So I told Heidi, my wife, that, yeah, there's this new thing called the web, and the web is going to require that I spend $9 more a month on our Internet account. And I wanted to see if we had that money in the budget. She asked, what's different between the web and what we have right now? When it was a legitimate question, I couldn't even really explain it, but I knew that it was going to change everything. And it did. And I'm glad I had the extra money to spend on the web. So very glad that I had the extra money to spend on the web. Podcast technology is close to 15 years old in some areas. The actual technology of podcasting goes back further, 15, 20. And what's funny is we tend to, many podcasters tend to find great solace in that technology being so old. In some cases, it's a really good thing. Technology of RSS is what backs up podcasting. What makes podcasting possible without rss? No podcasting, despite what you may have heard. But what's interesting is there are some other things in podcasting that have changed since we started. I have this slide thing that I show a lot of times where I show a picture of Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake at the super bowl and I show a picture of Google going public at the Nasdaq. And I asked them, what does this have to do with podcasting? The fact of the matter is what this has to do with podcasting is that both of these things happened after podcasting. It's been around for a while. So podcasting technology has changed, technology has changed. Yet somehow some podcasters don't seem to want to embrace that. This is the third in an eight part series about the mindset scorecard that we use at the Podcast Partnership. And what it is, is it just a way to tell if you and I have the same mindse one? It's a great way to share what my mindset is on podcasting. But internally, it's a way for us to work with clients to figure out, hey, are we thinking the same thing? Do we want the same thing? And first we talked about the whole idea of podcast Gold, how that works. Last week we talked about the concept of Podcast Seasons, a really powerful tool. But even more powerful than Podcast Seasons is just the need to really, really embrace the technology. So the way the scorecard works, and if you want to get a copy of the scorecard, you can head out to headsuptuesday.com that's the email newsletter. When you sign up for that, you get A copy of the SCOREC card, you know, right away. Once you email, you know how it works. If you want to unsubscribe, feel free, go ahead and do that. Don't care. I want to get you the scorecard. But it's a pretty cool newsletter and eight things we take very, very seriously. And then kind of A1 to 3, section A4 to 6, section A7 to 9 to 10 to 12, where we talk about how closely tied we are to this. This mindset. So in the 1 to 3, really, really low is the mindset of, I don't understand how technology can help my show. Isn't my show technology. Those are the ones who kind of podcast. For podcasting sake, I'll just do whatever I'm supposed to do, grab whatever microphone I'm supposed to grab, put it wherever I'm supposed to put it. I don't understand why technology could help make this better. It is technology. Yeah, but there's a lot more. There's some pretty amazing things we can do about this. This actual episode is being recorded as a Facebook live, live broadcast. And I just went live. I've got another thing I have to do in about 15 minutes. But I wanted to get this out the door. And what's funny is, you know, you might be hearing a pop every once in a while. That's. That's Mario commenting. Hi, Mario. But what's great is the tech that's going to pull this, Clean up the audio, take out the background, level it, put it up on podcasts that's all automated. That's all the stuff that makes it possible for me to do the podcast. It's technology that makes the technology possible. So by itself, it's not the whole story. In the four to six category, I live in a world where profit is made from doing what technology wants me to do. That's this concept that, hey, I'm going to read the latest books, I'm going to look at the latest articles, I'm going to go to the latest events. And whatever is happening in podcasting, if there's a cool new mic to grab, I'll grab it. If there's a piece of software or an interface that makes me sound better or something like that, I'll do that. I like technology. I'll follow out whatever it wants. For me, that's always been dangerous. I've told the story before of my mom who had the iHeartRadio app on her Kindle Fire because the radio told her to. We wanna be careful about technology for technology's. Sake. Even if it looks cool now, seven to nine in the level. This is where we start to think more in terms of, well, we start to think alike. The way we phrase that is just simply. There are probably some ways for me to leverage technology in the production and distribution of my show. There's this idea that, yeah, tech's gonna make my life better. I know there's stuff out there. It's probably there. It probably exists. I should one day look into it. That type, you know, these types were the busy ones, were the. A lot of things on the checklists. I'm recording this on a Friday, and the fact of the matter is, got a lot of things to do before I can shut down for the day. So, yeah, there's tech, but one day I'll make use of the tech. You know, I don't know if that means my podcast will be remixed or sound better or better writing or that type of thing, but the fact of the matter is it's there. And to make it better, it just doesn't necessarily roll into what I'm doing right now. But where I go, where our clients go, where podcasting needs to go, is just that simple concept, and this is the 10 to 12 score, is that technology is here to serve me. Smart use of technology makes me money and saves me money at the same time. See me knowing that I can go to Facebook Live and do this, giving my Facebook audience some content, knowing that we can grab that immediately, make that a podcast, get that thing published before my next phone call, that makes me some money. And it's the combo of all these things together that makes it really viable and makes it really doable. The tech is here to serve me as things pop up in front of me. I've got a little camera that I'm playing with. It's a new idea, it's a new concept. I think it's going to make my Facebook lives better. I think it's going to make some of my recording better. I've got to figure out how it works for me. Not necessarily doing it the way, you know, it wants me to do it for itself. I don't know if that necessarily makes sense, but it's just a level, it's a focus, it's an approach of what is in this for me. How can I leverage what Apple is doing right now? How can I leverage what Spotify is doing right now? What can I leverage what Pandora is doing? And, you know, Amazon, rumors of Amazon coming out with something soon in the podcasting space. How does that work for me? How does that work for my podcast? How can I use this stuff if my podcasting is a major source of who I am and what I'm doing? How does social media serve the podcast? How does my email newsletter serve the podcast? How does my device serve the podcast? Once I understand how technology makes my communication with you better, we're in an amazing place. Now, here's what's funny. You know, as I'm looking at this on Facebook Live, Mike Lemoine, who I haven't chatted with in years. I love Mike. I've learned a lot from Mike. Consider him an inspiration, if not a teacher. He popped up and interacted on Facebook while I recorded this. So here's what's fun. Facebook a got me to do it. It's live. Knowing that Mike's in the audience, knowing that Mario's in the audience, knowing that others are in the audience, I'm giving it a lot more than if I were just talking to a microphone. Knowing that Mike's still around doing his thing, I might follow up with him. The leverage of Mike popping into my live broadcast to find out what's going on gives me credence and gives me focus and attention that I might not necessarily have gotten otherwise. And when all this is done, I might reach out to Mike and find out what's going on in his life. Technology served me now. Sure, Mike could have left a comment on my Facebook page independently of this or sent me an email or called me, hey, Mike, call me. But the fact of the matter is this all works together to serve me. If there's a microphone out there that serves me more, it's for this microphone that I'm using right now. I can tell you what it is. What's fun is it is a USB microphone, which means it goes right in my computer. We're doing this live on Facebook through this USB interface, but it also does xlr and it goes right into my procaster mixer. See? One microphone, two duties. This was a concept a couple of years ago you would laugh at right now because that's there. It makes my life easier. I just got off the phone with the client. This camper I'm looking at here, it's the Facebook portal. No, no, big surprise here. This Facebook portal might dramatically change how he does podcasts. And that was part of the phone call today, was, get ready. We'll make the decision the next couple of weeks. Is this going to be part of your season two? Yes or no. But it's going to make a show better not. Facebook's got a new device. You got to buy it. It's cool. Facebook might make it possible for your show to be better. Technology is to serve me smart use of the technology makes me money and saves me money at the same time. That's how I look to tech. And podcast is tech, 15 year old tech in some ways. But boy, I'm using the new tech as well and it's doing really, really well for me. That's the mindset on technology. So when we have clients who come to us and say, I'm going to podcast, because it seems like what people are doing today doesn't excite us. When people come and say, yeah, you combine podcasting with web, with social, with portability, with, you know, at the time of this recording, the realities of COVID suddenly I've got a really exciting platform that I don't think I had before. Yeah, that's where this stuff starts to get exciting. So that's podcast tech, part of the mindset Scorecard here at the podcast partnership. Again, if you want your own copy of the Mindset Scorecard, head out to headsuptuesday.com set up the newsletter next week or next session. I don't even know when this next one will be. Chances are good it'll probably be live. Chances are good it'll be either in front of that camera or that camera. But regardless, I'm going to leverage everything I've got because podcasting is good. Next week we will chat next session. Next time we will chat about the strategic coach concept of who versus how. Chat with you next time. Chat soon. Bye.
