A leader at Best Buy Canada renamed his Project Management Office to focus on leadership instead of admin work. By compressing administrative tasks from full-time to 1.5 hours weekly, he freed his schedule for strategy. Time tracking reveals waste that leaders can eliminate.

And time is your most precious resource. So start tracking the time. You said it takes about 3 or 4 hours. Probably more like 6 or 7 when you start, you know, totaling it up. It's like, oh, wow, there's an opportunity here to, you know, to put that together. Oh, so I kind of think about time tracking and condensing time. A mini story with this too is When they asked me to, to be the program manager at Best Buy for Best Buy Canada, say, hey, would you be the program manager for that? I was like, two things. One is, I don't want to call it a PMO. I want to call it an IMO, integration management office. Secondly, as the PMO lead, I want all the project teams reporting to me. Like, oh. You don't want to do the PMO admin thing? It's like, absolutely not. What I do want to do is run the program. They're like, okay. So, so, they said yes to that, which is great. And then what I, even back then, what I thought of that is like, I'm going to take the admin part of the PMO like a foil ball, like a piece of tin foil, and I'm going to squeeze that tin foil I'm gonna keep squeezing that tin foil as if it's like time. And if it takes a day, a week to do the PMO work, how can I make that 7 hours? How can I make it 6 hours? How can I, you know, make— just keep squeezing this ball down until it becomes this steely— it becomes this little, like, hard steel ball. And it takes about an hour and a half a week. And I, I, I challenge myself with that, with the, the admin stuff, with the setup stuff. And it worked. We did, we did a great job of really putting that down. So then instead of spending 8, you know, 5 days a week on PMO work, I was spending about 4 hours a week and spending the rest of the time leading the teams, which was so much more valuable anyway. And yes, we did need to track expenses and time and, you know, all that kind of stuff, but it was not as important as the other stuff. So, So tracking time is really good to start looking at how do you create that, that, you know, metal ball.
