The Formula to Save Flailing Projects – Effort, Direction, Momentum #projectmanagement #leadership

Projects fail for three reasons: underestimating how much work they need, spending effort on the wrong things, and losing momentum. A coaching business spending 90% of time on creation instead of marketing, or planning to write a book in ten days, shows what goes wrong. Fix effort estimation, align work with what actually drives results, and keep going.

So, um, if I look at, at flailing projects, I want you to think about flailing projects that you had, and we've all had them. Hopefully not the ones that I was directing with you guys, but let's just say, um, let's hope that's not true. But flailing projects, and you can use this formula, right, and start looking at it. It's like, what made it flail? Well, there's lots of effort. And lots of distance, but in the wrong direction. There was a lot of effort, but the effort was so big that there wasn't enough. So misestimated the effort. And I think about that as like, um, I'm gonna write a book. Yeah, you know what, I'm gonna, I'm gonna take, uh, 10 days off. I'm just going to go write a book. And it's like, that's not how that happens. So, you know, it takes a lot more than that. So it's a misestimated effort a lot of times. And then also a part of this is there's no sustained effort. That's the momentum part. Do you have effort over time? And that's the hard part of the hobby piece of this thing. And it's scary to jump out and do this full time because then, you know, it's— and a lot of people miss— misunderstand what that takes too. People want to spend— I've seen this so much with people who want to hang a shingle as a coach, and they would spend all their time putting together what the coaching offer looks like. And whether this percentage is true or not, but I like to think of it this way. Putting together a coaching business is 10% offer and delivery and 90% marketing. And people don't want to do the marketing. So then they sit there and do, you know, all the creation of the thing for 95% of their time, and they're not getting any clients. So that's a big problem with this. So, so the effort's in the wrong place. Is this making sense to folks? I like this as an analysis of, of why some of the things that we have in our life aren't moving because the momentum's not there, because the effort's in the wrong direction, or the velocity's not there. It's not sustained.
