How to Set Deadlines That Get Results (Create Attainable Milestones) #deadlines #productivity

Start with a rough estimate like four hours per page, then write one section and track actual time. Compare it to your guess, adjust the rest of your deadline based on what you learned, and tell people the real schedule instead of guessing wrong.

Is the milestone attainable in the time allotted? So the thing is with that, have you— and we got, we've done a little bit of this— have you estimated the time? So, so let's just do that real quick. How much time do you think each section will take to write? Now, now again, You have no experience with writing this paper about the estimating model that you just came up with. And is it really valid or not or anything? In some ways, in other ways, you're a professional. You've been at this a long time. What you just did, a lot of people can't do. It's like, oh, that includes research time, writing it, reviewing it. I have to re— you know, so you did that mechanism. A lot of times when you say that to people, if you said this to a college student, they go like, I don't know, 12-page paper, I can get that done in like 3 hours. And it's like, uh, yeah, and the quality would show that, right? In the old days when I started documentation and training, um, we used to use an estimator for page length, for pages, to be, uh, 4 hours per page. So, uh, if you had 12 pages, that'd be, uh, 48 hours. It's about half the time. Um, writing procedures isn't writing a point of view paper, but it might be similar. So some— you'll come somewhere in there. The thing to do with the estimating model on this for, for attainability is to write— is to drive this through as you would normally do. It's like, here's my outline. Get one section done and estimate how much time in and track that time, and then go back and go like, that actually didn't take me 20 hours, took me 17 or 12 or 10 or whatever it is, and then go back and redo your estimate. And then you can move that deadline back if you want, or spread it out more like peanut butter and do less of the work week to week. But now that deadline is, is more reasonable with the estimate of time. Cool. Yeah, this is so good. Okay. So, um, and so, by the way, I was hoping you were going to say by January 1st, so I could read this thing by then, but, you know, you made up your own deadline. Okay.
