement posts is to get engagement. The thing about social media is the algorithms will favor posts that have more comments and likes than other posts, meaning that they'll show your post because it has engagement in people's news feeds. So basically the person that's posting this, that's giving away their free guide or whatever, is asking their followers, their people on social to engage with this post so it can go a little bit viral. And by doing so, by everybody saying, yes, I would like a copy, this sounds great, I think this would work for me. You're generating engagement and telling the algorithm of Facebook or Instagram or Twitter or whatever, hey, this post is popular. Show it to people just like the people that are commenting. So you might be wondering, well what about the actual piece of content? What about this guide? They said, hey, I have this guide. If you want it, comment below. How do they deliver this guide? What's going on? Well, I've seen it done in two different ways. The first way is that they actually put the link to download that guide or whatever to access that piece of content after the post has generated some engagement, like when it kind of died down, then they put the link. But also seen this implemented in a different way. And this is probably the most effective way based on what I have found in my research. And basically what they do is they direct Message the people that have commented, and they might even say that in the top of the post or maybe as the first comment, let me know and I'll DM you the details. And they basically, if they're on Facebook, they just go to messenger and they message them. Or if they're on Twitter, they DM them and they give them the piece of content. They also start a conversation with them. Now, the reason why this method is very popular is because this allows you to have a conversation with a potential customer. It allows you to learn a little bit more about what they're struggling with, what ways maybe you can help them out, maybe even schedule a call to see if they're interested in your products or services. This turns your social media posts into a sales conversation. And this is incredibly effective for coaches and consultants who really can't sell their product just off sending them to a landing page. Maybe their coaching package is 10, 20, $30,000 a year. Why? Glove treatment. Meaning get on a phone call, learn a little bit more about this person, do a little free coaching, and then convert them into a paid client. And the direct messaging allows you to kind of start that process. Now, the advantage to this implementation of this concept or this strategy is that the post never gets the link, meaning people will continue to say, yes, I want this thing every time they see this post. Or maybe they go back to your feed and then you go through the process where you direct message this person. Now, the problem is, is that it's not easy to scale. It's not automated. You're gonna have to DM people individually. But if your business is a consulting or coaching business, that's just the nature of your business and you're used to it. But even if it isn't that type of business, you sell products, you sell software, you sell courses, whatever it is, this is a pretty straightforward exercise. You can give a virtual assistant, you know, maybe a virtual salesperson. And it's pretty easy, especially if you have a framework or a script or maybe some guidelines for them to use when they have these conversations in direct message or Messenger. And what I've learned from my friends that do this, this is well worth the investment. Like paying somebody to answer these or send over the materials and schedule some calls is incredibly effective and a great way to get new clients. In fact, I know one of the best business coaches, Taki Moore, who's a good friend and basically is the coach of all coaches. He gets a lot of lead gen and clients via Facebook, via this method I just talked about. And he's got a team of people on messenger, direct messaging, people giving them the content, scheduling calls, seeing if they're a good fit for their program, qualifying leads basically and turning them from cold leads to warm leads. Now, the original question of today's episode was do these engagement posts work well? Anytime you see something happen over and over and over on a platform or in the marketplace or in the advertising world or whatever, there's a good chance that it does work because people wouldn't continue to do it. For example, you might notice an ad that you've been seeing on social media for maybe over a year. The first thing I think about is not like, wow, I'm annoyed by this ad. I actually think what about this ad is making it successful? Because they wouldn't keep running this ad if it wasn't converting for them. Kind of reverse engineer for my own business. And the same applies with these engagement posts. They do work for many, many coaches and consultants. This is why they continue to do it. But my advice to you and I kind of think this is kind of the gist of the whole episode, right? This is if you're going to take anything from this episode, I think this is probably it. When there's a trend and people are doing this and it's working for them and everybody's doing it, it's really important for you to do it a little differently, to differentiate yourself a little so you can stand out, so you don't just kind of get drowned out by all the noise. So my opinion is one way you can differentiate is to just be honest about what you're doing. So people are not annoyed or curious about why don't you just put the link? How about say, hey, I just created the ultimate guide to creating your very own birdhouse. Want a copy? Let me know in the chat. So there's engagement and Facebook can make this post go viral. That's the only fee I ask for this free guide. You'll be surprised. People will first of all take action because they kind of like the honesty and really think it's original. 2 They'll probably do it even more. So meaning engage more comment like wanting to root for you and want to see this post go viral because now they kind of get you. They kind of like what you just did there. And of course you stand out. It's different.

These engagement posts really, really do work. I highly recommend you give it a try in your business, especially if you have to have one on one conversations to qualify leads and to begin the sales cycle, people spend an incredible amount of time on social and messaging through Social media. Platforms are becoming more and more popular because people answer, people read their DMs and it's pretty close to just like actually text messaging them. So it's a bit of an intimate conversation. You can build rapport and trust pretty quickly. Thanks so much for listening to the $100 VA show, but today's episode's not over. It's Free Ride Friday. Let's see who won this week's Free Ride. If you're going to be on platforms like social media, like Facebook, like Instagram, like Twitter, you gotta understand how it all works. You gotta understand what makes it tick so you can have it work to your advantage. Okay? You want to be a content creator. You want to get the most out of this product, out of this platform and not let it suck all your time, right? Not let it distract you. The point here is, is that if you know how things work and you know what makes it tick. You can start to manipulate what the actual algorithm or what the platform needs. Now, you're not going to be able to hack it indefinitely, but you'll understand what the platform is looking for so you can actually feed into that to benefit your brand and business. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in Monday's episode. I'll see you then. Take care.
