A consultant explains "playing the dumb card": admitting you don't know something to expose gaps in a client's thinking. It only works if you're genuinely confident in your expertise. Without that foundation, saying "I don't know" triggers self-doubt and kills your credibility.

As I'm telling that to people as a strategy, as a consultant walking into a new environment or, you know, a new client or whatever, and you hear stuff and it's like it's not making sense to you. You see a certain thing that should be done, but nobody's talking about that. That's kind of a great context for saying, "Let me just play a dumb card." As I started talking about that more with folks, I realized you have to have incredible incredible confidence and competence to play a dumb card. Because if you don't have that, what it is like, man, I don't know what's going on, I feel kind of dumb, imposter syndrome, I have all these other things kicking in, so I won't say I don't understand, I don't know. So saying I don't know has to have a lot of confidence behind it.
