2 Feb 2026 · 13 min
Podcast episode from Omar Zenhom's MBA2033 Must Read series reviewing Tim Ferriss's Tribe of Mentors. The host summarizes the book's structure (100 mini-interviews with experts answering 11 common questions) and highlights recurring takeaways: learning from failure, learning to say no (protecting time), vetting the source of advice, and the benefits of sharing ideas. Omar recommends the physical book for casual, non-linear reading and positions it as a practical cheat-sheet for habits and strategies across fields. The transcript also contains multiple sponsor ad reads (Intuit QuickBooks, Dell Tech Day, Metro by T‑Mobile, McDonald’s) and closing CTA to subscribe and rate the show.

I'm also the co founder of Webinar Ninja, an independent software company I started with my co founder back in 2014 and today's episode is a must read episode. On our Must Read episodes, I share with you a book that has influenced me as an entrepreneur. I share with you its takeaways, its insights and why you should read it too. Today's must read is Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferriss. Tim Ferriss is one of the most popular authors out there, especially when it comes to the business genre. His first book, the Four Hour Workweek is a New York Times bestseller like all his books, but it became sort of like the Digital Nomads Bible. From there he evolved and started writing books on health with the Four Hour Body and the Four Hour Chef. And of course Tim launched a podcast that's quite popular and this book has some relationship to that podcast and we'll get into that in a moment. Tribe of Mentors is a collection of 100 mini interviews from his podcast where Tim sits down with some of the most successful people on the planet. He tries to collect as Many great ideas from them about money, about health, about learning, about relationships and about failure. We're going to get into this book and boy is it a big book. Share with you some of the things that really moved me and get into why it's worth reading, why it made it as a must read episode. So let's get into it. Let's get down to business. Gas, snacks, tolls. This trip is draining my wallet.

Tim Ferriss has a very successful podcast of over 200 interviews and over 300 million downloads. And from that podcast he extracted some of the wisdom from those discussions with world shakers, people that have done incredible things, from astronauts to athletes to actors to musicians to basically anybody who's at the top of their field. And from those interviews he actually wrote his fourth book. Not this book, but that book was called Tools of Titans. Now you can read this book or you can go back and listen to all those episodes on his podcast. I would recommend reading the book because listening to all those podcast episodes would take maybe a year given the fact that his interviews are like two to three hours long sometimes. And that book was a big bestseller. It hit the New York Times bestsellers list as well. So he's four now at this point. Right. He's killing it. But he still had more questions from these experts and he kind of want to formalize it. So what he did with this book, Tribe of Mentors, he went back to those experts and he asked each of them the same 11 questions. And these questions focus on the books that these people, these experts, these amazing achievers have read, the habits they have, the type of investments they make and their overall attitude towards life. Now I really like this book because I was kind of surprised about the variety of answers that were presented to him from the same 11 questions. And there were some reoccurring themes. I'm going to share with you those reoccurring themes. One of the things that a lot of these experts shared with Tim was the fact that they learned a ton from failure, that they grew the most from failure, that they actually got a lot of opportunities in their life through failure, through. I thought that was very interesting how so many of the people that he spoke to that have achieved so much say, if it wasn't for my failures, I wouldn't be where I am today. Another reoccurring theme that I heard over and over from all these experts was this concept of learning to say no, understanding that your time is your most precious asset and that if you don't learn to say no, you will never get ahead. You're going to really feel resentful too, because you're going to feel burdened by pleasing others, always saying yes to others, and never putting yourself first or your priorities first. And another great takeaway, the third one that I thought I heard from a few experts that I really loved. And it's the concept of checking with who is giving you advice before you take that advice. Some of us, we really love asking for advice. We are not really sure about how we feel about something. We want to know something for fact. So we gravitate to the idea of like, let me ask somebody for advice advice. The problem is that advice is not fact. Advice is just their perspective, somebody else's opinion of what you should do. And that opinion of what you should do is tainted by their own perspective on life, their experiences, and it's really what they would do. And that's good advice for them, not for you. So be very careful about asking for advice, but also when you ask, find out a little bit more about who you're asking that advice from. Are they worthy of giving advice? Do they have the experience? Do they have the know how to actually give a solid opinion and some insights on what you should do. In fact, it's written in the book. Before taking any advice, check all the potential reasons not to then decide. One of the topics that they talk about is the idea of sharing your ideas. Too many people are so coveted, they guard their ideas. Ideas for dear life. They don't want to share because they think people are going to steal their ideas. But according to Tribe of Mentors and the people that were interviewed nine out of ten times, when you share your ideas with others, that idea gets better and you're left off with a better idea, a better version of what you had in mind. Now, why do I think you should read Tribe of Mentors? Because I think that there is a lot of value in hearing what successful people have to say. Tony Robbins says Success leaves clues. I love this quot quote because a lot of us struggle. We wonder, can we really do this? This is really hard. Am I cut out for it? And hearing other people's stories helps you understand that, hey, they're human beings. I'm a human being. I can do it too. And you understand the value of what to work on, what to focus on, what to think about, what to do, what habits should I have? Those things are really important if you want to become successful. So I have a lot of time for anybody who has proven that they can achieve results, because I want to achieve results. And regardless of what field they're in, if they're an athlete, if they're a politician, whatever it is, they did something. They changed something. They improved their mindset, they improved their habits, they changed the circle of people that are around them. They did something to achieve that result. I want to know what it is. And basically it's a cheat code. It's a cheat sheet to fast tracking to success. The other thing I love about this book is that it's sort of like a choose your own adventure kind of book. You don't need to read it in a linear fashion from start to end. You can just jump into the book, open a random chapter, read something and gain some new knowledge. Improve. You can go back to sections that you enjoy, you can share certain quotes with friends or even on Twitter or social media to brighten somebody's day or to improve their day. So it's one of those books that's really good to kind of just have with you around the house. You know, maybe read a chapter while you're having your morning coffee or before bed. In my opinion, if you had to choose between all of Tim Ferriss books, this is the book Tribe of Mentors. I actually think Tribe of Mentors is better than his previous book Tools for Tie Ins, which is a bigger book. But I feel like Tribe of Mentors kind of gets to the point is a more concise, distilled, a powerful punch kind of book. All in all, Tim Ferriss has done an excellent job with his book. It's a great book not only to read yourself, but to gift regardless if somebody is interested in starting a business, running a business, as an entrepreneur or not. I got more on today's topic, but before that, let me give love to Today's sponsor.

To wrap up today's lesson, I highly recommend you pick up Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferriss. It makes a great gift. Of course I actually recommend you buy this book in physical form like hardcover because it makes sense to just kind of have around the house, like I said, flip through the pages, that kind of thing. It doesn't really lend itself to Kindle that well audible. I haven't tried it, but I would imagine it's kind of the same with Kindle. Not easy to kind of flip through and just open to a random page. Pick it up. You won't regret it. Tribe of Mentors by Tim Ferriss that wraps up today's must read episode. If you love today's episode. You pay you know, 10, 20, $30 for a book and you priceless amount of value really from this, from from that kind of purchase. This book is no exception. This book really gives you a lot of great advice, a lot of great insight. Just some good vibes to you. Just feel like you're surrounding yourself with good information. I always say you rarely regret a purchase when it comes to books. Just buy it. Thanks so much for listening and I'll check you in tomorrow's episode. I'll see you then. Take care. Gas, snacks, tolls.
