Musicians do incredible things. They shape our lives in so many ways. Our memories, our our moments with the music they have created. But they're also entrepreneurs. They're business people. They gotta make it happen. No one's gonna make it happen for them. That's why these five things that they do are so impactful, even for us as entrepreneurs. And let's start with number one. The first thing that a musician understands is they are not gonna have any success if they don't have a great product. The legends that we know think of your favorite song and who performs it. They go into their lab and they spend the time and the energy and the creativity to create something special. One of my favorite things to do is to go deep in the web and look at some of the demo tracks that some of my favorite musicians have created. These are tracks that never actually got on an album. They're kind of half baked and you listen to them and they're amazing, but they're not super polished. They're not as polished as the ones that make their albums. And it goes to show you, it takes different iterations. It takes a lot of work. Many great musicians will write and perform 30 to 40 to 50 songs for an album and maybe only 10 make it. That album that they produce is their best work. And they understand that they have to put out their best work. Now they know not every song on the album is going to appeal to everybody, but enough will resonate with enough people to make it a success. Now we know there's more to a successful musician's career than just the actual music they create. We're going to talk about that in a moment. But if the music's not good, if the work they create is not noteworthy, it's not gonna get talked about, it's not gonna get played, it's not gonna Go viral, it's not gonna get shared. So as business owners, we have to remember that at the end of the day, our product has to be as good as possible to increase our chances of success. So, number one, create a great product. The second thing that musicians can teach us is they understand that most of their work is not creating the music. In fact, I was watching an interview of Elton John and he was talking about he spends as much time marketing and selling his music as he does actually creating it. And one might even say most musicians spend more time marketing and selling. Every time a musician goes on tour, that's a marketing and sales activity. Every time they do an interview, that's a marketing activity. Anytime they play live at an award show or sell their music to be played in a movie or commercial, musicians understand that they will not succeed if they just create music. If you build it, they will come. Does not exist in the real world. You have to tell the world about it. You have to spread the word. You have to play your music, you have to sell it, market it, make sure the world knows about it. In fact, the best musicians that you know, the legends out there, they don't actually produce an album every five minutes. They produce an album every few years. Because they spend the next few years marketing and selling it, knowing it's going to fund the next album. They need to do that, and they understand the power of that. And therefore, that's why you see them everywhere. When their next album is out, they gotta be everywhere. Despite what they may or may not want to do, they understand they have to sell their music. The third thing that musicians can teach us is new music sells old music. One of the best strategies for any musician is to come out with another album. A good example of this is the indie band Fun F U N Full Stop. They're that band out of Brooklyn that has that smash hit Some Nights and We Are Young. So Some Nights, that album that has those songs that's really popular, is not their first album. But in fact, when they put out that new album, it made their old album that a lot of people never heard of before do well and get played. And when they play live, people are requesting the songs from the old album. So a new album can often get people to discover what else you created in the past. So the same thing goes with our business. When we create new products or features or offerings, people are like, oh, this is cool. What else do they offer? And they go back into your website and they take a look at other things that you have, new things can allow to get you exposure to old things. In fact, I'm a fan of fun and I actually prefer their older album, their first album, Aim at Ignite, and I only discovered it because I heard the song Some Nights and looked them up. The fourth thing that musicians can teach us is collaboration. Musicians know the power of of getting in front of new audiences. That's why they collaborate with other musicians and they're featured. That's why they say so and so on a track. That's why you'll often see maybe two genres get mixed together because the person that's featured is getting exposure to a new audience. A good example of this is Daft Punk featuring Pharrell. And Pharrell is a pop star, right? Mostly does pop and rap, hip hop. But Daft Punk is a French electronic music duo giving Pharrell exposure to a whole new audience. So musicians get this. They say, hey, I'm going to get featured on this track. I'm not really even interested in getting paid a whole lot because it gives me a chance to get new audience members. As business owners, we need to do this. We need to collaborate, get in front of other audiences that may never heard of us. For example, I've collaborated with creatives and artists that may want to get their art and their projects out there via webinars. They're not my typical audience, meaning business owners, entrepreneurs, startup founders. They're not in our world, they're not in that world. So in order for me to reach them, I got to go to them. So I collaborate with groups, with organizations, with other business founders that serve them, running a webinar for them, sponsoring their newsletters, making sure that they know, hey, we exist here and we can help you out.

But I.
Let'S recap real quick before we do number five. Number one, create a great product. Number two, market just as much if not more as you produce or create. Number three, use new products or new music for musicians to sell old products. Number four, collaborate with others, get in front of new audiences. And number five, this is my favorite one. I actually learned this one from an independent musician and creator and entrepreneur, Derek Eric Sivers. So what is it? What is number five? Well, it's do things differently. Our favorite musicians, our rock stars in our head that we know of, that we follow, that we love. They're weird, they're out there. They might wear makeup on their face like Kiss or wear some pretty crazy costumes or have some abstract music videos or, or, or there's so many options or so many things that musicians might do differently. And the reason why they do this is because they understand the importance of standing out. If you do things the same way everybody else does, you're going to just blend in. You're just not going to be paid attention to. Being ignored is the worst. You don't want to be ignored, you want to stand out. You want people to remember you. And the problem is that entrepreneurs often fall into the trap of just doing what everybody else does. They think it's professional. They think that's like kind of best practices. Let's just do exactly what the kind of the industry is doing. But musicians know if I just do everything that the industry is doing, no one's going to notice me. This is why, Prince, you should dress like a pirate, right? It's flamboyant, it's huge, it's eye catching. You may love it, you might hate it, but the point is you can't ignore it. Now you don't have to dress like a pirate like Prince. But the point here is that think about how you can implement your business, your content, your brand a bit differently. A good example of this is Van Neistat. You might have heard of Casey Neistat, the vlogger on YouTube. But Van Neistat is his brother and if you watch him on YouTube, his videos are like nothing else. They're not like Anything any other YouTuber. Most YouTubers, their videos are fast cuts, quick music, a really fast paced type of experience. Van is the opposite. It's slow, it's narrated. It's like watching a little documentary. Every single time you watch a YouTube video, you feel like he handcrafted every video. And that's why he stands out is because it's not like anything on YouTube. And we should do the same thing with our business, with our brand, with our products, with our services, with our marketing. Do things differently. Thanks so much for listening to the $100 NBA show. If you love what you hear, if you enjoyed today's episode, make sure you hit subscribe so you don't miss an episode.
