7 Reasons Why You Don't Want To Be Podcasting - The Podcast Report With Paul Colligan Episode #51
23 Jun 2015 · 3 min
A live-recorded, tongue-in-cheek 10-minute presentation (published on The Podcast Report, Episode 51) in which Paul Colligan humorously lists "7 reasons why you don't want to be podcasting" while simultaneously explaining podcasting basics and benefits. The recording was delivered at Joe Polish’s Genius Network event; early transcript content covers the event setup, a Joe Polish introduction, Paul’s definition of podcasting (audio/video online, on-demand and subscription delivery), and satirical reasons #1 and #2 (control/24x7 reach and unexpectedly large audiences), with illustrative stats and examples.

Yes, the rumors are true. 7 reasons why you don't want to be podcasting. It's the podcast report, episode 51@thepodcastreport.com 51.
It's the podcast report with Paul Colligan. And here's Paul.
Okay, I need to set this one up. I'm a member of Joe Polish's Genius Network program. Amazing group geniusnetwork.com if you want to find out more. One of the things that happens at the Genius Network events, outside of the masterminding and the outside guests and the business makings and all the wonderful things.
That happen, including really good food, we.
Do these things called 10 minute talks. And 10 minute talks are Joe's invention. And they are essentially, if you had 10 minutes to give to the world something phenomenal, what would you do? And they have been amazing. They have been wonderful. And I've been working on my signature 10 minute talk for a while now based on the success that the group has brought through this very, very cool medium. And what I have for you today is a recording of a 10 minute talk that I did recently that did really, really well with the group. Now inside the recording is an inside joke here or there, which is okay, you'll enjoy it anyway.
But what's fun here, and I'll tell.
You right now, it's tongue in cheek. The topic is the seven reasons why you don't want to get into podcasting. And yeah, I had some fun with it, so I want to share it with you.
First thing you're going to hear is.
Joe with the introduction. Then you're going to hear the audience. The recording quality wasn't necessarily as wonderful.
As you would hope it would be.
But the content is great.
I'm thrilled to share it with you.
Let's do this.
Okay.
Our next presenter is Paul Culligan. He's a podcasting consultant and expert. He's written multiple internationally number one best selling books on the topic. His current show, the podcast report, is considered a must listen by many of the top podcasters today. Paul's presented internationally about this topic. He's been in the podcasting game probably longer than anyone that I know since day one. My Genius Network interview with Paul about podcasting in his first book on the topic, didn't mention the iPhone and podcasting because nobody ever heard of the iPhone when we first released those. He helped me launch my first podcast in 2005. Paul lives, eats, sleeps and breathes podcasting. But there has been a change after Alex's presentation. That crazy man back there on momentum yesterday. And Alex, after some time with Joel, Paul has changed his tune altogether. Today, Paul has for you an uncharacteristic alarmist presentation called 7 reasons why you don't want to be podcasting.
Give it up for Paul Culligan. How many have believed the hype and think that podcasting might be a valuable tool for you and or your business? Go ahead, raise your hand. Stop the madness. It is time to face reality and realize that maybe podcasting isn't what we thought it was. Today's presentation is 7 reasons why you don't want a podcast. Take this home to your tech guy or gal. He or she might enjoy it. So I learned from Joel. Not everybody in this room knows what podcasting is. The funny thing is more of you will have raised your hand to say that you think podcasting would be good. That would raise your hand to say that you actually know what podcasting is. That's kind of the way we are as entrepreneurs. It's just what happens. So we start with podcasting. Podcasting is simply audio or video online. You can do a video podcast. You bet you can. How does that work? Well, you have to look at it. It's audio or video online. It's made available for easy on demand consumption. That's how a lot of people consume podcasts. Ever been to a website where you click play? That's one element of podcasts is easy online on demand consumption. But the other option, and this one's really, really powerful, they say, is subscription based delivery. What happens is if you subscribe to a podcast, and by the way, this has happened billions of times at itunes. Part of why you don't want to get into it is that every time someone releases a new episode, send it to me. What about spam filters? There are no spam filters in podcasting. You know, what about that whole Facebook thing where there's only 10%? There's none of this in podcasting. You subscribe, the show comes to you, period. Now. Oh, I gotta put a question here. Joel said to put a question here. Okay. Who spends more time in front of their phone than their computer? Raise your hand. Okay. But half the room spends more time in front of their phone than a computer. Phone is the number one place now where podcast consumption happens. We're spending more and more time in front of our phones than anywhere else. And the thing is, many of us drive to work, or in Joe's case, drive to the public library. You know, we have that phone with us. That phone is running. Sometimes that phone is Playing music. Sometimes that phone is playing podcasting. But a lot of us are spending more time with the phone than the computer. This is very, very key. So disclaimer. I got to make the lawyer happy. Is this okay, Denise? Okay. Disclaimer. This is what they call in the industry a tongue in cheek presentation. I know we have a couple not from this country. And so what I'm attempting to do is I'm attempting to prove a point through the use of satire. Okay? Joel wanted to make sure that I let you know that. So it's very important when you come to something like 25k, you do a 10 minute talk. You talk to Joel, you do what Joel says. Now, the number one reason why you don't want to podcast. Podcasting is a 24 by 7, robotic, independent media platform to get your audience to literally listen to your every word. Who wants that, huh? Anybody know what that is? That's not a podcast. That's a flag. For what country? Turkmenistan Party. Now, this is the website for Turkmenistan online. The Russians still own this. It's the only way to get on the Internet. In Turkmenistan. In Turkmenistan, Facebook illegal. Twitter, illegal. YouTube illegal. Pandora illegal. Yet on a regular basis, Joe's 10X Talk podcast, Dan's 10X Talk podcast is being downloaded in Turkmenistan. Ah, you guys don't want that. So number two, this one's fun. 70 million people are downloading podcasts. 1.5 billion people are downloading apps that can contain podcast content. Eh, that's too much audience for you to handle. Let's face it, you don't want these numbers. You like a small niche group, a focused 10 or 20 who hang on your every word. You don't want this. Nobody does. This is downloads for Ms. Virgin's podcast. I grabbed this yesterday, just nine days into June. 40,0001-390001-32000. All time, 1.7 million downloads. Don't do that to yourself, okay? All time, 1.76 million. Now, here's what's interesting. JJ releases an episode about 10,000 downloads. JJ releases an episode about ten thousand downloads, et cetera, et cetera. JJ, when you release an episode, how much marketing do you do?
Zero.
See, you don't want that. All right, number three, it is cruel to have your stuff on itunes. It is cruel to have your stuff on Spotify. It is cruel to have your stuff on iheartradio. It is cruel to have your stuff on Tunein. And it's especially to have your stuff on Joe's Tesla when your audience just has a Crappy looking web page. Just not fair. This is iHeartRadio app. Been doing podcasts for almost 10 years now. And my mom to this day, she will tell you this is the same mom who will text me that her phone isn't working. Just think about that. Paul, I'd love to listen to your stuff, but I don't have an Apple device. One day I looked at her Kindle. She had downloaded the iHeartRadio app. I'm on iHeartRadio, Mom. You can listen to me now. Made me so proud. You can do the same, by the way. Number four, this one's good. Deep in your heart. Grab your heart, you know, because you know, we're all doing social media. You know, the content you create doesn't deserve to live more than 24 hours. Okay, you want to make yourself a post and you want it to go away quickly so that you can create more. All right, episode four of I Love Marketing. The one where it's your turn to try it. I Love Marketing with Joe Polish and Dean Jackson. Episode four, not a keyword rich episode, shall we say? Okay, this thing came out in 2011 on February 6th. And yesterday I grabbed the downloads for this month. 192 downloads of episode four that came out in 2011. This means one download every waking hour of a four year old podcast. You don't want content with that kind of longevity, do you? Nah, you can see the point here. You don't want to be podcasting. So number five, you see an audience that buys $600 phones every year. Come on, they might not have any money left to spend for you. This is a fancy chart. When you do a presentation, you're supposed to do fancy charts. This is a fancy chart from a company called Edison. Edison does all of the excerpt research on all the American elections. These guys know that you have to get the numbers exactly right. Here's my favorite one. Okay? People who've made more than $100,000, 52% of them have listened to a podcast, 26 in the last week. 60%, last day. The fact of the matter is, the more likely, the more money they have, the more likely they are to be listening to podcasts right now. The 1% who wants them as their demographic. All right, number six, being a best selling author. Anybody want to be a best selling author? You know, deep in your heart that you shouldn't do it. You got to give a couple of years to a cabin on some island. You know, if you don't do that, something else like that's for the kids multicast marketing book I wrote with Mike Koenix, fellow 25K member number one in advertising in multiple countries. The entirety of the book is the transcripts of our multi marketing podcast. You're saying, Paul, that you did a podcast and the transcripts became your number one top selling book? You didn't have to go to an island somewhere for multiple months to write the thing? No, you don't have to. You guys are better than that. All right, number seven, if God wanted you podcasting and the old time fans of Joe here, you gotta follow with me. He would not have made it. So what? And fun. Okay, fact of the matter is we as entrepreneurs, we need less of this. We need more of this. It should not be this easy getting up in the morning with a kick in your step, a smile on your face. That should be drug induced, only not in the stuff that you create. Keep these two in your mind for what you should be doing in your content creation, and I think you will be at a much better place. So this gave you seven reasons. Okay, note to self, insert inspirational quote here. Oprah, maybe. Maybe. What about Tony? Maybe Joe Sullivan? Oh, Sullivan. No, Vonnegut. All right. Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are it might have been. Thank you for not podcasting. See what happens when you make your slides at the desk at the Embassy Suites? What I meant was that thank you for not podcasting. Okay, thank you very much. Eight seconds left.
