Patrick Mosher was 19 when sent to advise 50-year-old engineers in Central Falls, Rhode Island. They'd dismissed a solution he suggested. He pushed back over two weeks, they tried it, and it worked. His point: a consultant's main job is bringing fresh eyes to problems a team stopped seeing.

That was my first project. I was 19 years old and I was told, fly to Central Falls, Rhode Island. We went over this for 2 weeks about what they need to do differently. Tell them what to do. I was 19 telling 50-year-old engineers, but, but 19, I was saying, we need to do this. And they're like, done that, tried that, that's not going to solve the problem. It's like, just humor me, let's make that work. And lo and behold, the thing that we worked on as a group of engineers, but I was the front person for this thing, it worked. And it helped them solve the problem. The point of that was what I think of good consulting is, is that you go in with a different set of glasses than everybody else has, and you see the problems differently than other people see them.
