How to Start Your Own Movement: The Purpose of Change #StartAMovement #Leadership #Entrepreneurship

Paul and Nate brainstorm what makes a movement different from a job or business: broad impact, winning hearts and minds, and soul. The host survived his corporate job at Accenture by treating it as a movement with higher purpose rather than just work.

We started a series about movement and starting a movement. And in some ways, whether you're in corporate and, uh, you're trying to start a movement, could be starting a new practice or starting a new, uh, big offering, which, uh, I know could be possible. But also as an entrepreneur, what's the movement that you're, you're starting? So we're gonna talk about that today, but I'm gonna ask, um, Think about this for 30 seconds. What's the difference between a movement and a project, or a movement and a job, and a movement and, like, just say a business? How is a movement different than those things? Take 20 seconds, think about it, and then we'll talk about it. Okay, you got it?
Mm-hmm.
Okay, start with you, Paul.
I wrote down 2 things: broad scale and wins hearts and minds. I don't do a job always to win hearts and minds.
Yes.
But if I'm gonna do a movement, there's probably pretty much no way I can do it without that.
Yeah. Like it. It's great. Nate?
Yeah, I, I probably pretty similar to Paul's, but I'd say is there's movement has a soul. It has sort of pull to it, some higher purpose.
That's interesting you put that in, both of you, this. So, um, that might be how I survived at Accenture for so long, is I was never doing a job. I was always doing movement. Because, uh, all the things— I'd never thought of this this way before, but I had soul. I had higher purpose. I was winning hearts and minds that I, I love exactly what you guys put into this. And, and I think that's why it was there, you know, as a, as a movement. Yeah. I was doing change management work.
No, no, no. I was on a crusade.
That was, that's different, right? That's different than, you know, Nate, I need to get the change management portion on, on your project. It's like you didn't get that from me. It's like, Nate, if you don't do this, everything's going to— you got to, you got to get this stuff done. The client's got it, you know. So you just felt a different passion for it if it's a move.
Yeah.
Oh, I like this. Okay, so, so great. So, so think about, um, what is your movement? What's the thing? So, so the, the, the dictionary definition of a movement And I like the second one better, so you don't have to write this one down, but the def— the dictionary definition is a loosely organized effort by a large group of people to achieve a particular goal. Okay. It's like, okay, to me it's like, sounds blah to me. It's blah. Okay. The second definition that I found is to define and shape a new way of living and relating. Mm-hmm. That feels like soul, higher purpose, broad scale, and winning hearts and minds. So defining a shape and a new way of, of, of living and relating. So that's a movement. So what is your movement?
