Your personality works like code, some of it biased without you knowing. Call out these biases in conversations, speak up about them, and when someone points yours out, say thank you. Every piece of feedback is a chance to learn.

Imagine that our personalities are made up of 70,000 lines of code. Nature, nurture, right? We've natured stuff in, we've nurtured stuff in. But I have these 700,000 lines of code. And just for a minute, imagine that you have 700 lines of unconsciously biased code. And so when you enter a conversation, be curious about finding and discovering those lines of code. So be bold about it. Speak about it. Find those biased lines of code. Put it out there. And then be ready that the response might be on a continuum. One end of the continuum would be like, oh, Patrick, that was— you need to be a little bit more careful about how you say that, blah, blah, blah, and all that kind of stuff. It's like, oh, you can do better. And I'm like, OK. The other end of the continuum is like, that pissed me off. And you get this anger and vitriol back at you too. You've got to be ready for either one of those. But accept those and go like, thank you. Gratitude. I just found a line of biased code.
