I started with my co founder back in 2014 and today's episode is Q and A Wednesday. On Q and A Wednesdays we answer a question from one of you, one of our listeners. If you've got a question you want to ask, go ahead and email me over@omar100mba.net Today's question is from Jeremy and Jeremy asks, hey, more recently I've noticed I'm spending a little bit too much time on social media. I try to convince myself it's for marketing reasons and getting my name and brand out there. But some days I'm spending hours scrolling and commenting and tweeting and messaging and posting and I ask myself is it really worth it? I guess my question is how do I spend less time on social media? Solid question Jeremy. Listen, we all go through this and it's really great to see that you have the self awareness to understand that, hey, maybe I need to try something different. Longtime listeners of the show know that I actually took a social media hiatus for about 18 months in 2017. I've had this kind of love hate relationship with the social media platforms, but what I'd like to share with you today is a social media diet that you can actually implement. I'm going to share some practices and strategies. That's a bit of a happy medium where I don't feel like my time is being wasted, but at the same time I am posting and spreading my message on social. I actually recommend doing this before just quitting cold turkey because you might find that you're getting just as many benefits without the Downsides. I'm going to share with you the tools I use, how I like to post on social media without getting distracted, as well as how not to mindlessly just get on social media when you have a free moment and a bit more. You might find this one quite interesting. Let's get into it. Let's get down to business. Before I begin, I want us to agree on something. Is it fair to say that the social media companies, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, it doesn't matter. Their job is to keep us on the platform. That's their job. If they're doing their job successfully, they'll keep us on as long as possible. Because the more we're there, the more ads we'll see, the more money they make. So now that we agree on that, doesn't it make sense that they're gonna do everything possible to keep us on as long as possible? They're gonna hire the best psychologists, scientists, experts to know what we like, what we don't like, and feed the algorithm to keep us there as long as possible. We are no match. It is arrogant to think that we can fight against a billion dollar company with endless resources, with experts and cash on hand to keep us on the platform. It's not a fair fight. So what Jeremy is going through is normal. This is what's supposed to happen because this is what the platform is built for. And yes, there are benefits by posting on social, letting people know about what you're doing, promoting your products and services, helping people out, giving advice, giving content, all that kind of stuff. But how can you do the positives without the negatives of wasting immense amount of time of your day that you could be using, growing your business? Well, I'm going to show you how, I'm going to give you a few strategies, few practices that I have implemented that has saved my life when it comes to how much time I spend on social media and I kind of call it my social media diet because I basically cut out all the fat, all the stuff that really wastes the time. Now, the biggest problem or biggest part of social media that wastes your time is the news feed. Doesn't matter if it's Instagram or Twitter or Facebook. That feed that you're scrolling where you're seeing all the updates from the people that you follow or the ads or the videos or whatever might be that's really optimized to keep you on the app as long as possible. So if you cut out the feed, it really makes a big difference. This is why I highly Recommend everybody right now to install a app. It's a Chrome extension, a browser extension called News Feed Eradicator. When you install and activate this app on all your social media, it'll ask you, do you want to activate this on Twitter and Facebook, Instagram, you can just check all the boxes. When you sign into, let's say Facebook, you don't see anything in the feed. It just replaces the feed with an inspirational quote for the day. And it is really boring. It's like there's nothing for you to see. So what you do is you just check your notifications, you check your messages and then you leave because there's nothing really to see. This alone is like mastering the social media game, at least by 50% because you are not going to be sucked in. And going into Facebook, you might even habitually go into Facebook or Instagram and open up that tab again and realize, oh, there's nothing to see because the News feed is cut off and you just stop getting on social that often. It's actually quite magical. Now, I know you're thinking, what about the phone? You might be thinking, what about posting all that stuff? We're going to get to that. But this is a great thing to have on your computer, on your laptop. Newsfeed Eradicator, it's a really good Chrome extension. Now let's go to the phone. Most of us spend most of our time on social media on the phone. And this is why I highly recommend you delete the app apps from your phone. I do not have any social media apps on my phone. The only apps I have are messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger, because that's how I communicate with a lot of my friends and family. And that's not social media, in my opinion. It's more like messaging or communication. So if I need to do something on social media, check something on social media, I do it on my laptop, I do it on my computer. This allows me to just have a time block on my calendar. When I do that, it's not going to take me that long because I'm not going to be wasting time on the feedback. So this is the step a lot of people have a hard time with. But trust me, when you do it, you're going to feel so much better. And the fact that you didn't delete your accounts, you know, on social media and you still have access to them on your computer, minus the News feed, of course, you feel like it's okay. I can always go in and see if everything's alright. You don't have this fear, like, what if somebody messages me or somebody, you know, replies and I don't have a chance to comment on that reply. When it's time for you to work on social media during your, you know, your day on the calendar, you will reply. And this is such a huge relief because you're never on your phone using social media. You have a lot less anxiety. You're not wasting or filling in time on your phone. Instead you get more done during the day. You can actually require less breaks and you're not looking for relief on your phone all the time via social media. So I highly recommend you delete all your social media apps on your phone. Do it right now while you feel inspired. And trust me, you can go back to your computer whenever you want. You don't need it on your phone. And guess what? When you're out and about, you can enjoy the moment. You don't need to be on social media now. I know you might be thinking, hey, Omar, I love taking pictures. I love documenting things. I like sharing them on social media for fun with my friends and family. That's great. And what I love about not having the apps on my phone is that if my pictures and videos in the moment is significant enough, if it's something that I feel like it's special enough to share, then, then I will make the effort to airdrop or transfer my photos to my computer and post it when I'm on my computer. This is kind of a filter to make sure I'm not just posting everything I do and only just sharing the most important things or the things that are worth sharing. Yes, it's a little bit inconvenient. You'd rather just, you know, post the photo from your phone right on your phone from the social media app. But it's a small price to pay to save a lot of time and really save a lot of sanity. Now, my third strategy is one of my favorite strategies out of the three because it allows me to focus on being a content creator. Now, one of the best things about social media is that you get to share your content, your information, your posts, your promotions, things like that. You're part of the media and this is so much easier. Now that you have a news feeder eradicator doing its magic, you could just go ahead and do your posts on social media on your computer. If you want to take things to the next level and really do it properly and just focus on the content that you're sharing, use a social media scheduling tool. You can use something Like Buffer or Meet Edgar or socialmonials and just spend an hour a week and put all this information in your scheduler and you can kind of have all your posts for the whole week for all the platforms all set to go, done deal. And you don't even have to do this. You can hire somebody to do this. You can get your executive assistant to do it or a social media marketing manager. There's all these services out there that do this for you and it just ensures that your content's getting out there. You're posting, you're active without you even being on social media. I don't even do most of the posting. Honestly, I don't. I have one of my team members do it. Sometimes I will post personally on Twitter. That's probably the only one I'm really active on. Or Facebook. And when I do it, I usually do it through a scheduling app or I just go on my computer with the newsfeed shut off, popping in my post and just leaving the app immediately. And what I love about the fact that I'm posting on my computer is that I'm not compelled to check the reaction to my post every five minutes on my phone. Who liked it, who didn't like it, who said something? I could check that tomorrow. It teaches me discipline and structure for my workday and gives me boundaries so I'm not a slave to the machine.

So Jeremy's question was, how do I spend less time on social media? Well, these three strategies alone are going to help tremendously. Using the newsfeed eradicator on your computer, removing the social media apps on your phone, and posting using or scheduling tool. But here's one more strategy and this is a kind of step beyond this and it's an optional strategy, but I've seen it used very well and that is not to engage or be social on social media. Meaning a lot of creators are now just using social media as a billboard, right? As a way to just push out content. They're not so concerned about commenting or liking blocking everybody's post after they've posted. They just put the content out there and they never comment or reply to anybody. That's just their mo. You may not think that's nice or cool or something, that's your style. But guess what? A lot of the really popular people on social media, they don't comment. They don't reply because there's too many people. People that take on the strategy don't really ask for engagement. They don't actually ask questions. They actually just give information, give statements, give videos and just give value. So it's an option. I know that the algorithm will favor more interaction, but if you don't have to worry about going back into social media frequently to see the comments and reply to the comments, this is one strategy that might benefit you and might have more benefits than it has negatives. That wraps up today's Q and A Wednesday. Jeremy, thank you so much for asking today's question.
