Mom Gets a Big Thank You on My Birthday - Wisdom4Humanity with Patrick Mosher

Patrick Mosher reads from his late mother's journal about the day he was born, then shares how he turned his birthday into a private thank-you to her. Every year in his mid-twenties, he sends her a card instead of receiving gifts, honoring her sacrifice and the questions he still carries about her.

This is my birthday week. I don't remember the day I was born. My mom survived 9 months of me growing inside her. She nurtured me and provided sustenance, and I gave her morning sickness and all sorts of bodily discomforts. I'm sure she eagerly anticipated my arrival. I'm guessing she didn't think much about Band-Aids and skinned knees, and she probably didn't think about who I would grow into. She probably just wanted her body back. And then that day came. Now, my mom studied library science, so she kept records of everything. And here's what she wrote in her journal on my birthday. Arose at 7 AM, birth imminent. Regular routine until 11 AM. To hospital at 12, very relaxed. Doctor gave okay at 2:30 PM. Broke water and delivered at 2:47 PM. Terrible birth pains. Stayed in bed for 24 hours. Felt good, not tired. 7 pounds, 3 ounces, 20 inches long. Came home Monday with wagon for children. Slow recovery at first. Lifted head immediately. Well, I suppose that red Radio Flyer wagon was a peace offering from my older brothers and sister for my intrusion on their routine. And I love that final note, "Lifted head immediately." There's probably a bunch of neurological reasons for that, but I'll go with my interpretation. I needed to get the best view of what's going on, curious about life at the start. Literally a head start. Well, I don't remember that day of my birth, but she certainly did. In my mid-20s, I started a new birthday tradition. I sent my mom a thank you card. My birthday became a one-on-one personalized Mother's Day. My mom passed away a couple decades ago. Too young and before I could ask her so many questions about my birth and that first year. Questions like, what is one story from my first year of life? What unique quality did you notice early that stayed true into my adult life? And why aren't there any baby pictures of me? I was the youngest of four. Well, I miss you, Mom. Especially on this very special day when people celebrate me. It's lovely to receive so many well wishes on my birthday. I accept them and place them into my heart, and then I bundle them all up and send my mom one big thank you. Hey, Mom, thank you for my life, and on this day, I celebrate you.
