Kindergarten Self-Contained Autism Classroom Tour

Grace, a kindergarten autism teacher in her fourth year, tours her 2026-2027 classroom. She walks through the entry station, color-coded curriculum materials, small-group instruction tables, and the PEAK program's one-on-one setup. The room uses numbered cards to match independent work to each student's skill level.

Hey y'all, my name is Grace and I am a kindergarten self-contained autism teacher. This is my 4th year of teaching and now that we are officially back to school, we're in the groove. This is our 3rd full week of school. I wanted to share with you all what my classroom is looking like this year. I've changed a lot of things up and I'm implementing some new ways of teaching. I'm really excited about a lot of the new things that we are doing this year in my classroom, so I wanted to share that with you all. So I'm going to go ahead and take you around my classroom and share with you everything that we are doing this year. My first little station right when you walk in. So students turn in their work throughout the day here, put their daily folders in here, lunch boxes go down here. And then this is where I store a lot of our curriculum access. So here is language arts. We're in unit 1 right now, so it's empty. Then as you move down, store all of the prepped materials in here. Here's math, and then up top is where I keep their morning work pouches. And then we have daily schedules that are all color-coded for each student as well. Moving along to the back wall, I have a bunch of cabinetry, which is really nice since the room is smaller, and I'll show you guys what the inside of some of these cabinets look like. They just store a bunch of different supplies. This was a summer project one year that I'm so proud of. I love how it turned out. And then back here we have a little table that the students can sit and play at. These are all the chairs that we just put in the back so that it's easier for the custodians to clean each night. And then over here I store some of our math activities from Curriculum Access, and I have them sorted by levels, which is nice. Just have some everyday supplies that we are always grabbing so that you don't have to get up from the table. I can just carry this, put them on each small group table, and it's ready to go. Over here, same thing. Have another caddy up here. And then this language arts file sorter that also holds a bunch of different Curriculum Access activities for my students. Down here is where I keep all of their folders, which has all their worksheets in it. So here is language arts, the anchor charts up front, and then math is in the back on this side. Then I have their phonics Here is my desk area. So I ended up getting rid of my teacher desk that was provided by the school and just got this small standing desk to give us some more room this year. And then I have the horseshoe table over here now that we can use for various activities. Here is the front of my room. I already have up, um, the Autism Helpers Leveled Daily Work. We're We use this for morning work, so I have it displayed and ready to go for when the students get here. And then here is all of the interactive pieces we use for morning meeting, which is also all from The Autism Helper. Covering the names, but these baskets all hold the student supplies for PEAK, which is another program that we implement in our classroom. And then back here are 3 different one-on-one center tables. So I store a lot of our PEAK materials in here that we're not currently using, and then students are able to work one-on-one with the teacher. So I have a visual here that students can use to put their schedule piece on, and then also a response scoring sheet. That's just a nice reminder for PEAK. Over here is our next one-on-one table. Here is a little art caddy, and then This holds all of our art projects for the week. So I just preload it for the week, which is nice because then I don't have to worry about it day to day. And then again, those same visuals on this table, the teacher work and the response scoring sheet. Over here is our independent center, which since it's the beginning of the year and I teach kindergarten, is not quite independent yet, but they are growing in their independent skills. So I know with Within the first few months, we will have this center going and it will be independent, and I'll be able to then add in an additional center to our rotations. But on this wall, they have their cards that have the 1, 2, 3, their color, and their name. So they'll find their card and then they'll come over, find their color, complete 1, complete 2, and then 3 is a toy choice. And as you can see, not everybody has a 2. And so that's just one way that I was able to differentiate for some of my students. Some of them are only doing 1, and then they get a toy choice just to meet them where they're at. And then I have my all done bucket right there, and then those same visuals right here, the teacher work and the response scoring sheet. So here is another little overview of my 3 one-on-one tables. And we're kind of back to the middle of the room. We do have a closet in our classroom, which is really nice. to store extra stuff in as well. And then that is the door to our bathroom, which is also super convenient to have access to from the classroom. This is new this year. I have 2 circle tables, which is really nice to implement small groups, something new that we're doing this year, um, which we have been loving and it's been going really well. I'm so happy that I decided to make that switch. It's small, but it works perfect for us and Something funny is that it's constantly changing, which I think it's just something you come to learn about teaching—that every year looks a little bit different. So your classroom's gonna look a little bit different. All right, that is my completed classroom tour for the school year 2026-2027. Leave a comment down below if you have any questions. I hope you guys enjoyed watching today's video, and I'll see you in my next one. Bye, guys.
